pinning this comment for people to inevitably not read: when I talk about not knowing who the voice actors were, I was specifically referring to not knowing who voiced Zoey, Louis and Francis. The new survivors are pretty easy to find on google. Just pinning this one because this is like 50% of the comments since a lot of people seem to struggle with the listening comprehension of that part.
@@rossgaller960 Used to be super common, but now they’re a rarity. You don’t get much money from Quarters or a couple dollars from the old methods of arcade machines anymore. Most establishments with arcades have it as a *section* to coincide the regular business (could be a hotel, diner, pizzeria, etc.), and to make it profitable, they often lock them behind a dedicated card that you use for the machines that you can put funds into. I think they also manually set the prices for the card readers of the machines, so they might be a bit more expensive to play - though usually by just a couple dollars - compared to what it costed in the past (this is running off of memory from the last time I’ve been to a modern arcade).
@@Dr.Oofers damn , here in Japan arcades are like esports here ... From tekken 7, gundam extreme vs to other competitive DBZ or other shooter games etc etc ... u will even find a ton of arcade open world RPGs too .. The majority of Japanese gamers still play arcade rather than pc or console stuff .. Mobile gaming is also increasing these days
The thing I love most about this version is how they built up four new unique characters going into the same exact path that the original four American survivors did, while somehow writing it all from the ground up in such a way that makes sense for the most part: a bunch of exchange students and teachers on a trip abroad getting caught in the zombie apocalypse in a different country. And it works. All this effort... for an arcade game that didn't even last that long. I'm so glad it's possible to mod some of this into L4D2. It somehow made the same old maps feel fresh when you got entirely new folks running through them, bantering with one another, and dealing with the same stuff Ellis, Coach, Rochelle, and Nick did in their own way.
@@daegnaxqelil2733God I hate this pretentious cynical attitude. You see one Japanese school girl in a game, suddenly it's all stereotypes. They didn't need to do it. Still kinda cool that they did, because it's better than simply dubbing the American characters. Hell, if we go by this boring, soulless logic, making L4D at all wasn't necessary. Another zombie game? Using character and setting tropes obviously inspired by film? Who asked for that, amirite?
As a Japanese L4D player, I was impressed by the Japanese dubbing of the original L4D characters! (around 12:54) I regret not actually playing it... Valve always does Japanese translations when they release games, and I hope that someday when they release L4D3, they will include Japanese dubbing. Sorry for the machine translation. Thanks for the interesting video.
Fat chances having l4d3, Plus their "successor" (Back 4 blood rest in piss) didn't have an good time either... And yes, I regret it too, but since the game felt too much EA with microtransactions, well now... I'm not so sorry for not testing it out.
@@Unerbroken Left 4 Dead 3 WAS in development at one point, but Source 2 wasn't at a point where it could handle their vision so they scrapped it. Now that the engine is actually done maybe it'll see a revival.
I don't know much Japanese but in 13:03 did Louis say "Francis said he isn't coming back" or "Francis said they(the new group)won't come back/make it".
that's stupidly scandalous that valve don't care about making third episodes of their game series but they still do nothing better than releasing exclusive games in japan
It's super weird hearing Louis speak japanese in a full conversation. These new weapons are so funny and the rpg skills remind me of the public steam group servers. I'm loving the mutation posters/banners, they're so over the top lol
I mean........if we put aside the entire "redub" thing it would kinda make sense for louis to talk in japanese because if I recalled correctly, he have some japanese speaking skills and were pointed out at some point in the game where francis asked him to say "hey, how do you say Bill is an idiot in japanese" and he did say the thing. Its kinda hilarious Edit: He did say the thing, its just that there's only two outcome which he directs it toward bill or francis and francis didnt even notice that it was directed towards him if he does
@@mrekozack7817 "He did say the thing" Well kinda, he did say someone was an idiot but it wasn't directed at Bill, he called Francis an idiot instead and Francis didn't catch on to it wich is pretty funny
I actually played this game when I visited Japan in Akihabara. This was in the Sega arcade before it shutdown. They had a few mouse and keyboards setup and multiple screens for multiple players to join. I really enjoyed the experience!
