I'm 51 and I love that song as well. I remember when I was 6 y.o. and used to listen to that album of my oldest brother. Led Zeppelin is in my blood since I was young!!! Led Zeppelin forever, my friends!!! Greetings from Brazil! 👍👍🎸🎸🍻🍻🇧🇷🇧🇷🇺🇲🇺🇲
Bonzo is halfass my hero. And I'm really a guitarist. Beats Loony Moony in my book. No disrespect to Keith, he was great too. I play bonzo style behind the kit is all. This song is why I do.
Zeppelin can do no wrong what an amazing band. I m 60 years old and I've been listening to them since I was a kid. never get tired of their music...they have been, are now,and always will be,one of the best bands ever.
Absolutely 🤘🏼 I’m 73yrs old and can remember going around the pubs in our town in the 60s with Zeppelin blasting out at full blast, what an amazing time to grow up listening to the best Rock/Blues in the world. Zeppelin will still be blasting out in generations to come they’ll never die, 🎵🎸🤘🏼
Ahead of their time...the harmonica track was recorded, then played backwards with echo. The drums were recorded in the lobby of an old mansion with microphones hanging from the second floor staircase. The guitar tracks were recorded, then the tempo was altered. This is why Led Zeppelin rarely played this song live. And when they did it wasn't the same.
Sorry guys it's just. John Bonham is what I hear when thunder rolls during storms. Bonzo is THE drummer and he did it all wasted drunk. Guy was ridiculous with the talent and cannot be replicated.
This song is an awesome recreation of Kansas Joe and Memphis Minnie's 1929 original 'When the Levee Breaks', which depicted the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Came here to remember the meaning behind the song and was let down. So here ya go! Keep history alive! 🤘
There's an interesting anecdote about those drums. Zep had rented a big house to record and had moved Bonham's drum kit temporarily into the stairwell as they were settling in. Bonzo at some point started pounding away just to pass the time, and it created this tremendous echo, so they decided to record right there in the stairwell.
_"...over a mile away and could still hear them clearly!"_ I bet. I used to live a little farther than that from a high school, and could hear their band every Friday night during football season -- and they were obviously not amplified the way a rock concert is. I imagine you could hear every note.
When The Levee Breaks - Lyrics If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break If it keeps on rainin', levee's goin' to break When the levee breaks, I'll have no place to stay. Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan, Lord Mean old levee taught me to weep and moan It's got what it takes to make a mountain man leave his home Oh well, oh well, oh well Don't it make you feel bad When you're tryin' to find your way home You don't know which way to go? If you're goin' down south They got no work to do If you're going down to Chicago. A-ah, a-ah, a-ah. Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good No, cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move, ooh. All last night sat on the levee and moaned All last night sat on the levee and moaned Thinkin' 'bout my baby and my happy home Ah-oh. Ah, ah, ah, ah Ah, ah, ah, ah Goin' I'm goin' to Chicago Goin' to Chicago Sorry, but I can't take you, ahhh Goin' down, goin' down now Goin' down, goin' down now Goin' down, goin' down Goin' down, goin' down. Goin' down, goin' down now Goin' down, goin' down now Goin' down, goin' down now Goin' down, goin' down-down-down-down-down.
Written by Memphis Minnie, with her then husband Kansas Joe in 1929. The 1927 Mississippi Delta Flood defeated the cotton field levees, leaving poor Black share cropper families out of work, and no harvest to sell. Deep water went 80 miles inland to the east. People had to build rafts. Future president Herbert Hoover was Commerce Secretary, and formed federal labor camps to keep local labor working on the levee rebuilding. A lot of incidents of violence, and sabotage of the new levees. Finally, with levees repaired, many Black people went north to Chicago, like the song says. On the back of Led Zep IV, Memphis Minnie is listed as a band member! She ended up old & alone, then fans lobbied for Minnie to be paid for her lyrics.
With ALL the great musicians over the years, I'd absolutely have to say that is a very large, or long, depending on how you look at it, but that is 1 of, if not, A VERY LARGE STRETCH! Very good? YES!!! Best ever? NO WAY!
@@youthiswastedontheyoung Yes...I believe "stolen" is the word you're looking for. However, in their defense, they did take their purloined material to places the original creators could've never imagined. So did Shakespeare.
Written by Memphis Minnie, and that is why LZ added her name on LedZep IV. Minnie was a female pioneer of electric guitar, she wrote Levee Breaks in 1929, with her then husband Kansas Joe. Later in life, she was destitute, but the LedZep song urged ASCAP to find money for her before she died.

