When I arrived in Leeds over 40 years ago all these pubs and countless others were thriving . But then came the inner ring road which sweep away whole communities. Mass car ownership followed and with it the social fabric of Leeds was torn to shreds.
@frogandspanner
@frogandspanner 3 года назад
I remember when they demolished the terraced houses in Hunslet to make way for the hideous Leek Street development. They initially left the pubs standing, so it was great for a pub crawl - out of one pub and stumble over the bricks, memories and dreams of countless lives on the way to the next spittoon-equipped hostel.

Was it the ring road? not sure about that, maybe a different demographic and a chaning world?

What people often forget is that nearly all these pubs had a football or rugby team attached to them. Some had more than one playing in Saturday and Sunday leagues. Leeds no longer has the multitude of leagues that we used to have.

Agree, must be the same all over the country.
@stephenhodgson3506

@@Catmanyorkshire I would have thought so. If I remember right at one time there were twelve Leagues on a Sunday and each had about twelve teams. I know that the Shaftesbury had a first and second team for Saturdays and a team on Sunday as well. I sometimes wonder if the obesity crisis is down to the fact that we no longer have all these people playing regular football.

I was in a discussion very recently concerning where there will be any pubs left for old gits like me to go for a pint.All these gone and only ever replaced with some poncy wine bar that does a good line in cocktails at £8 a go.

Even in the 1970's you could go in a pub on a midweek night and find yourself alone. People's choice of entertainment changed and as with cinemas people preferred to stop at home and watch the telly. Younger generations didn't want to spend the night in a pub just drinking. Then along came cheap booze from supermarkets and people began to ask why should I pay so much more in a pub when I can get it cheaper in a supermarket? As smoking became anti-social I don't think the smoking ban had a great deal of impact as fewer and fewer people were smoking anyway. Far too many pubs stuck with a business model that had become outdated and irrelevant to the times and so they lost their customers. Then we got the extension of drinking hours and pubs had to pay their staff more or get more staff for the extra hours and straining overheads became too much for many.

Once had a pub crawl after an already heavy session (a good four or five hours) in the Three Legs. Went in Hoagy's, then the Regent, Plasterer's Arms, Granville, Fountain, Florence Nightingale, Dock Green, skipped the Compton and had the last pint in the Fairway. Had one or sometimes two pints in each. Stayed in Dock Green quite a while, no idea how many pints had in there. Nearly all those pubs gone now. That day I got home so drunk that I genuinely thought we had a downstairs toilet, I can still picture it now, blue and white decor. In actuality it was a meter cupboard under the stairs where we put our coats and shoes. I saw the toilet though, and started peeing. One second I'm seeing the toilet, and the next I'm seeing our front door from the outside, my mrs had managed to get me out mid pee. Never been as drunk before or since.

Hopefully the Original Oak, The Skyrack and the New Inn, in Headingley are still going? Would guess so as it’s a student area. Left Leeds in 1993 - haven’t been back since. Doubt I’d know my way around!

@@Spedupguy69 Thank you 👍. My family lived in Victoria Terrace, from 1947 until 1976, only about 50 yards from the New Inn which was my Grandfather’s local, he used to go in on a Saturday afternoon with his friends to have a pint and watch the horse racing on the television . The landlord was a Mr Cyril Lewis, a very smart and dapper man. It was a BYB (Bentleys Yorkshire Brewery) pub in the 50’s until they were either taken over or went out of business in the 1960’s and it then became a Tetley’s pub. Far Headingley, as it was known, was a lovely area to live and I enjoyed a very happy childhood there. The New Inn was a lovely pub and many of its customers were very nice local people. I have very fond memories of it.

All these new ring roads have not made Leeds an easy place to get to , in fact they have made it more difficult to get to the city centre. Car parks are run by Asian syndicates with bad attitudes, which doesn't help. Something needs to be done to reverse the insane trend.

Ann Morton it’s ur councils mate... and changes that inevitable .. places r becoming more industrialised for business people and students .. it doesn’t cater to local ppl and everyday consumers .. high end cocktail bars are overshadowing family pubs ... like chinese and indians food over fish n chips
@stevenhickenjr
@stevenhickenjr 4 года назад
@@southsudani983 That isn't really true. Catering for business people and students only really applies to the Inner City where the majority of them reside. Fancy cocktail bars only really exist in the city center, you wouldn't find them in working class suburbs. I know many people from my community wouldn't dream of paying £6 a pint or have expensive cocktails, they don't go to such establishments. There is an argument that immigration has damaged pubs but this only really applies to places like Harehills where there are large numbers of people who don't drink due to their religion. In terms of working class white British areas the real killer for pubs is the supermarkets. Booze is very cheap and is easily accessible. Due to the license costs and taxes on pubs there was a spike of them closing a few years ago. Many of them were knocked down and were turned into houses. Even today they are struggling due to survive but the communities have started to come back together and use them which is keeping the remaining pubs alive. It's nice to see but it's a far cry from how it was in my dad's era in the 70/80s where live bands were on every night and beer was extremely cheap.

Things they pretty much all had in common...they were nearly all shithouses. Cold, unatmospheric shithouses. I went in a lot of them and they were awful compared to the pubs still going today. Anyone remember going in the Fernlea? That place was an utter fucking dump. In most of those pubs you didn’t know if your car was going to be broken into, trashed or stolen. Remember there are many many pubs still thriving that are very enjoyable to go into. I saw The Meteors at the Astoria so I’m sad about that and I’ve had many a good night playing pool in Hoagys at the bottom of the head row.

Hi @@Aaron.308, When Living with my parents it was the Welcome Inn Tinshill Leeds 16. After work it was the Old Ball Horsforth. When at Building College it was the Students Union but at the end of a term it was an old Edwardian pub half way up a narrow alley near the Empire can't remember its name but it served great food. When I qualified as a Surveyor travelled mos of the UK finally settling in London where I was a Regular at the Town of Ramsgate where they did the executions of pirates. When we moved to the other side of the river changed to the Dog and Bell in Deptford. Retired and moved to East Sussex the village has three pubs and the one I attend is the Green Man which is a Harveys is the local Brewery. I tend to stick to Harveys
