I like the fact that you’re listening critically…. And you’re speaking your mind. This album did divide opinions when it came out. You should give it another go, maybe when you’re not so tired. There are definitely some exquisite diamonds there.
Some advice, take it or leave it: When you do videos, it's best to get some rest. Yawning makes it seem like you are disinterested or lazy. Getting rest is a part of preparation. Treat your viewers as if you are doing a job interview or making a sale.
Need to be more open minded remember the technology artist use today compared to Yester Year....The Led Zeppelin Sound has Stood the test of time ....❤
As a huge Zep fan this album took me by far the longest to get into. Its a grower for sure. I can't wait for you to check out 4, Houses of the Holy, and physical Graffiti. Those 3 albums are so much more experimental and amazing than 1-3 in my opinion.
I'll give you Graffiti and Houses but IV isn't really experimental it's pretty much the same format as 1-3 as far as standard hard rock albums go, but it is definitely better than 1-3
You have to keep in mind that this era was a huge evolution in Rock music. So this is very likely engineered just how Jimmy wanted it. He did remaster their albums in 1990, so you could see how that sounds.
Zeppelin IV is most certainly amazing, but my personal favorite (and I'm sure many other peoples favorite) is Physical Graffiti. That album is not only my favorite Led Zeppelin album, but along with the White Album by the Beatles, my 2 favorite albums of all time. And the more you listen to these songs, the more you'll realize that Since I've Been Loving You is not only one of the greatest tracks on this album, but indeed, one of the greatest achievements in audio recording history. Peace
Probably my overall fav album because of the mix up with the folk music ..They should have added Hey Hey What can I Do and Poor Tom instead of Hats off to Roy Harper but I do like it
This is definitely not my favorite album of theirs, but I don't consider it poorly executed. I think that within its proposal of being a more folk-oriented album, it does this very well.
I'll say a couple of Zeps albums take a few listens to fully appreciate. On Physical Graffiti which is a great album there were a fee songs that took a bit to appreciate because they were very different and unique. So not going to knock you for being tired because I don't know what you got going on, but I've found in my 60 years of life that you look at things differently and enjoy them more when your rested. Example imagine going to say a amusement park or even the show when your very tired verse well rested there 2 totally different experiences. Just a thought
also love the fact that you're being critical and not just gobbling up the songs for views it makes it really interesting probably because i honestly agree with your takes lmao
What a great album. Third masterpiece in a row. 3 more Masterpieces to go….and then their catalogue finishes off with three solid albums…..Presence/Outdoor/Coda. 👍
You really need some musical experience or be musician to “get” this music on one listen. This is complicated mixed genre music and for a “bombastic” band to pull this off is highly impressive.
@@DAVECHER I find that you’re quite perceptive and pick up on things others don’t, like Bonzo’s “lazy fills”, as you call them (I wouldn’t use the word ‘lazy’, though). Regarding the acoustic character of this album specifically, it took time to grow on me, as was the case many.
Their live versions of since I’ve been loving you has almost rendered the studio version unlistenable to me. No disrespect to the studio version but the live version is just that good.
I love your analysis dude. Very honest! I grew up discovering Zeppelin in the early 80s... album by album. And I'll say that this one I had the same first reaction to at first listen. All in one night ... then, into the 3rd go through... I got it! I'd love to see your reaction after you've listened to the whole thing a few times. Keep up the good work bro! I love it!
It’s a little hard to explain but In defense of the band this was intentional because they didn’t want to be branded as Whole lotta love PT 2, So they went in a different direction and then again this was fifty years ago,so there’s that
Gallow’s Pole is a traditional British folk song from the 1600s. As a schoolboy at the end of the 59s into the 60s we learnt this song in class. I think it must’ve been part of the British schools music curriculum. My guess, as Page is only slightly older than me, is that Page heard this song in school just as I did. There is a version of Gallow’s Pole by the black American folk and blues artist Leadbelly from the very early fifties. It is mistitled Gallis Pole. It’s a very good interpretation.
Yep understandable reaction, everyone reacted the same way when it came out UNTIL you go back to it one day and then bit by bit, it becomes one you crave listening to. But yes hated it first time I heard it too
As a 66 year old lifetime Led Zeppelin fan I was ALIVE when these albums were ORIGINALLY released!!😮 The FIRST album that I PURCHASED was Led Zeppelin II, THREE had NOT yet been released!! Once I heard Led Zeppelin II, I IMMEDIATELY went out and got Led Zeppelin's DEBUT album and absolutely loved it!!! So I was very excited and had great anticipation for Led Zeppelin 3's release!! Yes it was DEFINITELY more acoustic than the previous TWO albums, nonetheless I fell in love with it pretty QUICKLY!! I am in agreement with you that "Since I've Been Loving You" is the standout tune on this album!! Personally I think it's Robert Plant's BEST vocal performance EVER!!!
Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” was used in several films. Here is wikipedias entry on its use in films: “Led Zeppelin originally denied Richard Linklater permission to use "Immigrant Song" in School of Rock (2003), but star Jack Black was able to convince them by making a video of himself performing the song.[24] In the movie Shrek the Third (2007), "Immigrant Song" appears in a battle scene involving the character Snow White.[25] A cover of "Immigrant Song", produced by Atticus Ross and Nine Inch Nails member Trent Reznor with vocals from Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer Karen O, plays in the trailer and throughout the title sequence of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011).[26] "Immigrant Song" was included in both the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and twice in the film itself, due to director Taika Waititi's suggestion of the song from the time of his first involvement with the film and to the persistent efforts of the movie's music supervisor Dave Jordan.”
