Left For Dead Ambitious Austin Ambassador Restoration - Two Weeks To Save This Rare British Motor!

This 1983 Austin Ambassador was the subject of my last resurrection video, I found a note in the car from the previous owner he'd left on the windscreen asking people to stop scratching it while it was parked outside his house awaiting a full restoration - that note got to me and I was sad to see that he was trying hard but was unable to get this thing back on the road where it should be.
I decided the car deserved a new lease of life and I could spare two weeks to transform it's fortunes and celebrate it's rarity and uniqueness, the restoration isn't a nut and bolt job but it's back on the road where it belongs, looking sharp and with a fresh 12 months MOT. The hard work is now done and it's time for a new enthusiast to take over, and love it like it's original owner did, 24 years ago.
Quick edit as people have been asking for artist and title of a couple of songs (in the future I will make sure I put them up at the start!)
26:18 Kylie Dailey - A Tether
1:15:31 Coma Svensson - Didn't Wake Up
1:40:06 The Eastern Plain Feat Nia Miles - Won't You Stay

Its crazy how some of us just love watching work being done on an old car. There’s something about something broken being fixed that touches the heart. I’m enjoying your work and effort in reviving this old English classic.

I totally understand why you decided to rescue this old girl And also how you got emotionally involved in doing more work to it than you initially intended I believe cars do have a soul and if you spend time and effort working to keep them on the road they respond by making you smile when they work again In July last year I replaced my leased van with an 22 year old volvo v70 2.5 petrol And within a week "VERA " got under my skin Gave her a full service new brake pads all round and a set of new tyres She went for her MOT in November last year and passed with no adviserys She had 174000 miles on her when I got her with a full service history plus all work done on her by volvo main dealer I'm now very protective of her and love driving her I'm loving the work your doing on this ambassador vandal Plas and enjoying the transformation

I’m totally breathless after watching this project in its entirety. I would have thrown the towel in the ring much earlier. I mean, I’ve been restoring horizontal Leyland diesel bus engines for quite a number of years which is something entirely different I know but doing all the fiddling and tinkering with the crappy ignition system you did on this poor old car is outright astonishing. The crappy aftermarket ignition probably the reason why this car was put aside. Hats off! Kind regards, Willem, from Hekelingen, Netherlands.

Alec Issigonis's hydro-lastic suspension was one of the most brilliant inventions of the British car industry. I remember my pal Norman taking us to the golf course in his brand new Austin Princess. The ride could only be described as a magic carpet ride and I was so impressed. No wonder you were impressed as well. The only other car which can compare on ride quality is a Citroen DS. British Leyland took a lot of stick from the press, over Red Robbo and the unions, but the quality of engineering was there as you've shown. A pity so few of these have survived. This one was a lucky one.

Firstly, well done for saving this old girl, whilst I've never been a fan of the Princess or Ambassador, this car was clearly in good saveable condition and no basket case by any means! It's lucky for her that you're a big softie ha, because she was no oil painting! Even if it wasn't viable for you to do a full on restoration you've still managed to buy it some time and hopeful an Ambassador lover will take it on and give it a loving home where he/she will give it shelter, feed it valve seat additive and take it for walks on a regular basis. You're spot on with that 8c temperature rise making a world of difference in being able to function, funny how we get so excited by these little pleasures, clearly a man who likes his Iron Brew! Or just a brew! Finally, I really liked the vocalist in the background music you chose, actually I liked all the background music you selected. I know it must already take a long time editing as these aren't short videos but would love it if you could include the musical pieces that you've used. Cheers mate! 😉👍🫖

Great job getting this forgotten classic back on the road Ben. However,it is a prime example of why i totally disagree with MOT exemption at 40 years old. Next year, this car could have just been got running by somebody else and driven on the road with all of it's potentially dangerous faults ! Doesn't bear thinking about. My classic BMW is 44 years old,but i still have it MOT'd every year for my peace of mind.

That's a good tip on painting the edges. I wish I'd known that when I did my respray, would have saved me breaking out the paint gun again after I rubbed through 🤣

Excellent video. Nice to see that you spend so much time and money in to the Ambassador to get it nice and on the road again. Keep up the good work 👌

Can I just say it was an absolute pleasure watching this and following the revival of this Ambassador. Nice long films...you don't have to watch all at once (although I did!!) and you get to follow it all with your infectious enthusiasm and wicked sense of humour; "depressing" the brake and clutch pedals had me laughing. I haven't got my hands dirty with any of BLs finest for a few years now, and man I really do miss it...especially crawling around in a drafty garage and trying to spray in near freezing conditions 😂😂 Loved the tunes too. Subscribed, and will be binge watching more stuff this evening. Cheers.

Very well spotted, also no rubbing strips! There's some in the huge spares cache though for the next owner to fit

Great video and a great restoration/renovation, some hard work gone into that car Ben, but we’ll done for getting it running and roadworthy, looked loads better by the time of the MOT pass. The Ambassador and the Princess were such unloved cars for a long time, most were scrapped, others were sold extremely cheap as nobody wanted them at one time. It’s good to see someone had the foresight to save that one though, thanks to your work it’s now a useable classic.

Nice one. Bring back the 80s etc. Also, plastic mirror replacement is good, because if someone clips it coming the other way, the plastic is less likely to break than actual glass.

Mine was that colour. Y reg. Drove it hard with no maintenance for nearly 2 years the poor thing. I was the only boy racer in Cornwall with an Austin Ambassador. R.I.P BRW238Y
