Thank you so much for this video. It answers literally every question I had about how to jump into this series. Brilliant.

I love that you recommend playing the original first. It's so overlooked because the graphics look simplistic and there is already a faithful remake but it still offers just as much as it did when it released on the PS1. It has so much great ambience and it sucks you into the game really quickly. And for someone like me who loves replaying these classics alternating between the original and the remake keeps it fresh because they are different enough that they keep surprizing you with item and enemy placements you didn't remember.

Thank you for making this, I've been sitting on REmake on the GameCube for years now and could never get into it, both because I was intimidated by the idea of the Crimsonheads, and because of the unnecessary door cutscenes [you can literally hear the disc stop spinning in the first seconds of the animation, the area's already loaded damn it!] But, knowing that Crimsonheads can't go through doors, and that I can also decapitate or blow up a zombie to keep them from coming back, when I thought you HAD to burn them, AND knowing that you can navigate around a lot of zombies, is going to be invaluable knowledge going back in again. Plus, I've come to realize that tank controls, limited saves, and the door animations could easily have been removed or made into a toggle option in REmake, but the developers of both the original and the remake decided to keep those as they were, an intentional design decision. As someone who wants the most authentic version of the author's vision, REmake GameCube actually sounds perfect for me, given some time to either adjust to the tiny shitty dpad on that controller, or using the new control method of pressing R to run forward and using left and right on the analog stick to turn the character. I've gotta come in as a massive Saturn nerd though, and say that Saturn emulation does NOT have a "long way to go", the community has made big strides in the past few years, it's damn near perfect now and sometimes even preferable to real hardware since you can harness your PC's power to reduce frame drops and slowdown. So what was once true no longer is- if you've been wanting to try the Saturn version, absolutely give it a go with Mednafen, or SSF if you don't mind a bit of Japanese menu navigation to get it set up.

I really don't get all the hate that tank controls get unless you aren't using a PS1/PS2 controller, I played Onimusha for the first time recently and the tank controls feel extremely natural and precise, even for a more action oriented game as Onimusha where you need to dodge enemies and parry them. Great video, hope you do more of these for the sequels in the future.

I hear you on Onimusha. I played it for the first time this year and was surprised how well it controlled with the faster combat. Sidestepping around an enemy feels cool.

One thing, Resident Evil DS also has the knife bound to the L button without using the inventory. This to me greatly helps Chris's run of the game since he only has six item slots. With the display of the map at all times, as well as skippable door transitions, I think Resident Evil Deadly Silence is a good introduction to the series, if you don't mind a lower resolution.

This game is a true classic, and very playable today, think of tank controls as a 1st person controls with 3rd person camera. I'll leave some more tips: 1. In the original you can blow up multiple zombies' heads if you shoot up with the shotgun with them close enough, this is useful to preserve ammo; 2. Also, if multiple fallen zombies stack or the colors in the background make you unsure if they're all dead, walk backwards and your character's frightened body language will denounce that some enemy is still alive; 3. To deal with hunters, always carry one or two green herbs and keep your health on "fine". They will only use their instant kill move against you if your health isn't full; 4. Also if you se a hunter make a high jump, immediately shoot up and it will fall on its back on the floor, where you can shoot it again (shoot down, close enough to it) or run for safety. You can do this with any weapon, but avoid using the pistol unless they are very far and walking instead of running
@Fonald3D
@Fonald3D 2 года назад
Great tips, I had no idea Hunters only did the insta-kill swipe if you're on less than full health. Very devious.

@@KasumiRINA I haven't played the PC version of RE1, only the two PSX versions and the DS. The general rule is that you must be close enough and aim up in order to blow their heads. I don't remember ever managing to blow zombies' heads without aiming up.

I enjoyed this video! And thanks for giving props to the DS version. Its my favourite way to play - the always-on map, skippable door anims, knife doesn't take up space and is mapped to the shoulder button...just wish it didn't have lower Q visuals. But hot dang it's amazing.