I didn't play it but I did mess around with controllers in one of the big SEGA arcades! It was so cool seeing it there along side all the other games. If I wasn't so addicted to arcade rythm games at that time I prob would of played it more haha
didn't realise how extensive the re-writing was. that's pretty cool! thanks for this! you have a really good presentation style. always happy to see this type of video from you
@@Deliveredmean42 I'm not sure if the VA actually speaks japanese, but the other comment might have been a joke cause there's a certain interaction between louis and Francis where apparently Louis canonically knows how to speak japanese
Pretty wild that they got Sakura Ayane for Haruka and Sawashiro Miyuki for Sara, those are some pretty big names. I also have memories of seeing cabinets of this in Kyoto on my first ever Japan trip in the autumn of 2017... along with a notice that they were going to be removed the following month.
I think both Sakura Ayane and Miyuki Sawashiro has done lots of VA work in niche products. If you look at their credits they often lend their voices to small Chinese gacha games They probably do it for a nice quick buck, which is pretty smart. Gotta take all the work you can get.
As you claim you aren't able to identify the guns lets list them by appearance in the video after you said that (Also not naming ones that are in normal L4D2) 9:52 The G36 9:59 The AN-94 10:33 The M1A (M14 variant) 10:40 The AA12 10:50 The L96A1 (Or as it is more commonly known for the more modern variant, the Artic Warfare. As iWinchi pointed out, that's an AK-12 prototype, hence the arcade cabinet calling it "The Prototype Rifle". That Thompson is the M1A1 variant. The Barrett is an M82A1. You also missed the WA2000 at 14:35 . Lastly, it's a Saiga-12. There are other firearms produced that go by Saiga, so stating Saiga-12 helps people understand that it's a 12-gauge shotgun.
@@darthalvarez2046 i just noticed there's a flashlight stamped onto the m82's barrel. I was trying to make sure it wasnt a Serbu BFG-50A as those cutouts looked rounder in some frames.
@@CturiX.IREALLY It could be an amalgamation. I know some game companies make "mashup guns" to avoid copyright infringement. Take RGG Studios for example, they have made a few amalgamation guns for the Yakuza game series and they look quite strange. However, the Anti-Material Rifle in Left 4 Dead Survivors has the muzzle brake of an M82/M82A1/M107, so it's safe to assume it's one of those variants.
Believe it or not, there _is_ precedence for a Japanese arcade game that just gives you a whole keyboard to use -- Typing of the Dead had an arcade cabinet with not one but _two_ full sized tenkey keyboards on it and it is just the silliest looking thing.
Another thing worth mentioning about the voice acting is that it seems they’ve not only adapted every line of dialogue but they even re-recorded a lot of the unused lines for base L4D2 like the death screams, laughing etc. Also it seems like they’ve left Sara without any laughing lines as she has none.

man, it's crazy to think about the effort that must have went into this game version, particularly with how out of date is was and how little it actually lasted. Great video
Supposedly; Yusuke Kudo was voiced by Ryuichi Kijima(Nick & Bill) Haruka Hirose by Ayane Sakura(Coach & Francis) Sara Kirishima by Miyuki Sawashiro(Rochelle & Zoey) Blake Jordan by Hidenori Takahashi(ellis & Louis) According to the fandom wiki*
I knew it sawashiro after repeating scene. it's funny because I thought valve are able to apply cooldown to voice on their game but I guess the voice over engineering done by japanese studio
A point of interest: The character models used in The Passing are normally based on whatever is set as the player model for L4D1 campaigns. That means if you have a mod that, for instance, turns Francis purple, Purple Francis will appear on the bridge. They must have done more than naive model replacement to get the arcade survivors into the L4D1 campaigns.
I didn't know that but are the models for L4D1 survivors on The Passing in this game were separate and copied files as Taito replaced all eight mains with the original characters exclusively on this game
It would be awesome to see these arcade-only assets ported to the base game so everyone can at least experience the characters/voice acting for themselves!
@@PunchyYT Oh yes, I did a cursory look at the workshop before posting this, but my search term didn't reveal many results except for one. Looks like most of them use L4DAC or L4D:AC in the names, now that I search that I see a bunch of stuff. That's awesome!
Came to be aware that the L4D2 JP edition existed thanks to the workshop addon page. Since then I became fascinated about how it came to be, what hardware it ran on, and how the assets were obtained. Thanks for the mini documentary.
In case anyone sees this, I was just perusing through the Survivors mods on the workshop and it seems several of the special infected had a ''Baby'' skin variant. According to one of the comments of these mods, the ''Baby'' Special Infected were literally just tiny. That also explains why the Tank in that Versus clip was so small, they were playing as a Baby Tank.
This was such an informative video! I went to Japan back in 2017 and played this machine whilst I was out there. I was confused of if it was just some L4D2 Workshop mod just slapped onto an arcade cabinet, so it's very interesting to learn the backstory behind the cabinet.
