There’s always been something charming about Blood Omen 1. Maybe it’s just Kain’s personality, or the constant upgrades, or the atmosphere, or how you could break the game (seriously. Nobody talks about how 2 energy banks+soul reaver instantly kills all bosses). Regardless, I always think of it as more fun than the block puzzles of Soul Reaver or the linearity of BO2. Indeed, this is a game I would regularly keep an eye out for an official re-release. Thanks GoG!

Yeah...the confusing story towards the end is probably the most important and coolest part that ties in with the later instalments of the franchise, on its own though, I can see why someone would think it's shit

Great video! I remember renting this game at Blockbuster back in the day and being blown away by the voice acting and dark story. It felt pretty cutting edge at the time.

Kain getting involved in a war have nothing to do with him??? badly told confusing fantasy story? DUde did you even pay attention to the story at all?

I saw the abandonware discussion element and was expecting this to get it all wrong but this is actually a pretty good summary of both the situation surrounding the development of the game and the situation surrounding the ethics/legality of piracy and so called 'abandonware'. Only thing I might add - and I'm not sure if it even needs to be said considering you've obviously seen the legal documents - but CD's transition to dev was something they'd planned to do but the change itself was allegedly triggered by SK not delivering on time, meaning CD had to get devs in to help and once they'd hit the point of no return they couldn't turn back. That meant they couldn't completely fulfil their publishing obligations and hence why Activision got involved in the first place. Great video though :D

I'm pretty sure I beat this game twice on PSX way back in the day, and I have absolutely no idea how. I mean I love the game but I must've had the patience of a saint. The story is pretty good but there are definitely some confusing parts near the end because of the time travel. It certainly still makes sense though.

0:22 - No, that was not a revival of the series. That was beating a dead horse. 0:36 - "Fans bitching so much". This is untrue, and also uncalled for. At no point did Square Enix care for the fans nor did they use any metrics to determine potential engagement. Initial reports did show that interest for a single-player game was high, however. Emergence of an arena was getting pennies on the dollar before project got closed forever. Someone in their management team believed that this was a good idea, however LoK was too much of a bite for an easy cash grab so naturally fans fought back. Initial predictions were two years of sustenance before they pull the plug. Some suckers paid cash for cosmetics and legacy bundles ranging up to $200 at the time. Other suckers believed that they will work with Square Enix, which was terribly misguided ambition coated in ignorance around the multiplayer PC gaming trends of the time. "It's still in the beta" is a classic misguided gatekeeping for an unfinished, sub-par product.

I'm all for playing games on original hardware, but in this case the load times on the PS1 are damn near impossible to stomach. This game still holds-up thanks to its Zelda-esque gameplay though, and still stands-out thanks to its bleak atmosphere and fucked-up imagery. Kain's also a pretty ruthless and coldhearted protagonist for a video game, even by today's standards, putting most "antiheroes" to shame.

Anyone having problems getting this to work on an emulator? Mine just has a black screen after the psx logo
