In the UK certainly it didn't always have the reputation it has now, it was considered strong but not at the level of LZ2 and LZ4. Funny how perception has gradually changed over the years - Physical Graffiti and Houses of the Holy have upped their reputation, though I wouldn't say that any album is less regarded, they're all great!

What slays me is that whenever the diversity of this album is mentioned by the "critics",they always mention the hard rock,folk,blues and even progressive rock elements. But what almost never gets mentioned is the pure FUNK. And I don't mean it sounds funky,I mean there are straight up funk elements on this track and also Trampled Under Foot and a little bit in Sick Again. I mean beats underneath it all that could have straight up been lifted from a Stevie Wonder,Sly and the Family Stone or Ohio Players session. Just to name three. And I say this with the highest praise,because I was digging on all that shit back in the day too. (Wanna get stoned at the house party...Zeppelin,Yes,PF,Jimi and all that. Want the girls shakin' that ass...put the funk on.)
@turnsufficient4971
@turnsufficient4971 Год назад
Charles Markley - Definitely nailed it on your take of this album. Led Zeppelin is pretty diverse as well. The main diversity comes from the fact that eight tracks were written specifically for the album and seven songs were outtakes from previous albums - LZ III through Houses of the Holy.

Well,yes and no. It's their best album,for sure. But keep in mind that half of it is comprised of outtakes from previous albums. Hell,my personal favorite,"The Rover" failed to make the cut twice...as an acoustic number on LZ III and then as a reworked electric cut for the Houses Of The Holy album. Personally,I'd take The Rover and also the song Houses of the Holy over ANY track on the HOTH album. Just my personal preference.

This song took inspiration from several blues songs, notably Bukka White's "Shake 'Em on Down" and Sleepy John Estes' "Drop Down Mama" in addition to others. Jonesy plays a fun and funky clavinet while Jimmy achieves a rude, growly tone by using a wah through an ARP synthesizer and Robert's gravelly voice (he'd recently had vocal cord surgery) perfectly matches the overall vibe, with his honking harmonica to seal the deal. This song is a perfect mix of gritty, hard rock with heavy, rude blues.

Just a monster opener and even though the 2 LP is a mixed bag there are some astounding tracks on this. When I first heard this I was 14 in 1976, hanging out in a back seat, drivin around at night in a Chevy station wagon w the woody finish with some crazies of all ages. Buds for drinkin and smokin taking every side road and listened to this whole album for hours. About as close the Dazed and Confused movie as you could get. Sweet memories indeed.

This album was No1 in the USA for six weeks. It has been stated that for a 4 week period in the USA & Canada it was selling 500 copies every hour. It was a selling frenzy. It is the only time in the modern music industry that a record processing plant could not keep up with demand. Atlantic literally could not press enough copies to supply the stores. The American music press described the albums six week stay at No1 as "Graffiti Mania". It was the first time the US music press had used the term "Mania" since the days of The Beatles. It is not Led Zeppelin`s biggest selling album, but it is their fastest selling album. It was an absolute phenomenon. One of the very few albums I would describe as "perfect". The fact that Led Zeppelin could maintain such a level of supreme quality over a double album shows that they were at the absolute peak of their powers. I recall one journalist using two wonderful terms to describe the position Led Zeppelin were in following this albums success; he said, "In terms of popularity they were now.....OFF THE SCALE". He was asked how he would describe their popularity in the USA; he said,....."Imagine The Beatles without the screaming".

The cover art of this epic record was almost as great as the record itself. A lot of work went into its creation. Sadly my first-run original copy is long gone. Being nine years old combined with the frequency of play ended up trashing it. After finding a pristine copy in a used record store in 1982ish (age 17), I ended up tossing it. Boy do I regret that. "The original album jacket included internal sleeves that could be swapped out to present different scenes in the St. Mark’s Place building. One such scene is, of course, the red letters that spell out “Physical Graffiti” in each window. Another sleeve scene includes photos of notable celebrities in each window, including W. C. Fields, Pope Leo XIII, and Buzz Aldrin."

I don't think I've come up with much, and I think that may be because Zep created such a variety of musical styles in their work after their first two albums that everything just sounds like Zep. This song oozes sex, musically, lyrically and atmospherically. This album is as heavy as a neutron star.

if you ever see a current blues artist that plays harmonica,(In the blues genre you call it a Harp), most likely they will be using a microphone that looks like a 1930s model of a spaceship. Its either really old. Or its a replica. The ribbon mics from long ago are sensitive to certain ranges, tones, and especially the harp. It gives it the down-and-dirty distortion effect that most blues harp players are shooting for. You can definitely hear it on this track and "When the Levee Breaks"

Number one Rock LP on Billboard the week I graduated from High School. It debuted at #1. That was a great time to be young and alive!

It's a good night when fresh APB Rolling Stones and Zep videos are waiting when I log on. And the first Physical Graffiti reaction too! Allegedly the building on the PG album cover is the same one Keith and Mick sat on the steps of during the Waiting on a Friend video.

The wa-wa pedal on guitar, Cream's "White Room" has my favorite wa-wa solo by Eric Clapton.

Much respect to catching multiple Beastie Boys songs that samples from Zep, this song also had a very quick sample in "Time to get Ill" around the 2:44 mark.(combined with CCR's "Down on the Corner"). I also had heard "She's Crafty" and "Rhymin & Stealin" before hearing the originals so it was a nice surprise that you younger gentlemen were also familiar with Licensed to Ill, one of my fave old school hip hop albums. R&S not only sampled Levee's drums, but also Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" guitar riff, another band you should do a deep dive into. Sabbath early albums were dropping at the same time as Zep's early ones so I think you'd dig the music since they are also heavily Blues based. Bill Ward is the drummer for Sabbath and he also is an amazing drummer with a unique sound that I'm sure you'll enjoy. Keep`em coming, I'm enjoying your Led Zeppelin reactions.

It's a funky dirty thick custard blues riff. Jimmy Page had so many riffs all his. He is amazingly creative.