I imagine that all of this takes place in a universe where Coach, Rochelle, Ellis and Nick made it to the evac chopper in time, leaving a different survivor group behind.
0:14 But, I kid you not, one of the reasons I got hooked on watching vtubers when they were becoming popular was seeing Japanese people playing Western PC games, especially games that are on Steam since I was aware of how Steam, or PC gaming, isn't popular or well-known in Japan prior to that time. 8:09 Wild guess, but I think it's because it's an arcade game. They're gonna tone it down a bit since the machine could be seen by very young people. Though I'm not knowledgeable on how arcade places work in Japan so I couldn't say if it's correct.
I'll never understand why people like to watch 2D anime models or Vtubers as you people call them. They use this fake voice often high pitched like veibae and you can't see their reactions IRL. Mankind is doomed.
@@xPhantomxify you can say the same thing to many other things in life, too, like video games, and movies. Hell, I also will never ever be able to understand why people watch even normal streamers, or play games for more than 4 hours a day, or watch a movie in a cinema! But, since people have preferences and hobbies and whatnot, I say: just let them watch stuff like that, even if you'll never be able to comprehend why. Most of those people don't harm anyone else with those activities, nor do illegal activities, so why should we even care at all?
@@penebrook8330 Because it affects them negatively and it can affect their social/work life. These people get way too invested in their favourite VTuber/streamer, forming parasocial relationships with them. Then they spend hours on end in their Discord server, chatting with others similar to them and thinking they are their friends. They also hope to get the VTuber/streamers attention. Why watch and waste 4 hours(usually its more, like 8 hours) of your time watching how someone else plays a game, while earning money off of you and making you watch ads on top? Might as well play the game yourself...
@@xPhantomxify but that's another whole story, isn't it? besides, parasocial relationships can be formed even if the viewer is watching non-VTuber content (e.g: watching normal RU-vidrs, streamers, etc...), can't they? everything in life has a downside or two, or three, or even more, mate. For example: some video games cause gambling addiction! (looking at you, Overwatch, Genshin Impact, and CS:GO) and so on... So, it's better if people know how to practice good discipline when it comes to doing leisure activities (like playing video games and watching VTubers, or whatever) and when to stop, etc...
@@penebrook8330 Not to the same extent as livestreaming on Twitch. The Twitch streamers can talk directly to the viewers and interact with them. On RU-vid it's one-sided. No interaction. People watch a video then like it or dislike it and move on to the next. You're right though in the fact that moderation is key. Watching someone play a game for 4 or 8 hours straight is not good.
about the censorship: I seem to remember an article on House of the Dead (that had a uncensored version in some western versions, a censored one and a version there was an option for censorship) it's not that the arcade needs to be censored, but that uncensored games could not be visible by bystanders or something.
Just plain interesting. It gives me that feeling I've had for ages like I wish arcade culture continued on, but knowing full well modern business would make it extremely monetarily icky. Good video, dude.
9:09 Translated text: "When the time reaches zero, the "Mega Zombie Rush" will occur, in which a powerful army of zombies will attack, and escape will be hopeless!" Now that's quite a tip if I've ever seen one
I got to play this at the Galloping Ghost in Chicago recently, and this illuminated a lot that I didn't quite catch in my limited time with the game. I can read some Japanese, albeit slowly, so I was just catching bits and pieces. It seems their cabinet must have been imported while the game was still live, as it was stuck in Nesica offline mode and could only access the aforementioned two levels. If anyone has the knowhow to get that final patch and install it on their machine, reach out to the Galloping Ghost! I'm sure they'd be happy to upgrade.
They can literally download the dump from the Internet and write it to a new drive. The dumps online are (obviously) decrypted and will play just fine on a Type X3. Didn't know they have an actual cab there, pretty cool!
OH MY GOD I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO TALK ABOUT THIS I played it when I was in Akihabara back in 2015. Me and some teenagers got really far, I remember being so confused that you just chuck 300¥ into the PC but having a blast. Glad to know this wasn't a fever dream nor forgotten about
Thanks for the excellent video. Ever since the arcade files got dumped online, I've been hoping someone would figure out a way to add the arcade guns into the weapon pool, but so far the only mods are ones that outright replace existing weapons. Random fun fact: Left 4 Dead Arcade got referenced in the Umaru-chan manga, with a chapter where the title character and a couple of friends play an arcade game titled "Dead 3 Zombies".
You know, I played a Half Life 2 arcade machine in Japan around 2008 and the controls were wild. It looked like a flight simulator with a joystick, throttle, and 2 pedals. It was actually pretty fun!
