Definitely Victorinox. My Spirit X has not faild a single time at anything, in over 5 years. Still feels like new. Had a LM Wave and a Bond. Both had tolerances like those of toys and the pliers didn't hold up on the Bond. The general feel of the Leatherman in flimsier. No doubt the Leatherman gets the job done and not willing to bash the brand based on my experience of only 2 examples, but in my opinion the Victorinox is the better multi-tool. 😅

@andrewdarowski1975

I have to say, I love the shit steel in a victorinox. Yeah, it'll blunt easily, but it'll sharpen right up on the bottom of a coffee cup. That means that you can sharpen it in seconds in any office, without looking like a total mental case. I love 14c28n and other mid range steels, but I won't use it on a plate in the office (or let anyone else do so) because then I have a blunt knife for the day. I have no issues blunting a victorinox, because I know I can have it sharp again in moments with something I have at hand.

I'm also a multitool (Spirit XC, with the serrated blade instead of the PE blade) and knife guy. It is why I don't care about the blade-steel on my tool either. So, I wound not spend that kind of money on the ARC for the blade.

Free technology is a really important upgrade. I broke my right hand a couple weeks ago and had to learn to do everything with my non dominant hand. Without the Arc, it would be really difficult even for small EDC tasks. I am not talking about fixing light bulbs or cutting cupboards. Just things like opening a biscuit can or opening a ziplock bag. Every time, I need more power or have to do something delicate, Arc makes it a lot easier. Being able to open every tool one handed is really useful and sweet when you can’t use your both hands.

I got the Arc early thanks to the REI reddit leak in october. the wire cutter situation is unfortunate but it’s on a replaceable part that is being revised by LM, so it shouldn’t even be an issue in the future. the bits falling out is also unfortunate, but you can take them out before hammering and put them in your pocket. not ideal, but keep in mind that what you get in exchange is the ability to swap out a ton of different bits which I think is awesome. and lastly, from a daily use point of view, the smooth one-handed operation on this tool is where it really shines! and more generally speaking, I think this tool is an EDC king. it’s not as beefy or robust as other MTs but for 230 you get an extremely user-friendly tool with a great blade, interchangeable bits, great fidget factor, and all in a compact size. for EDC it’s hard to beat.

When I was a young whipper snapper like you guys (God I sound old.....), Leatherman tools did come sharp out of the box. Not 'razor' sharp, for sure, but a decent usable edge. Newer models have definitely seem to have taken a step back in terms of sharpness. Newer models seem to be have a much coarser grind. As for Leatherman tools in general, the highlight of the ARC is obviously the blade steel, which is obviously a nice upgrade. No arguments there. The 'flippy' magnetised handles? Nice, but far from essential. With that said, in terms of being an actual multi-tool, rather than a survival/bushcraft stand in, I'd rather take the TTi - better overall tool/feature set. Guess that depends on your exact needs though.

Leatherman added replaceable cutters (as a “feature”) so they would not warranty the cutters? Do they purposely make them weaker so they are the failure point? Everybody says “lucky I can replace them” after damaged but if you just had the old non replaceable style cutters you would have never had the issue in the first place. I have the same wave for 10+ years and have never had an issue with the standard / non replaceable wire cutters

Honestly the only downsite on the plier multitools is the weight and with leatherman (idk if they fixed it) but those flat bits are very fragile i mean they get used up pretty quickly. The wire cutting makes me want to stay with my Leatherman Surge. I wish you guys would do this same testing with the Daicamping DL30. It's a surge clone except the screwdriver is much better. The wood saw t-shank is basically an aftermarket blade. Which is nominal. I mean it's fine. You don't really get a t-shank metal file the way you do with the surge. But on the other hand you have endless aftermarket replaceability. It would be interesting to see someone make a video out of real world testing on it

