To mark Lee Kuan Yew's 100th birth anniversary on Sep 16, 2023, CNA is looking back at his more memorable quotes. cna.asia/leekuanyewquotes
At the 1986 National Day Rally, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew spoke about the social and cultural factors that have made Singapore successful economically. He made no apologies of micromanaging Singaporeans' lives and way of living - from the languages used, to the neighbours they live with. Watch an excerpt from his speech on Aug 17, 1986.
Watch the full documentary special Lee Kuan Yew: In His Own Words on Sep 15, 9pm on CNA's RU-vid channel.

In western culture, the last statement is ALWAYS omitted, "you pay the price". Paying the price meant the responsibilities and consequences of your choice
@keiththomas1180
@keiththomas1180 5 месяцев назад
I think they omitte that because Westerners already know that, it's common knowledge and politicians over there know that. In Asia, politicians treat voters like children and place fear in their hearts so that the public will comply with whatever they want to do
@ramieskola7845
@ramieskola7845 5 месяцев назад
It was obvious to all for a long time. Then came the traitors and ideological subversion. What we have now in the west is not indigenous but alien. An ideological poison imposed on us by a hostile force. Yes. You may call this conspiracy theory. I however would not promote this to the status of theory yet. It is just a plausible hypothesis before all evidence is organized and chronology of events is discovered and documented.

@CT-cl9wi Recently, the West hasn't just not understood the consequences. It feels like most Westerners barely understand anything. One of the greatest policies Lee kuan Yew introduced was zero tolerance towards narcotics. You crack down on narcotics like nobody's business, you keep half of the societal problems including organized drug crimes away.
@jonathanmatthew1263
@jonathanmatthew1263 Месяц назад
1. The prohibition of narcotics is only possible because it's a very small island. 2. organized drug cartels launder their money in Singapore so.... They aren't actually keeping out organized criminals.
@jonathanchia9167
@jonathanchia9167 Месяц назад
launder money in singapore is different from selling drugs in singapore. Its so difficult to keep money launderers out due to the many tactical ways to get money into singapore banks. Also due to the stability of the economic, criminals see properties as a way to wash money. No government can stop them unless a trail of money is present. Thats the reason compliance officers are in high demand in singapore banks/institutes. @@jonathanmatthew1263

Or just decriminalize drugs, provide better public services that deal with inherent characteristics of addiction, mental health, poverty, etc. Then you don’t have a punitive society and you deal with the root issues.

Drugs don’t get into Singapore largely due to the zero tolerance policy so there aren’t drug dealers to arrest or addicts that require treatment, or the poverty and large scale social issues that other countries deal with as a result.

"But we either believe in democracy or we don't. If we do, then, we must say categorically, without qualification, that no restraint from the any democratic processes, other than by the ordinary law of the land, should be allowed... If you believe in democracy, you must believe in it unconditionally. If you believe that men should be free, then, they should have the right of free association, of free speech, of free publication. Then, no law should permit those democratic processes to be set at nought, and no excuse, whether of security, should allow a government to be deterred from doing what it knows to be right, and what it must know to be right..." As an Indonesian whose country has labored under the same kinds of arguments that Lee would famously use later in life, I often wonder what happened to this 31-year-old from Singapore, only five days into Leadership of the Opposition, in whom the flames of idealism burned. Perhaps if UMNO had not brutalized him and brutalized Singapore the way it did, perhaps if Malaysia had been a kinder Malaysia in those fateful years, he would not be so despairingly cynical and so devoid of hope, and perhaps he would not chase a great Singapore at the expense of a good Singapore as single-mindedly as he did.

I cry listening to this visionary leader. I cry because Kwame Nkrumah would have brought same development to my motherland, GHANA if not for some unscrupulous, miscreants and barbaric individuals used against him from within, supported by the West

Yes it's true that it was very effective in the past where people weren't as educated or as smart. However sticking to the same strategy in this fast paced world would backfire. The "I'm smarter than you so trust me" approach would only slow down the citizens and Singapore would lose its competitive edge. Instead, it should aim to empower singaporeans now. Sending them out against the best of other countries while telling them "just try, no matter what Singapore will have your back" That's the way to succeed

Thank you to the many so called lovers of Democracy in this comment sections who are worried about the government of other countries while they themselves cannot fix the corrupted government and the poverty in their country. 😂😂. As for me, whether it's Democracy, Socialist, Communists,etc, every kind of government is good. What matters is not the government, but the one that is put in charge to govern that country.

@testacals stop being delusional. Communism versus Democracy. India has more diversity and is open to dialogue. India has had to recover from bristish colonialism and being conquered by various other countries. China hasnt had to, just open its doors to trade after having a closed door policy for many decades. That's why China seems ahead, India will catch up gracefully and come out better, to compete with not only China but the world.

@@riyabejoy5158 This comment shows you have no understanding of history. Ever heard of r@pe of nankin ? China was invaded both by the brits and the japanese and even went through a civil war. To act like the fact that china had a single party with a single vision controlling china from begining to end didn't give china an advantage over india is dumb. India will never surpass china or even come close to china with the current governing system

Malay is Singapore's official national language. This is a nod to our roots as having previously been part of Malaysia and when the island was known as Temasek for a few centuries before. Our national anthem is also in Malay. English is the first language. Mandarin, Malay and Tamil are all mother-tongue languages.