Nice video! I never thought much of the arcade version of Left 4 Dead as everyone who talks about it in English just gives a very barebones explanation. There's a lot of really cool ideas and I wish I could've played it, especially the god difficulty and playing around with the customization. Thanks for making this video, it's very informative and really interesting.
There is an arcade in Chicago that has this game. It’s called Galloping Ghost Arcade. Id highly recommend. You pay to enter the place and all the games are free.
Woah that's insane, I had no idea this existed! What an absolute trip. I would've loved to give this a go at an actual arcade, but I don't know if it's worth trying to play at home when I can't read Japanese at all.
L4D2 Superfan here. This video was so much more in-depth than expected and you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber. Cannot wait for the Theatrythm video! Also; would you be willing to go through the nightmare of a Dissidia Arcade video?
Ah that Nesica bit finally helped me figure out how stuff like the Kantai Collection Arcade game and other games similar to that worked. That's pretty interesting.
I remember reading about this version online years ago and being really interested to see what it was all about. Great video! Brilliant look at this weird little bit of L4D history.
The green uniform riot cops are now in L4D2 after the Last Stand update. Speaking of L4D2, i'm surprised no one has tried to port some of this into the workshop. It would be right at home seeing almost everyone has a heavilly modded copy nowadays.
thank you *so much* for making this video, ive been extremely interested in the arcade ports of l4d and also counter strike, theres hardly any english resources to learn about them and i was so happy to see this show up on my home page.
This was a great video. I’m glad someone finally decided to make a definitive look at this version of L4D2 as I’ve seen other RU-vidrs discuss the JP arcade game but didn’t go into much more detail which was disappointing.
watched the whole video, I found it extremely fascinating, I really would love to have been able to see what the special zombies would have been like to play against and all those cosmetics and the boosts are really cool ideas.
God I miss arcades. What I would give to have a profitable arcade somehow. It’s such a relic of modern culture. To be able to pay to play games was such a formative thing for me and my friends growing up.
Arcades are still very much a big thing in Asia. If you see the living spaces of the population there, it makes sense why they can't own home consoles and dedicated PC gaming setups.
Wow this was really fascinating! I've heard about the Half Life arcade game a few times, but never knew there was a L4D one too! Thanks for the video! Also I love that they made an offline patch for the game so people could keep playing it. More companies need to do that instead of just pulling the plug outright...
I actually went to an Arcade bar last year and they had this game running. I had no idea the "wii nunchuck and razer mouse" was the actually product! I thought it was some sort of bootleg fix by the owner.
there's some genuinely interesting ideas on display here that scratch that old itch for a Left 4 Dead 3 like there is clearly room for some new L4D content even if it sucks. The idea of reverse charger (charges, grabs you and then runs backwards? Like a jockey but faster idk?) is just super interesting and I'd have loved to see those ideas on display
I'm surprised I don't see many people talking about this arcade game, yours is the first. Glad I had to watch the entire thing. Would like to see more gameplays on it.
I got this video recommended to me and I watched all of it wondering why this guys voice is so familiar. just now looking at the comments section I realized he is Punchy and I watched his Illbleed speedruns before on GDQ : ) Anyway well done and thanks for this video. i had no idea there was a arcade version!
9:20 I imagine the bright signposting is because it is hard to focus on map layout when you have a DDR game blaring in your right ear, and a racing game roaring in your left ear.
Ngl id love to see a fan made mod with theses survivors dubbed in English and then having a few new maps like 5 new ones name like idk "Bio Valley" "Dam-It" "Astro Corpse" "Chill Punk" and "Flesh Fried" uncommon infected and weapons and theses guys meeting both the l4d1 crew and the l4f2 crew aswell
It’s funny because I live in the UK and there is an arcade I usually go in with my friends from time to time when we go to the cinema next door. It has your typical arcade machines except it’s split into two areas, one that focuses on your typical quick ticket machines to win prizes and the other are more your arcade shooters and basketball games. One day I went in to the arcade alone, I don’t remember why I was on my own, I think I was with with my parents that day and they didn’t bother coming in. Anyway there was on game I really liked which was a walking dead arcade shooter and I always played it. Until one day it was removed but surprisingly it had this game in its place. I was so shocked to see a Japanese left for dead game in a public arcade and it was this exact same game you’re showing here. Literally just 4 PC’s lined up against a wall where the walking dead machine was. I remember telling my friends about it and remembered how it worked so vividly because it was so strange to me that a game I have hundreds of hours in the normal version, now has a Japanese version just sitting (and strangely unplayed) in my arcade. Obviously I played the game when I saw it and was weirded out by the mouse and nunchuck controls but still I was definitely playing it. And yeah it plays exactly like left for dead just censored and on a timer. The sad thing is, when I came back about 2 weeks later with my friends it had been removed with nothing in its place. I think it was there for all of one month before it was removed and I was so sad that I wouldn’t get the chance to play it again but still, I’m glad I got the chance to play it just once.
