i love how all of these remain so memorable; the amount of effort in sound design, orchestrated little “bacterias” and the game’s OST, to a PSYCHOLOGIST?? wow. i’m mostly impressed with the ears for music that made the bacterias and the ‘affected’ songs. it was said that the soundtrack for L4D didn’t want to create the feeling of getting hit by these guys, but PORTRAY the exact emotions you feel when you get spat, grabbed, and pounced on. Hunter- drums are extremely fast and steady, mimicking the amount of damage hunter can deal in a short amount of time, like the feeling that you are *LITERALLY* getting your insides torn out, with harsh, high pitched strikes on the strings. the choir rotates through very high notes in a seemingly random order, creating that distressful, quick, disorderly feeling that you’re being killed REALLY fast. Jockey- an EXTREMELY loud presentation on both sets of strings, as well as the brass instruments sounding erratic and random, like it’s circling the player’s ears, misdirecting them, leading them somewhere they don’t know; just like a jockey’s ride. the choir never eases that tension, and creates the feeling that you are being misled and forced into danger. Charger- it seems that the strings, brass, and choir are very dramatic and repetitive, almost mimicking the bpm a charger slams the survivor into the ground! a theme for your own method of murder. for the collateral hit, its mimicking exactly what it sounds; like a charger slamming through and striking the snare, and abrupt because you sort of just.. get tossed. i think it was supposed to be a bit extended/changed, since it doesn’t sound AS distinct as the other ones, but i’m reminded that charger was pretty much rushed in development (if you’ve seen his up-throw and forward slam animations you’d believe me) Smoker- one of my favorites. the descending piano keys create a feeling of helplessness, like you’re the last one to turn the corner in an alley, but you just barely reached the clearing- and something is slowly pulling you back in from your flank.. when the horns come in and the choir sings in your anguish, it gives that feeling of “dangling” like you’re trying to wriggle free of a spider’s web, except its some 5’10 dude with a gross looking tongue-testine. you got pulled away from the crowd by something you couldn’t even see and it managed to restrain you instantly, and now you’re done for. the woodwind emphasizes that feeling that you’re just out of reach from your teammates.. but not from a smoker. Boomer- that windy sound you hear hovering over the choir, and the slight muffled effect that starts preventing you from seeing straight.. boomer bile. it’s a little lacking, but i think that’s the point, as the horde is going to do cause most of the panic and, your blinded teammates aren’t going be able to easily save you from anything else that arrives from the green-stained shadows.. Spitter: the choir and strings start intensifying the longer the song goes on, especially the strings in the back that are creating that “hrrrrr.. hrrrr..”, the tremolo; which mimics the danger of remaining in a spitter’s acid for a long time. it’s especially effective when on a downed player, cause rest assured, they’re gonna hear the whole thing. the constant noise of acid damage and the increased dmg-over-time also helps induce that panic, as anything that pins you in it/surrounds you, makes you take that 80 damage puddle like a man. witch- following her cries, the choir goes through its own unique scaling of notes, though the rapid ascension and descent never leaves room to breathe- the scale feels incomplete and without conclusion, keeping that tense feeling (accompanied by the constant tapping of piano notes), along with a hint of mystery. why do we hear crying? and why is it now.. growling..? angered witch.. a feeling of “holy shit, I PISSED THE WITCH OFF!” in its perfect form. the horns blaring like she’s on your tail, and the little woodwind’s scale ending back on its 3rd note on both octaves. the drums constantly thumping to emphasize that shit just got real. the choir raises up its last few notes in its scale, but it stays there for the remainder of the song, instead of descending back to the typical witch’s ‘passive’-sounding one Tank- i don’t really need to explain this one, do i? big zombie boss. definitely the most musically diverse, and the fact that it is reprised in the escape theme of both games when rescue has finally reached our crew. just what i thought tho

You only forgot the one where you are the survivor being pulled in by the smoker not attacked but besides that you got all of it. Great video!

The charger mortificate your spine. The hunter exenterate your organs. The jockey vassalate your head. And the smoker asphyxiate your lungs. All of them would give me PTSD

the names of the attack tracks are so weirdly scary. they are these kind of big, uncommon words that give off this clinical, unrelatable vibe; like whats being done to you is being described by a cold, unfeeling observer.

The fact that Jockey's theme is named "Vassalation" is pretty cool

These special infected themes always have one moment in the song, especially for the pinning effective. Usually, after 10/15 seconds, is when you reach a certain part of the song and realize that your team isn't coming to save you. For instance, the smoker theme starts at 1:51, but if it goes for about 10/15 seconds, 2:07, more dread and hopelessness sets in and you know your team decided you weren't worth the risk, and left.