At last! A reactor who "gets" Hats Off to Roy Harper. Most Led Zeppelin "fans" detest the track and completely miss the point that the lads were imitating the experience of listening to old Chess Records blues songs on cheap transistor radios. As pure a channeling of the Delta blues as they could have conceived.
I know this may feel like an odd direction considering 1 & 2, but oddly, even though I think it's an imperfect record, I find myself returning to 3 more often than 2 or 4. 1 will always be my favorite. It's just tight, punchy, rollicking iconic blues rock. I don't know if you plan to do their discography front to back, but I think you'll have a ball with Physical Graffiti. Just an unambiguously great record.
Love this album. I don't have a favourite but i loved the more acoustic feel of this album after 1 & 2. I think its big negative is that it has a couple of average songs but the gems are some of Zeppelin's best. Its in my top 3 albums of theirs that's for sure.
I really enjoyed your reaction, Dave-it was writhe with cautious optimism(?). I discovered Zeppelin in college along with my love of progressive music. Must say the second half of this cd is so irresistably fun and catchy. It sound so airy, sunny, and breezy. They captured the essence of summer with their sound. Pure happiness.
I'd like to recommend a few albums, maybe two. 1. Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill 2.Helmet - Betty Good 90s albums that didnt really get a lot of exposure but were great front to back
Most of the songs on here were honed in a remote Welsh cottage, Bron y raur, by Page and Plant rather than sweated out by the band in the studio. I think that translates in the way it was produced and the folkier aspect
It's worth listening to the remastered versions out loud because you can hear so many instrumental nuances in the acoustic songs. I love these acoustic live sets from around 1971, which were then reintroduced in 1975+77, because to me they show how good a band is from the ground up. Since ... is of course a masterpiece, especially live. Sometimes you need to hear something several times. At my age and environment at the time, it was easier: the albums were relatively expensive; that's why we organized listening sessions before purchasing. The artists lived primarily from the albums, so they were innovative, not from touring like today; that was more of a promo for the current album.
this one definitely took a few listens for me to get into, so i understand lol. led zeppelin iv is a classic and what catapulted them to fame so its a far more cohesive album. hope you give it a listen
Lot of people don't like it..cause it doesn't sound like the first two I really like it a lot ..is hard for me to ranked the first 6 albums cause each one is different
I absolutely love this record but I've leaned more into folk and bluegrass music so the stripped acoustic sounds are more to my liking. I still love all the others too but this one to me is absolutely fantastic.
3 is a very transitional album that’s for sure and I think you articulated very well what I didn’t like about the album at first: the messiness. And while I don’t like the last two songs to this day, the rest of the album grew immensely on me, especially Friends and Celebration Day. I wouldn’t say it’s better than 1, but I like it pretty much equally. Now, I’m very excited for the next 3. These are their best albums in my opinion!
Yes this one is not one of my favs, but still, i think its good. It’s a 7/10, for me this album falls so hard on the last 2 tracks, i strongly recommend that you continue listening to zep albums until "Physical graffiti" (another 7/10 from me, but its my hot take, its one of their most beloved). The next two (IV and Houses of the Holy) are some of my favorites albums oat
I must say the sound felt really tinny, nothing like the version i got (the Page remaster). I prefer the diverse sounding Led Zep (from album 3 onward) even though there's no denying the power of those classics from I and II. Maybe i just heard them too much, whereas III never got the airplay it deserved.
Agree, much weaker than I and II, and IV (as you know by now), though yes "Since I've Been Loving You" is a great track and the best one on the album. "Friends" , "Gallows Pole" and "Tangerine" are pretty good too. Nice job with reviewing Led Zep albums!
B stomp is a song about Robert Plants' dog. I love the raw sloppy, production, WAY WAY, so much WAY more interesting than much of today's computerized spittle. You like what you like, but the unsettling chaos is perhaps an acquired taste that a yawner will never devour to one's delight. I'm not drawn to debating you on your assessments, opinions, but obviously I'm listened for (50) years and have the depth to love the production.
My favourite LZ albulm. Different from all the rest. What will never be known by the young generation is the radical cover, which had an innr sleve whcich could be rotated to put the various band members faces in the 4 cutouts in the cover.
Creativity is not inherently a good thing, and derivation is not inherently a bad thing. Praising creativity just for the sake of being creative and criticizing derivation just for the sake of being derivative is bad criticism (for music or for anything).
OMG... reaction to this album.... The first song kicks ass, turn it on loud!.. messy songs, where are the drums,... wtf? Now I see why it is how it is today.
'not different enough' 'not divergent enough'. Could not be more incorrect. ' 'so folky' he says'in total contradiction to what he says a minute eralier. What a dill
the vocalist is lost, really 😂😂this is robert plant ffs 😳lead singer of the greatest rock band of all time, when they recorded this they were also performing almost every night of massive tours of the US and UK.
