In Part three of the Life of Lee Harvey Oswald series, Lee, Marina and baby June move to Elsbeth Street in Dallas. Lee befriends George de Mohrenschildt, and Volkmar Schmidt, who may have unwittingly influenced him in his plot against General Edwin Walker. In this episode Oswald moves ever closer to using violence to further his political views and change history. His first target? The extreme ideas of the John Birch Society and their leader Edwin Walker, a racist disgraced former general whose encouragement of a mob cost the lives of two journalists in riots on the campus of Ole Miss in 1962, riots to prevent James Meredith, a black student, from attending. The episode includes footage of the apartment on Neely Street, and the famous backyard and staircase where the infamous photos were taken. Those photos will, however, be discussed in part 4, as will the actual attempt on Walker’s life.

Give me a week or so! I have started it and basically almost finished a bonus episode today that’s a little more light hearted. Still Oswald related though.

Regarding class in Texas: I'm a born Texan, and I will say, vis-à-vis Schmidt's comments about Oswald's childhood, that in Texas, the social classes do not mix, socially. I had lived in Northern California for 7 years, and I was surprised to observe that different classes and ethnic groups mingled MUCH more freely. You can see why Oswald would have felt bitter.
@MMorbid
@MMorbid Год назад
Yeah, I had already come to that conclusion about him before even reading Schmidt’s comment. I think Oswald wanted to do great things, change history, and when you are poor and uneducated there aren’t many ways to legitimately do that without killing yourself or others. I just can’t decide if mental health treatment could have prevented this.

@@MMorbid IMMENSE social stigma in 1960's Texas against seeking a psychiatrist's help, especially for a hotheaded, macho guy like Lee.

Social class didn't seem to matter to wealthy Baron George De Morinschildt or the multi-millioniare Paine family.

I have studied the assassination since I was 11 years old. You are spot on in everything you say about Oswald. I have in my phone a picture of post office box 2915 in Dallas, a photo of the backyard where the infamous pic was taken of him holding the rifle and a communist newspaper and a pic of myself standing in Oswald's city jail cell. I noticed at 21:50 the backyard and the fence that separates it from the side ally is in a state of disrepair. That's a shame. It's possible that the person who lives there doesn't realize the significance of the address. Thank you for your factually correct synopsis of LHO. Looking forward to the next one. Keep up the good work!!

Thank you so much, I am so glad to get approval from somebody who has studied this for so long. I wish I’d had that photo of the PO Box. That fence you mentioned is basically falling down. I don’t believe the building is currently occupied and I got the impression from people I met in Dallas that there is some concern about the building’s future. I wish I could see inside. I want to see his little murder planning office. The only up side to the fence falling down is it made it very easy to see the yard and staircase.

Oswald's job when he was working at Jaggars-Chiles was to use his aviation radar skills he had learned in the Marines to help take ariel reconnaissance photos of Cuba. You know, being hired by a White Russian to a CIA connected firm performing a task that allows the U.S. to spy on Cuba and undermine Soviet attempts to arm missiles there kinda makes it seem like he wasn't very good at being a communist.

Mariana came out years later to say her husband, Oswald, was probably innocent, which is strange considering the circumstances of their marriage.
@MMorbid
@MMorbid Год назад
I know, it is so strange. My guess is hearing conspiracies made her question her own memories and I would think it might simply be comforting to convince yourself your husband didn’t do such horrible things. The human brain is so complex it’s possible she believes it at this point.
@tigger06

I wonder how you can know what the conversations with Marina were ? The words they used...I assume that she must have told others what transpired between them. I truly don't think that he would. Most he didnt want anyone to know. If course they heard the fights between them. But unless she told, no one could know what was said between them. Just curious
@MMorbid
@MMorbid Год назад
The book this came from is by Patricia McMillan who nearly lived with Marina for months in 1964, so everything is Marina’s recollection of these conversations. The quotes come from the book, hence the quotes, but since they are from Marina’s memories they’re certainly not exact since human memory simply isn’t very good. But one year isn’t too bad, and will be a lot more reliable than anything gathered decades later.

No Walker had nothing to do with it. Nor did Lee Oswald. It’s been proven Lee wasn’t even in Dallas during the assassination. And everybody agrees there were 8 shots fired from multiple different locations. Though they were synchronized to fool the majority of ear witnesses to believe there were only 3 shots.