Actually I think this video kinda undersells the DS version. In my opinion, it’s such a drastic improvement over the original, it’s hard to go back. Knife always mapped on L so it’s doesn’t take an inventory slot, quick turn, map always on top screen, new character animations and an entirely new mode in Rebirth that switches the items and enemies around, and also has new puzzles and a new boss fight. Graphics aren’t worse: character models are actually improved and they have new animations. Background are a little downscaled due to the DS screens lower resolution, but when you actually see them in those tiny screens, they don’t look bad at all. It’s definitely my way to play the original nowadays.

I totally disagree about the new controls in the HD version. I could never get them to work right. Any time I swapped to a new angle, my brain just couldn't keep up and I got grabbed constantly. I guess if you're good with them, you could zip past zombies, but I just couldn't.
@adamsunderland0823

Yeah. When it switches angles while running you have to awkwardly switch directions on the stick. The character stops running for a second. It feels terrible. Tank controls are better unless you're speed running.

Hello there! Do you happen to know if the load times between backgrounds are baked into REmake on GCN? I'm noticing a bit of a stutter whenever new backgrounds load, even in cutscenes. (For example, the Barry cutscene when he and Jill notice blood on the floor. Each time the camera angle changes, there's a bit of stutter. This also happens when moving from the front of the room to the back of the room, always when the camera angle is changing.)

Thank you for the kind words. Your love for the DS version is palpable but at the end of the day its a tough sell to people when PS1 emulation is so much more accessible than digging out the DS or tinkering around with the dual screen options in melonDS/Desume. I think the biggest downside to the scaled down backgrounds is the very noticeable colour shift, it reminds me a bit of composite video. Still, I think Deadly Silence is a great version for the fans and I understand the love.

Nice video. This kind of content is specially important to encourage modern audiences to try the classics of the medium (and very good games in general). A good recomendation like this can help not only to guide and introduce but also to breake prejudices like all the bitching and moaning on tank controlls. Hell, it's surprisingly common how a lot of game desing students refuse to play older games because "they are too old and they'd rather play indies instead". The only thing I didn't like about your video it's that you spoiled the existance of the crimson heads. I know it's quite the atractive selling point of the remake, but as you know for sure, the game keeps them as a surprise for those who played the original and anticipates them in a note on the first save room. I think a little insinuation of something worse happening with the common zombies would have been enough. Other than that, great video. You'd like to do a guide on Final Fantasy 1? I think's another good case of "popular classic with a lot of different versions that make substancial changes".
@Fonald3D
@Fonald3D 2 года назад
Thanks for watching chief. I tried my best not to spoil the many spooks of these two games but you can't win em all. There's a guy called Austin SV on RU-vid who's been doing in-depth comparisons between every version of the Final Fantasy games, he does it way more justice than I could. I think my next video will be how to get through Ultra-V Rated mode on Viewtiful Joe.

The HD versions of REmake actually have issues people don't talk about, like some of the soundtrack randomly being sped up, and the ambient occlusion making graphical details harder to see.
@Fonald3D
@Fonald3D 2 года назад
Certain tracks in HD REmake being sped up is something I forgot to mention. It's all outlined in the PCGW page for it though. Replaying this for footage there was definitely one or two occasions where I missed something because of the crushed black levels. Overall I think the touched up HD backgrounds do look better than the GameCube release if you're just playing it on a flat screen with Dolphin.

One of the things that makes RE1 so replayable is how every port has enough nuanced differences to make for a unique experience in every playthrough. The OG PS1 version is fucking hard, the director's cut is the best experience on OG hardware, the Saturn and DS ports have some neat bonuses not found in other versions, the PC version is easy to set up and has nice QOL mods, and then the REmake is obviously a great game in its own right warranting a separate playthrough all its own.

Have you ever played the early beta builds? They're floating around out there and they're pretty interesting. @@Fonald3D Sorry RU-vid never notified me that you'd replied to my comment lol Yeah the first of those betas was actually compiled the day I was born apparently, and it's a neat curio to see how its atmosphere was still in flux at that stage of development.
