Leg cramps can be caused by several things, from the common and easily fixed at home, to the rare and dangerous, that you need your doctors help with. This video explains the most common causes of muscle cramps, especially in the legs, what causes them, and what you can do to address them.
Just because you have leg cramps doesn't mean you need to take a prescription medication, or even an over the counter supplement, it can often mean you are not getting the proper minerals in your diet, and this is fixable. Use this knowledge to help yourself and your family and friends. Muscle cramps suck, but you can fix them.

I take lithium carbonate, which can cause electrolyte disturbances, and I had trouble with muscle cramps when I first started it. I also found out that I was lactose intolerant around the same time, and my sodium and potassium were low, so, my doctor recommended drinking three servings of almond milk every day, as almonds are naturally really rich in sodium and potassium, as well as calcium. Lo and behold my leg cramps disappeared.

I would have daily body cramps and uncontrolled muscle twitches, but the worst were the upper inner thigh leg cramps. They were so painful that even after they subsided the muscle would feel weak and sore for a few days after. I couldnt exercise or do normal movements without cramping. Doctors checked all my vitamin levels and they were all normal. This was disappointing because I was hoping I had a mineral deficiency but test results showed all mineral levels were good. Dr. said I had "restless leg" and prescribed medication. He didnt really explain why I was having whole body cramps and not just legs altho legs were the worst. The prescription did nothing!!. One day while during a work meeting I had a trademark upper thigh cramp and had to get up in front of everyone and walk back and forth in the room in pain until cramp finally subsided. I was beyond embarrassed but was hurting to bad to care. One of my coworkers showed great compassion and told me something that has changed my life!. She told me to drink 1 to 2 tablespoons of raw unfiltered apple cider vinger with the mother diluted in 6 to 8 oz of water when I get up in the morning and the same thing an hour before bed. I smiled dismissively but got to thinking ive tried everything else. I did research on apple cider vinger with the mothers and decided to try it. I have been taking it for a month and have not had a SINGLE cramp at all since!!. Im not trying to sell anybody anything im just sharing what has brought me relief.

Dr. Berry, l know that you are a strong believer in the no carb, Carnivore diet. But my concern is that the brain needs carbs in order to function & produce DOPAMINE. Without this fuel, the brain cannot function! A member of my family decided to loose some weight, so she restricted her carbs for 2 yrs. She developed PARKINSON DISEASE!! Even tho we put her on the synthetic DOPAMINE, L-DOPA, she quickly deteriorated & died. This is a MAJOR red flag for this Carnivore, NO CARB diet!!....

(Do not put the salt inside your water glass) I also use Celtic Sea salt on my food too. See Barbara O'Neills video Salt & Water to see why eating the salt like that works so well and what it actually does with magnesium and potassium in your body. THANK YOU SO MUCH DR. I'm so grateful that you have addressed leg cramps, Dr. Berry. I had taken Cipro time after time, and hated the side effects. I asked a prescribing doctor if she thought it was a good medicine, and she said Yes. Then I asked her what she meant by a good medicine. She said it did what it was supposed to do, and she laughed. No knowledge, no concern that my legs were being tortured. Years later, now, I still have Charlie horses so bad, I have actually called 911 over this. To be fair, I am also a type 2 diabetic. But I am convinced that the Ciprofloxacin is huge in my suffering. Because the pain comes at night... sometimes I do not go to bed. I sleep with a couple of bars of high magnesium soap at the foot of the bed between the sheets. I do not tuck in the sheets or blankets. I cannot have my weighted blanket cover my feet while I am in bed. I have a footstool under my legs and feet when I am at my desk. And yes, I do sip dill pickle juice at times. These tips I learned from qualified medical personnel, and they do help me. For anyone reading this, I hope my experiences can help you. Again: Thank You, Dr. Berry !

talking to a doctor about these things is a great idea, but in my experience, most will dismiss patients who go to them with specific concerns and possible tests they need. If the doctor thinks it is their idea, then it's ok. But when it comes from the patient, it is automatically wrong.

Agreed. My doctor moved out of town this year but I had gone to him for several years and although we would laugh and joke and talk about family, etc, there were times were medically I feel like he just brushed me off or basically used the "wait long enough and it will go away" method. He would do blood work and tell me that everything looks good. I understand he may be hamstrung by insurance and the medical group he's a part of as well but as a patient I sometimes wonder if my body is sending out signals that are being ignored.

Two nights ago the cramps attacked both of my legs and I just barely was able ro get out of bed and walk. I kept two 12 ounce glasses of water in my room, drank them and Incredibly in less than 10 minutes, the cramps went away but not the memory of the excruciating pain. I'm not a skeptic anymore.

Thank you for the prevention advice. I'm 66 yrs and never had leg cramps and have loved walking and was also a naturally swift walker without need for exertion. A couple of injuries over the years have caught up to my knees now. I have to walk more carefully so as not to get sharp knee pain. My calves are rock hard due to bearing the strain and I get regular horrendous cramping there and thigh high too...usually at night. Magnesium tablets help but also, just as a tip to others who feel they have nothing to hand to immediately help...a hot water bottle or a hot shower directed onto the area helps quite fast. I also have one of those plastic shower heads with a flexible tube that fits over a bath tap for more direct targeting of the cramp area. Sometimes I am not even able to undress without causing more pain so I just get under the shower fully dressed! When cramping up I just don't care! The family can tell by the uncontrollable swearing emitted from this elderly lady leaping out of bed and dragging feet, stiff zombie style along the passage to the bathroom.