I was in Japan from 2013 to late 2017 and I remember seeing this in one of the SEGA owned arcades, like, only a handful of times (which is crazy since I used arcade hop in akihabara like almost every weekend. It seemed to not be very popular because everytime I walked around that area it was located, it was usually empty. Never played it, but I did hold the controllers to get a feel for it. Kinda regret not trying the real thing but hey, at least its still preserved! Also weird to hear my first name, Blake, being said in a L4D game and even more weird it being said with a japanese accent haha. Such a neat piece of video game history!
I personally want to more about these special names you mentioned in the video like calling the smoker the "licky licky man". I want to know more of these unique names as I enjoy the insight into what other people would call the special infected, it seems unlikely to me that everyone would unanimously agree and come to the decision that boomers are boomers. Much like how in TWD from Telltale you had "Walkers" and "Muertos". This stuff is flavor text eye candy to me.
Weren't there weird SI variants in the normal gameplay? I distinctly remember things like the "special SI" from 19:54 being part of the base game. That would also be why the tank in the Versus Survival clip is so small, there were mini tanks, mini boomers, lightspeed hunters, and all sorts of ridiculous infected variants that spawned throughout the levels. I also remember that each gun had versions that dealt more damage but had less ammo, or had more accuracy but dealt less damage.
they seemed to primarily appear during events and I ran into a lot of descriptions while researching but no Complete list nor specifics on spawning. They don't show up at all in Offline play I am pretty sure, having played the thing through multiple times now
The version of L4D Survivors I had seemed to be modified to spawn in the new SI variants, I have definitely encountered these different types of SI in game, albeit had a horrible tendency to crash after a few maps.
Hey Punchy about the zombies in green armor, that color is there because it was a missing zombie and valve never fixed it and theres been mods that force that zombie back into the game :)
I actually saw and played this arcade cabinet in the Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield, Illinois a few years ago when I went on vacation to Chicago. It was a very interesting experience.
In the USA Brookfield, Illinois there's a arcade called "Galloping ghost" they have this arcade there and I played it since im very much a fan of L4D series and running through it was very interesting because I never seen an arcade version.
yeah I didn't actually say who voiced who because that info is pretty easy to google but L4D Arcade actually got some pretty big names for its dub, Haruka is Sakura Ayane for instance
The 15 second player respawn is the weirdest thing. It would have made losing even on expert close to impossible. Very interesting video, thank you for making it.
shame that the only L4D arcade I found in the US was in Galloping Ghost, where it was blocked off by other arcade cabinets. They also have a Half Life Survivor cabinet there, though the smaller one without the big chair. Still had the pedals though.
I knew about this port for Japan but there were so many things I didn't know about it, content-wise like the new weapons they added or the mutations which are rather interesting. Man, you did a great job covering this not-well-known subject.
I played this game when I was in Japan on New Year’s Eve 2014/2015. It was the only game I could even slightly understand. I spent more money playing the arcade game than I spent on the pc version.
I had never heard of this before i saw your video. Wish God Mode Worked as it would be a fun experience to mess around with. Hopefully someone can also make the mimic event playable as even though it would be easy to tell who isn't real since multiplayer is hard to get working (abuses lan play and a hamachi like app) the idea sounds really neat.
It's possible that God Difficulty requires either a working server or a dump from a drive that was still in service after the network support ended. But since it sounds like the EOL patch that unlocked everything for offline was the final patch, God Difficulty may require the servers to be reverse engineered.
Oh, cool video. If anyone in the US is interested in trying this out in the arcade, I did play at a cabinet recently at Galloping Ghosts, an arcade in Illinois. The joystick was kind of in poor condition, and I didn't play long after confirming that it is pretty much just L4D2. But definitely a fun novelty to see that I'm sure some others here would enjoy playing. Though with this many comments someone else has probably already mentioned it, idk, worth bringing up just in case anyone finds this comment.
Glad this vid blew up. My first time watching your channel and it was a very interesting and thorough look at a weird release of a classic game. Subbed
