This video discusses the regulations for staying legal in Colorado while hunting elk. We discuss the weapon itself including legal sight systems, ammo, powder, primers, and the gear I take with me while hunting elk in the backcountry. This will be my third Colorado bull elk muzzleloading tag and 13 in a row backcountry elk hunts in Colorado.
Who we are:
We are a family of three trying to create our own piece of paradise in rural Oklahoma. Nathan practices as a physician assistant and works in family medicine. Tara is a registered nurse. Samuel is our world. He loves farm life, especially the animals.
About the ranch:
Murray Farm and Ranch is located in south central Oklahoma. The farm and ranch was really born out of a desire to grow, raise, and harvest more of our own food. We had motivation to become more self-sufficient. We breed and raise longhorn cattle. Vegetable gardening is central to our mission of providing more of our own food supply.
Channel Goals:
Our principle mission with the RU-vid channel is to help educate viewers. So much of this way of life has been forgotten. We would like to shed light on some techniques, skills, and traditions that have been set on the wayside. Our second goal is share our joy of living a simple life on the farm. This way of life is not for everyone. Work can be hard and seem never ending. The end results though will almost certainly leave you healthier and happier. This way of life can seem so far away in the beginning but by taking just a few simple steps you as viewer can become more self-sufficient, resilient, and start your own homesteading journey. Please subscribe to the channel to follow along in our homestead, farm, ranch journey!

I hope you got your bull. It’s 2023 and I am going back to my home state of Wyoming to try and outsmart an antelope with either my .62 caliber Rifled flintlock or my .54 caliber early Virginia pattern flintlock. I am a gunsmith and started building flintlocks several years ago and love the challenge. Great information on your video. I have several Sharps and Rolling block rifles and I shoot the MVA tang sights with the MVA globe front sights with spirit level. We can send 530 grain 30:1 cast lead bullets out to 1000 yards (as long as the wind cooperates) all day long and make some impressive hits. Thank you for your video and BTW… your “helper” was cracking me up… I have a few grandsons just like him.

Thank you for watching! I did connect on a 5x6. I peaked over a cliff edge and he was feeding directly below me. My shot was at an extreme angle but the shot sunk high behind the left shoulder and exited low behind the right shoulder. He turned around 1 time and fell almost exactly where he was originally standing. Those are some amazing shots you are making! My little man is starting to get the itch to hunt. I took him with me to elk camp last year. We went 4 for 4 in Wyoming. This year I drew a first season rifle tag in Colorado and a late rifle season elk tag in Arizona. I should have some good hunting in front me this fall!

@@murrayfarmranch8447 good luck brother and be safe in the woods. I am happy you got a bull. Our muzzleloaders will put the smack on them. I’ve been blessed to take 38 elk in my life… only 15 were bulls… I shot the first legal moose, elk, deer, antelope or bear I saw, my kids never knew what beef tasted like until they went off to college… lol

@raytribble8075 thank you! I’m excited, my Arizona hunt will be a solo DIY hunt in December. That one will be a challenge but I am here for it. Man you have made them hit the dirt! it’s the same around our place. I started elk hunting my last year of PA school in 2007. I’ve connected on 7 bulls, a moose, antelope, mule deer, and more whitetail than you can shake a stick at. We raise beef on our farm but our boys eat their weights in game every year.

Thanks, appreciate your perspective. How was the performance of the power belt on the elk? Thoughts on hornady bore drivers?
@murrayfarmranch8447
@murrayfarmranch8447 Год назад
Thank you for watching. The power belt was easy to find. It was buried right below the surface on the opposite side of the elk. It had good expansion. That elk took less than 5 to 10 steps before piling up. I’ve killed numerous whitetails with power belts also. I’ve heard a lot of bad reviews on powerbelts but I’ve had no issues. I use them because they are easy to find in stores and my group of buddies all use them as well so our system is interchangeable with each other. I do not have any experience with the hornady bullets but I shoot SST in two of my big game rifles. I think anything hornady puts out is quality.

Getting prepared for a hunt here in idaho in in September for cow. I’ve used a traditional in the past and my particular rifle will only shoot well enough for about an 80 yard shot and so I’ve been looking into a inline. I heard you talk about 200 yrds and was curious what kinda group your able to maintain at 150 and 200 yards with your setup? Great video btw!
@murrayfarmranch8447
@murrayfarmranch8447 Год назад
Thank you for watching! At 100 yards my 3 shot group is almost touching or at a maximum 1-2 inches, at 150 it’s probably 3-4 inches and at 200 I can put 3 shots inside of a pie plate which I think is plenty good on elk. I’ve never taken a shot that far on a live animal but would feel okay about it if I did.

