As a seasoned practitioner of witchcraft, I agree with almost everything you said and I thank you for seeing both sides of the coin. I no longer cling to a label "right hand vs left hand". I have abandoned the need to transcend the ego - I find that making peace with the ego is the shortest path towards so called enlightenment and this has changed my approach to my practice. Nowadays, I only engage in magick that will bring me tangible results right here and right now, it is okay to please the ego. Having said that, my classification of "right vs left" is that the right path seeks transcendence through external power (gods, deities, etc) and the left path seeks transcendence through self power. In this way, many so called left hand practitioners are, in my view, right hand practitioners as they choose to connect with demons, goetia, etc (still external power, like gods or angles, all the same). My only rule is: I do not work with external entities, period, all power must come from within. Thank you for this beautiful discussion.

@@rodgar3759 Hi Rodgar! I find that the physical body is indeed finite and we have a limited amount of energy that we can harness from the body (even astral body if finite, imho). I do believe there is a source of endless power in the universe, but I don't necessarily see it as an external entity, I see it as "an algorithm" that we can "understand" and make use of. I plan to work with the Goetia, but i also believe im on "the left hand path". Eventually i want to reach a point where i no longer need to summon others, because i will have learned their power (as much is possible in the physical). I want to summon them all oneday, and strike a deal in which they give me and a few others large amounts of power. I figure with all of them combined, they could essentially make a living god

I have worked with goetia myself, but ultimately, the "deal" won't make you a living god if you are relying on their workings to achieve and manifest things. You become a living god when you no longer need any entity to work for you because you make things happen with your own. True magick arises from within, just my two cents anyway.... The left and right hand paths while complimentary also have different roads. Many people believe the right hand path and left hand path lead to the same place but truly the only path that leads anywhere is the LHP it could be said the RHP goes around in circles chasing it's own tail, not that that is wrong just not for everyone i think. Some want to break cycles evolve and expand while others are more comfortable conforming or staying in the boundaries and limitations. One leads to merging then returning the other to breaking free and creating.

I don't know much about witchcraft. It's not my "thing" maybe because I fall too often under the Goddess's spell to pay attention to what She's telling me (lol). However, I'm in accord to everything you say about the LHP. Especially the "selfish" part. LHP attempts to empower the True Self part of us, not the surface, personality self we form in our lifetime. So, it presupposes that the Self-enhancing progress is perennial, because our max 100-120 life span is a "blink of an eye" in terms of trying to achieve self-deification. Which means that we have to strive along many lives for something which is the most difficult task we can ever undertake, imo. Either through the Hinduist procedure of reincarnation or some other way of personal consciousness transference and enrichment.
I've walked the left hand path for 30 years and it's primary goal is to obtain self deification, ie become a god. The right hand path it is the path to become one with the godhead however one defines it. Both are completely Noble and true.

to use D&D terms, i have always seen the right hand path as being "lawful" and the left hand path is "chaotic"... but RHP can be lawful good and use rules for the betterment of society, but it can also be lawful evil and use rules to abuse the community around them in their favor (and proclaim it is the right thing to do)... in contrast LHP can be chaotic good and say "fuck the law that says i can't feed the homeless, that guy is starving, i'm going to buy him dinner", or chaotic evil and kick puppies (and not care if it's the right thing to do or not). ...it is the RHP that says "if it is a sin or a crime to lie, then i will tell the truth when the nazis come for anne frank, and tell them where i've hidden her"... it is the LHP that values her life over the socio/religious laws that say lying is immoral. ...and i find such unwavering and thoughtless adherence to the law to be abhorrent to a civilized society. if a person cannot adapt, they will stagnate, and soon will be a relic of the past.

Well Said. The Right Path can def be just as selfish as the Left Path. Some folk can get very much wrapped up in their path, spirituality + spiritual ego + go on an extreme route sometimes when they're first starting out. As they mature + their knowledge develops they'll realize that the balance of all energies and directions helps ground them. They'll eventually reach their personal equilibrium or lean more towards a certain side.

But a left-hand path or a right hand path is restrictive that's why I prefer the middle I can do a lot my left-hand I can do a lot with my right hand I can do a lot more with both and it allows me to achieve a lot more by doing what interest me most at the time

you seem to be a lot better today and back on your usual form, good to see you again arith. one minor point, left hand path in modern witchcraft, there is a slight implication here that witchcraft may be connected with left hand magic inherently. i think that the truth may be slightly more complicated than that; magic can be used for both good and bad purposes, meaning that magic is more accurately described as grey rather than as right or left. witchcraft may be used for specific purposes according to the practitioner's inclinations which are not meant to follow any specific agenda either right or left. there is also the matter of magic having repercussions upon the caster, meaning that every magic should be aware of and responsible for their actions and the repercussions of their actions rather than simply existing within a void.

Hi Arith, I never really identified myself as part of a left-hand path, but when you describe it in those terms, I recognize several things I tell people when they ask why I am pagan or why I am a witch. If the ancients believed the left hand was associated with giving and the right hand taking, why is anything left associated with malevolence? Giving would seem benevolent and taking malevolent. You should research the Church of Satan. Satanists are just humanists and conservationists and are concerned with freedom, equality and intellectual knowledge. Most of us are atheists and don’t believe in an actual “Devil” or “Satan” character. We uphold the symbol of the Devil as a challenger to toxic, dominating and enslaving religions...specifically Christianity. Using the Devil for a symbolic figure is just a jab to challenge Christianity and it abusive, degrading and oppressive values. It’s an attention-getting device.

