In his prime, Lee was unreal! If you go read his performance record, you will see it. I was built similarly in height, weight, etc. to Lee and as a kid I tried to mirror his stance, grip, swing. He set up pretty open. When asked about it once he said it helped him turn and clear his hips. It does. I experimented and found how far to open my stance and how far to open my left foot. After that, my game improved a lot. I can thrive with a power fade, but as he stated, a hook? Lots of trouble there. Some folks can do the power draw. I can somewhat, but not consistently. I love Lee's instruction. He makes learning easy and fun.

I spoke with Lee @ the Senior TPC @ Ford in Michigan years ago..... I got a few words in! He finished the conversation by starting to tell a joke, and the field opened up, he walked up to his ball, hit it without any practice strokes, and put it a few feet from the pin (from 150 years out...) and continued his joke!

When I just started getting interested in the game of golf...I went to the old Buick Open. I ended up watching the 2nd hole, a par 4, near the area where the players drives would end up. I'm standing at the ropes and a ball rolls up right next to my foot. Minutes later Lee Trevino walks up joking around and clearing room for his 2nd shot. He was looking at about 150 yds...but he was behind a large group of trees so the shot called for a significant hook. To complicate the shot more, the pin was way back left with a large bunker right in front of the pin. Trevino looks a me and says "you probably think this is a hard shot don't you?" I say "Hell yes!" Hey says "Watch this". He hits a low hook that had to turn at least 40 yards left. It rolled up to the green, all the way to the back, around the bunker and 3 feet from the hole. He says "Golf isn't so hard!" I was speechless.

Love Trevino. I followed him in the mid 90's at a Senior event in Long Island with my then 9 or 10 yr old son. Magician with a club. We were standing around the chipping green before the round and i shouted out "Hey Lee is that a lob wedge ? he turned to me and said " No i dont have one of those, i just open up my sand wedge like this". I recently sold my lob wedge and now my highest lofted wedge is my 56 deg. SW. Def. thought of his advice/story and it makes sense. Great guy and who came from nothing. Can listen to him for hours!

His 80 year old head full of hair resonated with me big time. That, and the fact he is one of the greatest shot makers and characters in the history of the sport. Trevino is Legend. PS Ill never forget 25 years ago him predicting Tiger would have physical limits based on his type of swing..............sage. Exactly correct. Tiger changed his swing to accommodate his back and knees. Lee is golf genius underneath all that folksy "dig your swing from the dirt" talk. Legend.

This is so spot on. Last night I had all pars or bogeys for the first 9 holes because I hit the fairway or green. I missed the 10th fairway, and was under a tree. Instead of taking my medicine and chipping out I went for the “hero” shot, and ended up making triple bogey.
@KneePainCenters
@KneePainCenters Год назад
One of our team members was just sayin' the same thing you did. It's so hard to follow Trevino's advice and curb the temptation to play hero ball, but for the long game and to have probability in your favor, it's a smart move.

Overlap, double-overlap, or 10 finger. All work just fine as long as you keep your hands married together. You should feel and control the clubhead with both hands.
@TeddyCavachon
@TeddyCavachon Год назад
What he says about the trail hand position so true.. Starting with it over the top make the trail wrist go into maxed out extension sooner which forces trail elbow to fold down creating tremendous leverage, the same sequence and leverage a sever uses to lift a heavy tray over the shoulder. That leverage is even more critical on the way down to prevent the club force from pulling lead arm and hand out from the body and club head outside of the ball causing a slice to occur. It is easier to get the hands on the grip properly by holding it in the air with shaft vertical with bend elbows then letting it fall forward straightening the arms. When it talks about releasing the club it means letting the club force whipping club head down around hand pull them thumbs down like casting with a fly rod or cracking a whip.

@michaelwalsh564
@michaelwalsh564 Год назад
I understand the concept wanting to chip uphill and not get above the hole, but I didn't really understand the explanation of the "180" line. Is that a way of conceptualizing bisecting the green?
@KneePainCenters
@KneePainCenters Год назад
We think you're on the right track 😉
@dbc7772011
@dbc7772011 Год назад
I didn’t understand that either. I thought he was talking about the approach shot distance. The bisecting the green in half (180 line ) makes more sense. Thx I was hoping someone else didn’t follow that.
@michaelwalsh564
@michaelwalsh564 Год назад
@@dbc7772011 - And I guess it could be bisected in any direction that makes sense - for instance, if the green slopes from right to left, then you'd bisect the green from front to back and the miss would be on the left so you are putting/chipping up the slope. I think? Might be a good way to look at things even if it's not what Lee meant, exactly.
@gabeh7923
