Poetry of Chaucer..1340.. Greatest poet of middle eng. Romance stories told in tale ... The Knight stars.. Arthur. Canterbury tales...tales in verse(17000)..+ 2 stories in prose. Canterbury (England) 2+2 stories every one will tell. 29+poet =30 people *4=120 stories were to be told. Metres came to English fr French. 2metres=1foot Dev of literature during this period: Short tales in verse.. Romance ..longer story..related to elite..their were high class people..princes, warriors etc. Histories, Chronicles,... history of England.. 1.Robert of gluster 2.Robert Manning of brouny..story of England, handlyng syn.. Ormulum.by.orm (1200) Didactic poem: the owl and Nightingale (anonymous) Cursonemunde.. all Bible stories. Gwayne.. Romance s ..King horn Havelock the Dan. Marc de Arthur.. Religious rightings.. Virgin Mary.. cuckoo's song. Prose was second choice.. Ancrene rieval .. Ernest hemming way ..learned my style fr Bible(20th c writer) Kings James Bible ..mid English. ??? (1558-1603 queen Elizabeth)

Chaucer was French by culture. He wrote both in French and English. Strangely his works survive solely in English.