To Golden God: thank you for the lyrics. This is poetry. All of us at some point will witness the levee breaking..... Praying will probably do no good....
@@terrybuck4385 Lol. My husband is a big Rush fan but I’m not, so he’s always talking up Peart as I roll my eyes. But we’re both die-hard Zeppelin fans from WAY back.
It's not JUST the SOUND of Bonhams drum(s) or the beautifully lonely harmonica or Robert's singing or Jimmy's crying guitar, like a Mountain Man coming to grips with this inevitability. It's all the subtleties too. Hauntingly gorgeous, melancholy never sounded so earnest.
I’ve TOTALLY MELTED into pure ECSTASY after hearing this slice of HEAVEN early this morning for the GABILLION-TIME! I remember being so young, kidless, free & a working woman getting up early & playing this SWEET-VINYL-ALBUM religiously on my turntable. Thank You LED ZEPPELIN for making me FULL-ZEN… you 💯% never seem to DISAPPOINT. Someone in TEXAS ✌🏻☮️🤍💟💃🏻
I can't believe God let me be born before this phenomenon was created!! 1962 I had the privilege of buying their first album when it came out. Greatest band ever.
Thank you Jesus for keeping me safe from the Helene floods. Moved to NC for three weeks, felt something was so off. Me and mom left ASAP was going back to Tampa, work was bad left, Debbie hit. Was in Pensacola. Went back work was bad. Left. Was in Pensacola. Helene hit. Almost went to Gaitlinburg after Ashville. God sees the future. We don't. Follow God's voice. Oh you kids... Led Zeppelin was founded in 1968. You must have been 11. I was a freshman at UMASS that year and our homecoming band was some girl from Texas singing with Big Brother & the Holding Company....Janis Joplin!
I believe JPJ was actually playing a lap steel guitar in this song as well. He’s probably the best musician in the entire band. He played all their keyboards, mandolin, recorder on STH, and of course bass. I’m sure I’m leaving stuff out.
RUBBISH ..Led Zeppelin were a great band but 1.they suffered from plagiarism 2.they were not a rock n roll band, they were a heavy rock band. 3. Greatest rock n roll band of all time is THE ROLLING STONES.

Wow, that's funny! I dreamed about this song last night and figured it's time to hear it again, read some comments and see you! Kind regards, and next I'll be listening to "No Quarter", a wonderful work by Led Zeppelin.
When people talk about drums driving a song, this is what they mean. Pretty sure this is the sound of my heart beat now because I've listened to this song that much.
1971 I was only 7years old and probably hearing Marc Bolans T Rex and David Bowie and the starts of Glam Rock. I came to Led Zeppelin later in life and I eventually stumbled upon this track. I’ve thought long and hard about this song and album. We have four individuals who are gifted beyond imagination coming together at the height of their abilities and reworked this blues song , taking it to outer space. The groove on this song is utterly fantastic. And became the blueprint for all serious bands thereafter. Sit back and take it in.
Bob? In '71 I was 7 years old also. I my brother (who was 7 years older), enjoyed listening to Led Zeppelin. Being he was in the next room, naturally I enjoyed listening to his tracks. I was hooked; especially Led Zeppelin. "When the levee breaks" doesn't take a mind reader to know the epitome of true, classic rock songs. Jon Bonham insisted that his percussion be recorded in the hallway of an English castle. How ingenuous could that be? It will take a while (if any) to meet the standards of Led Zeppelin. Hats off to Keith Moon to coin the new name of the New Yardbirds. 😉
A very happy 78th birthday to a rock guitar icon. James Patrick Page January 9, 1944, Heston, England. Thank you for making music that changed our lives.. And settting a standard for the best rock guitarist in the world. Now and in the rock future forever..

Forty two years ago today the greatest drummer climbed the Stairway to Heaven. There will never be another one like you. Never considered myself Zepplin fan. Then in my 40s heard this song on my Sony Walkman. It just blew me away. Now 68 and still listen to Zepplin 4 at least once a month.
The very best Blues Rock, pure genius in performance. Once lived within walking distance of the Mississippi River in South Louisiana and when the river rose up the levee this song always came to mind. Bonham often imitated never achieved.
I adore this Amaizing Song. The beautiful taste and feeling of flying for a long time. It sounds fantastically incomparable. It's like you are in anorher dimension or out of our time. That's exactly how it feels. Such a powerful, dense and at the same time melodious, sonorous folk-rock. GREAT SONG!!! BRAVO!!!💎💎💎💎💖
Grew up on this music. My mom had a 442 Olds that she would run airforce guys at the base..she would jam Led Zeppelin..that was in 1980 Mcord AFB . I LOVE MY MOM..THANKS FOR THE BEST MEMORIES.!
I used to put this song on while driving through the the misty mountains here in Washington state, it seemed to fit perfectly. Actually the whole album did.. Peace to all!
I'll never forget my Dad and a few of his buddies playing Zeppelin songs in our basement when I was just a little kid. He played bass, which he nicknamed his "Butch Bull Fiddle" I have that bass guitar now, but my love for the guitar is stronger so I play my Firebird. He passed away two years ago now when I was 22, so every time I hear this kick ass music, I think of my Dad! Thanks for turning me on to the greatest rock band ever Dad. RIP John Wilson Douglas.

We learned things the hardway...spiritually speaking....the only way to the Father is through the Son...Yeshua...the only begotten son of our Creator in Heaven...who came here in the flesh, living as we do,governing with His spirit over the intellect and emotions, presenting the temple back to the Father as one...