I often wondered why we have a tendency to think that helping the human community = “good” and helping yourself = “evil”. Personally I don’t think any of it is good or bad. But of course the community would say not helping the community is evil. Because the community won’t survive for very long if everyone was just helping themselves.
You could argue for very long what is the correct way. Some say that, by helping yourself and ensuring your own wellfare, you are helping, by extent, your community. OThers say you need to guarantee minimums or safe nets for the least lucky, cult or wealthy members of your community. I think all ways can work as long as the memebrs are not being selfish. If you help yourself by taking or restricting others, then thats bad
@@rodgar3759 I’d say that from a societal point of view it would be wrong to take from the other members of your society. However history has shown us(as well as modern times) that taking from people outside of your society is just fine if it benefits your own society. Animals act in that way too. So I’d say that the way of nature is to rape, pillage, kill and take from the other in order to benefit your own. But if we as individuals try to do that on our own then it is frowned upon by our particular society and is seen as evil. But if societies or tribes do it to other societies and tribes, then it’s fine. But nature don’t seem to care. It just takes as much as it gives. So I suppose if you want to live close to nature then take what you can, when you can, for as long as you can, until it is taken from you eventually... It is the Kali Yuga after all.

Nature does have a violent approach, that's true, but we, as beings capable of reasoning, can and should, respect other beings capable of that. Animals may understand when you kill one of their own, maybe they generated atachments even. But they won't hate you for that, or blame you. Many times they just carry on with their lives. Some animals do understand a bit more: crows are known for having an incredible intelect, holding grudges and goodwill towards some people. So then only feed from lesser animals and respect those capable of "understanding" That brings us to human. We understand almost everything, and not only that, we get sad, angry and nostalgic with loss. So if you know you are causing those feelings, why do it willingly? History has taught us that taking form anyone just brings more problems. It may be liked by members of your own society, but you are generating hate that WILL come back to bite you. Even taking too much from nature has horrible consecuences: change a river you can even dry it. Cut too much trees, the wind will erode everything, kill predators, wild life goes crazy, etc...

I am however completely aware of the fact that everything I have in my life, all of the modern conveniences, and safety comes from the fact that someone one else or some other group in the past and even right now had to suffer so I can have them. I am also aware of the fact that I wouldn’t change places with them for even a second and would fight and even kill to protect my loved ones to maintain what I have for as long as I have it. Even though I have personally done no violence nor harm directly to anyone, violence has been done in the past in order for my tribe to have what it has and will continue to do violence in the future to maintain it for as long as it can. And I am ok with that. I have seen my shadow and am aware of my potential to do terrible things if necessary. Even as I am also aware that everyone else is also capable of such the same. Either way I am unfortunately a product of my nature. And I accept it. Under peaceful circumstances I would do my best to live a nonviolent existence and outsource the violence to someone else. Like we currently do. But if we ever end up in another dark ages, I would succumb to my true animal nature just like everyone else. That is if I live past the first week of the shit hitting the fan. Which would probably be unlikely since I’m older now and have lived a quiet comfortable life my entire life. So it will be the young who have to bare that burden.

The left hand path is counter productive in many many ways and usually is just a round about way to a personal breaking point that leads to a right hand path. The right hand path and left hand path are both usually left hand paths in essence. If you are working towards a goal of becoming better its left. Both just polar oscillations that lead away from the goal in the center. But that is what all of this new age stuff is. Playing in the imagination to avoid what's real.

Left hand path is also a expression used in asian religion to describe religious practices including magic and esoteric practices, also called tantra. When I make a comparison with todays paganism, we find similar practices : invocation of divinities, use of symboles having a hidden meaning, visualisation... Maybe for many the definition is not clear, and we use "left hand path" for "dark magic", while it is not the same.
Ive found great success in my narrow (balanced) oft meandering (mindful of each moment) path, I recognize the divine can be perceived in all things as all things are from some perspective likely to be inherantly divine. I, among others I hope, would be inclined to know your thoughts on Greater and Lesser magical applications. As an example, in many Left Hand Path traditions there are the phrases of Greater Black Magic (GBM) and Lesser Black Magic (LBM), as a means of practice application. You gave a very good insight into the idea of the left hand path. For me the development of the self without any authority outside means to take full responsibility for your own deeds and your own system of values. You cannot put the blame on others or pray for help. You take care of your surrounding, the world around you, plants, animals, people and you interact directly with them for the joy of life, love and kindness. This reality is not a place to escape from to go to paradise or to dissolve your individuality to feel free. This reality wants us to experience it joyfully with all our sense here and now and be happy and free by doing so. In this way we feel so good and thankful that we do good things to others. And we do anything to serve this great universe around us.

I have always felt fluidly towards magic, I have always wanted to know what was on both sides and never had fear of looking in the dark. I was in a class recently where someone refused to look at the "reversed" side of something because they were worried about "negativity" and it just makes no sense to me how a person can see if they only choose to see half of a possibility. It has never made sense to me. Fear is the adversary, not the dark.
