This lecture continues to observe the legacy of Enlightenment rationalism critiqued by the great poets and novelists. Here we turn to the twentieth-century novel, focussing on its dystopian form.
At this point, we see that the thought experiment of Rene Descartes, which has played out in the development of a human sciences that operate in accordance with the premises of thought, but not words or incarnated being, now shows some of its full hostility to human society.
I introduce herein the idea of the panopticon, a way for the scientific planners to observe and control the populace that they purport to help.