You lucked out finding a competent doctor at the ER. The majority of MDs are incompetent or they ignore the test results and lie and say they can't find anything or everything is "normal" and pass the buck by telling you to follow up with your blah blah blah because they know your regular doctor will just refer to another corrupt doctor during the day and if it's at night just refer you right back to the ER. The old ping pong game. It's how the corrupt jackasses keep the money pipeline flowing. Better count your blessings that you found a doctor that actually did what was in the best interest of the patient which is a rarity in the united states. I wish you a Godspeed.

In 2015 I had the same exact thing as you. Blood clot in my leg and both lungs also I was so anemic when admitted to the hospital that I almost needed a blood transfusion. It turns out the anemia was caused by a severe gluten allergy. No gluten since iron levels are normal every time

I was so glad to hear you say Cipro causes leg cramps. My doctor said there was no way that's what caused the pain and swelling in the back of my knees and the severe cramps in my feet and legs. I knew that was it! I wound up in the hospital with severely depleted potassium.

Can’t trust many those Doctors So many people have problems when they take Cipro & Doctors know it! After a family member took Cipro, often he had terrible pain in his legs that he couldn’t even walk. We had no clue it might be from the Cipro until we saw videos online people talking about similar things happened to them after taking Cipro

Thank you for this video. I recently suffered severe cramping in the night. I couldn’t even move my legs without extreme cramping. I would have to get up and walk around in the middle of the night until they subside. I was out walking one day when for whatever reason I felt dehydrated, I was near a store. So I went in and bought a bottle of Gatorade.. I noticed there wasn’t any cramping that night. Every night before bed I drink 6 to 8 ounces of Gatorade and cramps are gone.

Can you make a drink for yourself that is like Gatorade without the sugar, with just the electrolytes in it? Just a suggestion. It would be probably cheaper, and better for you without the sugar and artificial stuff in it. 🙏

I was surprised and glad to see you hit on this topic Dr. Berry, I have nocturnal leg cramps. Painful, agonizing, close-to-bringing-tears-to-my-eyes type of cramps. It happens sporadically. I suffered a bout recently but prior to that it had to be a year the last time it happened. The cramps can occur anywhere on my legs: quads, hammy's, and calves. Either leg. Sometimes both. My feet thankfully do not cramp. Can anyone else relate to this?

I began to get severe muscle spasms in my thighs twenty five years ago. They left me bruised and with residual pain for about three days after the episode. If I was walking I would be stopped in my tracks. The spasm could last up to half an hour. I told my doctor and he put me on quinine. It saved my life. But then I was told they could cause heart problems. I could not give them up because of my terror of the cramps. I started taking them every three days and kept tonic water on hand. As I got older the cramps became bored with just being in my thighs and started attacking me across my chest, they would contort my feet and just to be sure that I couldn’t relax I started getting claudication in the back of my upper leg when I tried to go for a walk. It usually happened going up a hill. I learned in have severe spinal stenosis. The neurologist seems very reluctant to operate as the space in my spinal column is 4cm. I cannot live with this kind of pain much longer. It is relentless!

I was given statins in my 70's for high cholesterol. In a few months, my legs would ache with extreme fatigue as I walked. In time, I could only walk about 30 steps before I had to stop and rest. This went on for several Dr. prescribed years. I had gained 55 lbs, too. Against Dr's orders, I stopped taking the statin. It took a few months, but I began being able to walk without extreme leg fatigue again. In following months, I had lost that 55 lbs the statin had put on me.

Fascinated by your vid on leg cramp. Ultimately, I still think it is something you are 'prone' due to hereditary, and I don't recognise any of the 'suspect' drugs you mention as applying to myself. I suffer terribly and finally got help from my doctor - quinine sulphate, which I take regularly at night. Wonderful! And not enough salt!! Whoa! I never eat salt except for a packet of crisps in the evening. I shall definitely increase my intake. I am convinced that cramp is familial - My mother suffered dreadfully. I still get cramp on occasion however, especially when I have been lifting and carrying at work and am tired. Oh god, it's awful when it does strike and I even get cramp in my thigh muscles and in the abs below the breast area. My mother used to tell me when leg cramp struck, find a cold floor and get the leg down, immediately! Always worked, but one just can't find a cold floor these days!

I was started on cholesterol medication about 6 years ago (first Zocor and recently switched to Crestor because they said it was better for you), because they said I needed to, my levels were only slightly over the normal range. Thinking back on it I think my leg cramps have gotten worse since then. Also I have pretty much eliminated salt from my diet because of it being BAD for us. I am going to try some of the things you suggested, my overall health is good, no BP problems, no diabeties or heart issues. Thank you for the information and they honesty, we need more of that.

For others it may help to measure each leg to watch if there loosing muscle . Its a sign of the nerves not passing signals down one side and can be due to a pinched lumbar .
