Balaji Srinivasan is an entrepreneur and essayist, he was co-founder of Counsyl, former chief technology officer of Coinbase and former general partner at Andreessen Horowitz.
Our information diets are making us mentally fat. Whether it's fake news, mis or disinformation, state propaganda or conspiracy theories, the world is very difficult to navigate. Balaji also wants to start a new type of country, he has views on how to optimise your working day and he generates more new ideas than almost anyone. Today we get an insight into his thought process behind all of this.
Expect to learn why socialism always continues to arise across the world, how Balaji tracks all of the ideas he has in his head, why Singapore is a powerhouse of a new country, how immigration will deal with remote VR workers in India, why everyone should use a dashboard to track what's going on in their life, the key trick that the legacy media uses to manipulate you and much more...

23:33 - this may be the most important thing everyone should listen to. I am convinced that much of people's mental health issues, from depression to anxiety to feeling helpless and hopeless, has to do with the junk we fill our minds with starting the moment we wake up. People 100 years ago didn't have this much information flowing into their heads in a single week, yet we do it in less than an hour. I was born in 1980; the total exposure we had to the news was our morning paper + 30 minutes of local news in the evening (including commercials, weather and local sports) + 30 minutes of World News with Peter Jennings (also including commercials). Today, news, social media and entertainment are now practically hooked like an IV drug into our brains. No wonder we're all feeling so overwhelmed. We don't know how to think anymore, and we're depriving ourselves of much-needed quiet in our head space. People have been saying it for years. But put down the phone, turn off the tv, go outside and breathe. Think real thoughts. We're letting ourselves be turned into zombies, then wonder why we are so unhealthy.

Balaji is brilliant when it comes to spotting tech trends. Not geopolitics. He is out of his wheelhouse. I love the idea of the Network State. That said, regarding China, they simply have way too many Achilles heels. Geography is destiny. The future will be some amalgamation of these two forces. At least for the next 20-40 years. There are simply no models that can predict what’s next. I would love to see a conversation between Balaji and Zeihan. Like a 4-6 hr podcast!

Overall an interesting conversation, there are too many moving pieces to actually make predictions beyond a couple of years, but people who are able to make prognostications have a value that should be listened to and heeded, but before you set you're feet in the ground, look far and wide, use your mental skills in a discerning manner and be careful when you take that next step. Even the brightest minds on the planet have blind spots. Thank you both for a very insightful conversation Balaji and Chris.

I always enjoy listening to him but I am not sure how much history he has studied. All of this has happened before. Printing press, internet, fiat money, etc. These breakdowns can take hundreds of years. As far as his opinion on Ziehan, he is missing natural resources and demographics. China has very little of both. To think America can have kinetic civil war without the entire globe being drawn into utter dispare is not smart. What network are you going to have. There will be no satellites, less oil and natural gas, and no defender of anything. American civil war would be global and total. The real worry is if Americans get together and tell the rest of the world to enjoy taking care of your own country. Look at the borders of India. You believe a distracted America will not have these other countries at each other’s throats. Read the history of those areas.

Balaji is a unique thinker & has been very successful in tech. However, his statements re geopolitics reflects that his understanding of governance, ideology, & nation states is shallow. The biggest ex of this is placing Tech as part his 'cloud' paradigm wherein they are for decentralization & 'nationalists' as part of statist 'woke' institutions. The geopolitical reality in the 🇺🇸 & Europe is that Tech is fully aligned w/the statist gov institutions & Tech has fully embraced the 'Woke' narrative. It is the 'nationalists' who are fighting against 'Wokeism' & recapturing gov institutions from leftist 'woke' mandarins. Balaji talked a lot on Twitter abt reforming California via Technocracy but rarely acknowledged that his fellow Techies were fully supporting the dysfunctional uniparty rule by the hard leftist Democratic Party. California is on its way to become a defacto Neofeudal society with 100% support of the Tech sector & its employees. He seemed to ignore how gov institutions worked & how captured they've become. Another is in his description of Singapore. LKY was a genius in creating Singapore, however, he was honest that its creation AND maintenance required a reduction of its citizen's civil rights & freedoms compared to those of Europe & particularly the 🇺🇸. Ex. Public housing is available for citizens & legal residents but strict quotas of ethnic/racial makeup within each housing block is part of the deal; illicit drug is punished severely & people returning from abroad are subject to drug tests; quality of life (littering, etc.) violations are heavily fined or punished. This w/d never be acceptable to most Westerners.

I would humbly submit that feudalism is actually the easiest way to put yourself at the head of a mob, as you inherit the mob that was built for you to inherit. Political families tend to accrue power regardless of the "ism" and this leads inevitably to a feudalistic regime.

Well feudalism is inherently competitive and decentralized, many little lands fighting for power, economically, militarily and politically. Free men can just go to the best rulers and even serfs had a lot more rights and freedoms than most people think. Local leaders that have the most relevance for your life can be much more easily influenced or overthrown. The top down rulers like emperors and kings have a lot less influence on your life. While in socialism everything is decided top down in an extremely inefficient way and you have no way to escape or not comply. If you rebel the entire country will be mobilized to crush you. While under feudalism a rebellion is very welcome if it intends to get rid of an incompetent ruler. Then there is competition between family members. And the institutional knowledge how to effectively rule is passed down and expanded on every generation. While in socialism posts will be given through cronyism/corruption, most likely to someone who has no idea how to effectively rule. Kingdoms can copy each others success strategies, while under socialism everything is decided top down and must be followed to the T. I could go on forever, but you get the gist. Feudalism is much better than socialism, quality of life is better, rulers are more competent etc etc. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is, I think you are wrong. All in all Feudalism is vastly superior to socialism in almost every way.

Contracts are as good as the enforcement of laws. Why do you think drug dealers use violence to handle bad deals? What possible institutions will enforce that transactions/contracts/etc will be honored in this international cloud setting? If the point is to sever ties w/gov institutions who will be muscle? Expecting all people to behave in an honest manner reveals that someone hasn't truly understood human nature.

I find it funny how people in the ''Professional World'' tend to have very shallow understanding about many topics, mostly as they think there unrelated to ''There World'' and even within the thinking they know quite a lot about, the stream of info is Very Narrow and directional, good for a simple goal, not so good for New ideas or evolving goals, No problem! New Ideas have little to No value in the System, as there is no Culture of improvement, rather one of maintaining the same old Idea's/Goals. New Technology is mainly used to enforce or prop up outdated old Idea's that don't work well, people in Business Don't ask themselves, how can we improve, they ask how can we make it more profitable and Complicated, it's now not even about goals so much as it's about building roads that all lead back to the start of the road, it's a race to the start or the known, not to the start of the unknown. One must Cultivate one's own garden. relying on a system of Billions of self-interested myopic halfwits and midwits will only ever lead back to the same old road that got us here.

I feel like Balaji honestly presents himself as a more self-actualised version of myself. I connect with a lot of his ideas, but it can oft be hard to implement and apply. For example, I totally believe in what he's saying about social media sites pulling us in different directions that don't follow a "serve one master" approach. The exception to this is Reddit, which I can strictly treat as a marketplace of ideas. In that case, I simply shop for the ideas that I can consume to further my goal of being on Reddit (when mostly involves crypto communities for investments/services I hold/use). This will be a fun interview to complete, and I'll def need to take some notes!

Totally feel the same way! It's like the quote "wisdom is applied knowledge." I've been on a search for 4 years of self improvement, ultimately aiming at the self-actualization, and Balaji is certainly the real deal. I've got years of bad habits I'm chipping away at myself but I'm making progress. Godspeed Adam!