I never regarded any Leatherman (owning few of them, including Charge TTi) as bushcraft tool. For me it's more of urban EDC type of multitool. May be its just me, I do not know. My favorite outdoor multitool would be Vix Huntsman (for one day trips). For heavier I prefer an discontinued Wenger model - Wenger RangerGrip 95.827 Rescue, it was produced (OK, adapted) by the specs of Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service, only 300 pcs produced, 150 of them distributed to Mountain Rescue Service members, 150 were put out for sale for general public. I have a leatherman wave plus bought 3 to 5 months ago, same thing with the wire cutters happened cutting 1 strand bailing wire. The 154cm steel wire cutters rolled then broke. It was the "hard wire cutters" on the bottom same place as dbk. I believe they have too high of a Rockwell hardness and break man others have the same issue. They are 10 dollars is the us for a replacement set no biggie. As for the knife I also believe the Rockwell hardness is too soft so mikkies belt take off too much too fast or wasn't fine enough grit. My 420 hc wave plus requires hand sharpening. It's amazing multi tool butnut just that. A tool. They are not nessicsrly meant to go a long time without proper maintenance. Just my experiences.

As a person who used to carry a SAK I can suggest Leatherman T4. It doesn’t have pliers, but benefit comparing to SAK is that all tools can be opened one-handed and do lock. Benefits of average SAK comparing to T4 is less boxy handle and a bit better scissors (a touch more precise at tips). I found T4 more more pleasant to use than my old Super Tinker, but to which their own.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum, except I don't like knives on it. I'd rather just a bunch of tools and nice set of pliers and not even bother with a knife blade on it as I don't like the offset and skinnyness that it needs to be viable. Much rather just pair a good tool focused multi-tool with a good knife!

Very cool I’m my opinion but I already have the charge plus in titanium with an s30v blade so it’s hard to justify another leatherman purchase especially until they fix the obvious quality problems

I don't know... I am on the "wave" team when it comes to leathermans, but i have to confess i have messed with an Arc for just 15 minutes, while i've had a Wave on my pocket for over 10 years. I've never really used it on the woods though. Respect to the Ernie Ball's regular slinky .10! You may not know about multitools, but at least you know about strings ;) Just kidding great video as always.

Hahahahaha i’m always struggling between 0.10 and 0.11! I’m thinking of switching to 0.10 heavy bottoms what do you think?

Stevie Ray Vaughn used 11's but they take a toll on your fingers. He would switch over to 10's when his fingers needed a rest. We didn't hear your band on this video? @@DutchBushcraftKnives

@@DutchBushcraftKnivesif the heavy bottoms are the set I'm thinking of they're A++ (if they work with the rest of your setup). But for me getting string size right is about as easy as developing the perfect steel. By which I mean I am fully expecting you guys to do it in a way I can afford. So get on that.

Back when the Leatherman tools were relatively new, Tim would go to various trade shows, and would demonstrate the wire cutters by cutting a nail. The tool would be placed on the floor, the nail placed in the jaws, and then Tim would tread on the handles! At the time the tools were expected to handle this. Anyway, long story short, you can get Leatherman tools with fixed pliers fixed under warranty - you just need to contact your countries official distributor. Chances are, they'll just send you a new replacement tool. The replaceable inserts are a nice idea, but you have to buy new ones. No warranty replacement.

Yep, they are basically just shifting the cost is the warranty to the buyer by making them replace the cutters.

Sounds like there was a heat treat issue for the wire cutting jaws. Leatherman makes those out if 154cm. The Victorinox are probably made out of the same X50CrMo14 as the rest of the multitool. I had a Swisstool Spirit X years ago and also a Leatherman Rebar, which also has those replaceable 154cm cutters (probably literally interchangeable with the ones on the Arc), and there was no comparison. The Leatherman cutters were more capable and durable. That leads me to suspect the problem is a bad heat treat.

I only have one Leatherman and it's the surge, but I don't think their blades come sharpened very well. Both my plain and serrated blades had problems that I had to fix. One tip problem and lots of burs on the edge. They weren't hard to fix but it messed up the cutting ability out of the box.
@LosRiji
@LosRiji 6 месяцев назад
Out of the box... I mean it doesn't really matter sooner or later you have to sharpen it anyway. It is the first thing I do on any knife, makes you to know your blade geometry better

Great job, and appreciate all your troubles to make this video, Thank you DBK.

A leatherman medium/full size multi w/o a diamond file isn't worth a place in your kit and this model has one. It is what leatherman excels at, brings to the table, and makes the cost worthwhile vs any and all competitors. The arc has a diamond file so once the pliers have a fix might be a good option.
