For those that don't know, the episode this song is from was Mako Iwamatsu's last day of work on the show as Iroh before he passed away due to cancer. The picture if Iroh's son is actually designed around Mako when he was young as a means to forever honor him within the show as he was never able to see the episode when it aired. Greg Baldwin who voiced Iroh in season 3 refuses to ever sing Leaves from the Vine because "It's Mako's song"

The whole episode prior to this scene is about Iroh helping citizens of Ba Sing Se in some way redeeming his sins when he tried to capture it and paying the ultimate price for it. So subtle but strong argument against violence. That's why I love this show. It speaks about difficult subjects with metaphors understandable for everyone.

However, o think the beauty of that episode is that Iroh is not doing it for the exact purpose of redemption, not thinking behind it. It is pure, natural goodness, because you see him do that from day one in the show. I think what shows the most is the futility of the war he was fighting, that ultimately led to his son dying. In the end it didn't matter if the fore nation had the city or not, what matters is the people, and the little things in life; like his son, and spending a sundown with him.

More than that, every person he helps is a man, each at a different point on his journey through life. He comforts the sad little boy, guides and understands the troublesome teenagers/adolescents, and helps the fully grown, yet lost man find his way again. All of these represent the father he used to be, the father he so badly wishes he was, and the father he’s trying so desperately to be for Zuko. Breaks my heart every time

This scene is sad on so many lvl Mako died. This was his swan song Iroh relives losing lu ten. The people that he help was all the growstages of his son. The poster was a letter of his son saying. I see you after the war. Your loyal soldier lu ten. Which connect to this song.

@@warriormaiden9829 From a bit of googling it seems that "resting all alone" should maybe be "resting on the loam", loam being a type of soil. That makes sense to me since it fits / rhymes perfectly with "foam", and makes sense thematically with falling leaves (falling to the ground).

This song gets me every-time, reminding me of my grandfather. His oldest daughter died young in a car wreck, yet he was the wisest and strongest man I ever knew and he always pushed on even when times go hard. He meant so much to me. He and Iroh were so much alike and I will never forget that.

This is beautiful! This song I started humming for my newborn daughter in March and it stills puts her to sleep 5 months later. Means so much to me as her older sister passed away at birth, so in a way I relate to Iroh's sorrow.

Even the first time i heard this song sung by iroh as a child i cried. I still do. But now that i actually grew up and know the actual story behind the song it hits different and i always feel a deep sadness for Iroh. One of the most inspirational anime characters i know of.

This, for me, was one of the most sorrowful points in the show, and displayed a truly deep side of Uncle Iroh's character. He is a beautiful person and I am honored to have seen and heard him. I cried so hard listening to Taylor Davis play this. Taylor, thank you so much for covering this song. Your honor never left you. But now, it has doubled.

Ellie and Carl was sad but in a beautiful kind of way, Ellie was happy the whole time despite what Carl thought and he knows that now. I would trade that moment for Mufasa's fall in the Lion King, which we have to remember the first time we did *NOT* see coming, a whole future cut away. Simba became an _adult_ before resolving his tragic past that turned his entire savannah into a literal wasteland.