That’s impressive. Unfortunately us over here in idaho arnt able to use 209’s so no blackhorn either. I just picked up a traditions buckstalker xt northwest model and will spend the next several months trying to get it dialed in a bit. Also gunna invest in the Williams sight as long as the accuracy i see warrants it. Thanks again and good luck this year!

Hey Nate. Do you use a scale to measure your powder or just the marks on the plastic tubes? Thanks much
@murrayfarmranch8447
@murrayfarmranch8447 9 месяцев назад
If you have a scale and can pre-measure then just use the tubes for quick reloading I think that is the way to go. For shorter range stuff I’ve found the tubes to be close enough but if I’m trying to stack ‘em at 200 yards I like to take as much variable out as possible. Thanks for watching!

Have found it better to go by grain weight with BH 209 rather than volumetric. More consistent.
@murrayfarmranch8447
@murrayfarmranch8447 Год назад
I agree its definitely more consistent to go off grain weight. The volume tubes are convenient and probably fine for short and intermediate distances though.

Can you help me? Also i live in Rhode Island.

I think you will be very pleased with the Blackhorn 209 powder. It is readily available in my area in just about any sporting goods store like cabelas, bass pro, and even Wal-Mart has it in our area. I’m sure things are a little different in Rhode Island. muzzle-loaders.com is an excellent online source. muzzle-loaders.com/products/muzzleloader-brass-nipple-pick-mz1582

If you backpack hunt in during muzzleloader hunting. What precautions do you use to keep your muzzleloader dry while it’s loaded. Wondering what you do in the case of rain or snow. Or… if you’re sleeping in your tent at night do you put a gun sock over it?

I use a product made by Solo Hunter. It’s made of a durable material that is not easily penetrated by moisture. I prefer it over a barrel condom or tape because it keeps moisture out of the action as well. Several ago in Colorado I was in some freezing rain. I had my barrel protected by electrical tape but moisture seeped in around the bolt of my rifle and froze. My action was completely locked up until mid morning when it thawed out. I do sleep with my muzzy laying beside my sleeping pad. solohntr.com/products/mtn-lite-rifle-cover

@@murrayfarmranch8447 great info thank you. Been building a few points for a muzzle tag in CO and am thinking of applying next year. It’s so far away but I’m getting exited for it already.
@murrayfarmranch8447
@murrayfarmranch8447 10 месяцев назад
That’s great! Building those points pays off. Last year I drew a Wyoming tag. It was hands down the most elk I’ve ever seen on a hunt. I drew two tags this year. I have a 1st season rifle tag in Colorado and a late season rifle hunt in Arizona. I hope for an amazing fall. It’s expensive to build the points in multiple states on multiple species but it really pays off with quality hunts.

I have 6 points going into the 2022 draw so I am hoping to be back after then in 2022 with the smoke pole. Thank you for watching.

@murrayfarmranch8447

Did you get the lite ones
@murrayfarmranch8447
@murrayfarmranch8447 Год назад
Yes. I thought for that particular setup light was best. For a precision rifle I think I’d go with the Pro Hunt but for a weapon that I expect 200 yards or less out of I feel pretty good with those.

Could you please clear up the legality of using 209 shot shell primers !?!?! At about 2:40 into the video you say that they are illegal ….& then at about 5:40 in you say to use them !?!
@murrayfarmranch8447
@murrayfarmranch8447 2 года назад
Sorry for the confusion. I say “shot shell primers are legal” however it kind of sounds like I say illegal in the video. Colorado DOES allow 209 shotshell primers and I highly recommend those over percussion caps. I also recommend using an actual shotgun 209 over the “muzzleloader 209s.” There is a noticeable difference in the quality of them. Thanks for watching!

I have harvested a couple elk in Colorado with round balls from a .50 cal. muzzle loading rifle. I don't use nor do I like to use powerbelt bullets. I look at them as no longer primitive firearms. Folks using any bullet with plastic on it just want to hunt in black powder season because of the advantage they get by hunting in or near the rut. It is my belief that good animal husbandry would allow no one to hunt in the rut and CPW is no longer about that but all about the money. It is legal to use your muzzle loading rifle during the regular rifle season by simply buying an over the counter license. Give it a try. To do it you must be a hunter.
