In a start full of action, the Volvo Ocean 65 fleet burst out of Alicante bound for Lisbon - with Dongfeng leading the boats out of Spain. Next stop? Portugal. Watch the full replay of the day's coverage.
Caudrelier's driving was impeccable. He's baiting Vestas into a cover on the entire downwind and knows he can set that jib's luff on a nice luff/fill pump as the apparent wind changes as he surfs each wave. Gorgeous
What amazing diversity! Great to see the sailing community bringing ppl together in the spirit of healthy competition, pursuit of excellence and saving the planet! ekuse 🤠
Glad you appreciate our efforts, Mark! Ocean health is super important for this generation and all the generations to come after us! We really do need to act now! 🐬⛵️🌏
Great to see another edition of the Volvo Ocean Race begin. I wish that the organization could find commentators who are knowledgeable about sailing and able to explain concepts like dagger boards, leeway, canting keels, and such. There was some attempt at covering those subjects, but I felt that the explanations were not done well. For instance, while discussing the dagger boards there was hardly any mention of their use in reducing leeway. I sure hope that Team Brunel does well this time, as Bowe Becking really deserves a win. He would be a good commentator, I think, as he is fluent in English, speaks well, and has more experience in the race than anyone else.
The commentators are very knowledgeable...perhaps too knowledgeable, to the point they gloss over certain things that, to them, are old hat. To the layman though, we're not as familiar with some of the terms. You could always take it upon yourself to brush up on your sailing lingo, to better follow along. I do agree that some effort could be made on behalf of the production team, but some responsibility also falls on the spectator. We don't want this like other sports, where commentators are constantly explaining what a Gibe is, for the "new guy" in the audience. My recommenfationto the volvo ocean team would be to make a series of short videos, the ABCs of offshore sailing. Cover basic terms, techniques, strategies, etc. Redbull has a similar video serious regarding WRC, and it's a good intro point for people new to the sport.
Great coverage - enjoyed it live (well, 40 second lag) and now watching it again without the glare. Been tracking the teams every day (and night) live on the interactive map www.volvooceanrace.com/en/dashboard.html
Do they get banned from the marina for going like hell dodging boats? That was the most insane race lines I have ever seen! I think they should have swords in case someone tries to board!
Michael Dreksler I tried the website, it said love but at 7pm was still "streaming" no further than 30 minutes in. At least it's here now. Great sailing and, like 3 years ago, I won't be missing a minute of the broadcasts.
Yes folks, gather around, because once again the circus is in town...... I love sailing, but this is such a stupid commercial game. Remember Frank Zappa ??? "" We're only in it for the money "" Haha. Nevertheless, it will bring some astonishing ocean footage !! So.....enjoy....I guess.....
Toughest sport? Toughest race? Seen how fat and out of shape some of them are - 1:56:59for instance!! Have you guys ever watched sports like cycling - Tour de France perhaps? It's a bit of a spectacle sure and yes it can be a bit tough at times but it sounds like the truth is getting bent out of shape in the commentary.
That's a load of horse shit! Women were not denied participation because of a "lack of Volvo experience" as you say at 13:03. They were denied participation because women are not as strong nor do they have the endurance of a man........ And who is at "fault" for that?? YES the blame lands squarely on Volvo Ocean Race's decision makers by continually reducing the number of crew allowed. When you're only allowed a very small crew (less than you SHOULD HAVE) you absolutely must have every single one of them be the strongest, smartest and have the highest endurance you can possibly find. And that unfortunately excludes women by comparison. And at 11:53 you say "its been embraced by all the teems"?!?!? Again a bold faced lie. It was ramrodded down their throats. They didn't have any choice in the matter. Just as they had no choice when you brainiac's decided to turn this into a "spec" class race. "OH the developmental cost is too high" "By limiting cost out lay we will increase participation" "By switching to a one boat design we will have more teams"............. Yeah? How's that working out for ya?? If the rules hadn't been changed to put men at a huge disadvantage, there would have been less teams this year than the last open class race 11-12............. Terrible job this year too. By setting the crew allotments you are saying women are only worth just over 1/2 of a man........ (7 male crew VS 11 female crew..........) When one of the greatest sporting events in HUMAN history is ruined by Political Correct culture is a VERY sad day indeed.
They won't be happy until at least one third of the crew identifies as trans, binary or some other made up gender. There is no safe space left for Men. If they wanted women in this sport, they should have had a second race. Oh, wait, the ladies couldn't do 6 months all alone? Then maybe this isn't the sport for them.
Is the race concept its self awesome?? YES absolutely! Its the best race humanity has ever come up with. Is it awesome the way its being run right now?? FUCK NO!!
I've been trying to overlook the progressive authoritarian radical left Pc agenda, but at tough when they're constantly ramming it down our throats. Accepted by all? Bullshit. Bremen and Skallywag didn't want women on board, and for legit reasons. If I'm a skipper, and I have to pick the 7 best sailors for my crew, I pick the 7 best, regardless of sex. Even if I'm a female captain, I'm picking 7 best for my crew, regardless of sex. Furthermore, these rules will prevent an all female crew from ever winning...guess they'll never reach the level of man lol ;). Where does this stop? Every crew needs to be 1/3 non-binary? Does every crew need a person who self identifies as a duck? Women can sail, they can sail their asses off. But if we want a fair competition, on even ground, with no special concessions given to a certain group of people, it's time for women to step up, and compete on the same level as women, without special rules just for them. Mandatory dovertsity will only do more to push bias and prejudice, and will foster an environment where 1/2 the competitors don't need to try as hard, as their spot on the boat is gaurenteed:
albinorhino6 your comments sure sounds educated, but are otherwise. Number one, this is a commercial enterprise, don't like it go away, start your own race. Number two, it's a sailing competition, we optimize against the rules. The rules. Not your male centric utopian ideal. If they want to set up the rules to include women, good. Yes it's "forced" but so what? There's Olympic mixed gender sailing, tennis, etc and other sports. We don't call those "forced". Mixing is good. Only the assholes think it's bad and produces your bias and prejudice. You cry babies who tout male dominance, seem to be the weakest people around.
MARCO +++ Whitbread were adventurers, the love of sailing and it included women without any rules. The Volvo is a commercial moloch, just as the America's cup or other regattas, hijacked by big business. The new rules are just marketing and to install political correctness. There's even a "mandatory sleep period"-rule. I dont know who came up with this nonsense but he can't be a sailor. As an amateur sailor, you could do a whitbread. Now you have to be a professional who gets paid, same boats, same sailmaker, same equipment brand, crew rules, gender rules, sleeping rules. So much for fairness and sport. Communism on water.
Your comments make you look like a inbred racist moron, any of these women in this race could likely take you out with once punch. Go back to your cave, man. Don't like it? Don't watch. Take your stupidity and misplaced neostalgia with you.
I understand and respect what you say, but times have changed and good old times are not coming back, moments in History were correct at the time, but things evolve rather without our control. Keep well.
I don't know why the sheeting, sails, and rudder can't be automated and the crew replaced with sandbags on lines to be winched from side to side, or even why they are still there with swinging ballast, stupid, unnecessarily labor-intensive way to sail about otherwise, but i guess idiots need to put on a show, so they have something to slur about at the yacht club. A tiny circuit board with a few gyros and a couple stepper motors or servos can fly a plane or balance a Segway scooter, and have for some years now, so the excessive size and crewing of sailboats coupled with tons of carbon fiber is some weird version of inbred.
