MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is an upcoming BattleTech Mecha game under development by Piranha Games and due for release on December 10, 2019 on Windows. It is the first single player MechWarrior game since 2002. It will be Epic Games Store exclusive and is slated to have raytracing powered by Nvidia RTX as well as DLSS.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is set in 3015 during the final decade of the Third Succession War, casting the player as a rookie mercenary MechWarrior rising from the ashes of a demolished mercenary unit. They are able to accept contracts from the various factions available in this time period. The campaign is said to go all the way up to 3049, just before the Clan Invasion."

For me, the worst thing in the late game was that you can only have 12 mechs in your bay (eleven if you want to grab someone new). Most of them assaults because you can't just alow mediums or light in your late lance

The Leopard dropship we are using should only have 4 mechbays. So even the current 12 mechbays would need a bigger dropship. Something like the argo in battletech could be solution.

Indeed, I have been thinking about how great a union dropship mod would be. We have the assets available for the most part. That said, I'd like the expense to be a real factor, and maybe even allow us to configure it with equipment if the studio was on the job.

Always nice to have a spider or something for smash and evac missions. Atleast I've had success around difficulty 60 missions with a spider. I haven't gotten further than that.

Facts. 12 isn't enough. Cuz I have my mechs I play with and my squad mates have theirs. So where the fuck am I gonna put my back up mechs for when I don't wanna fix everything right away?

I'm afraid that the switching between the mechs in the lance IS the dumb AI fix. I don't want to have to keep switching between mechs just to make my lancemates do their jobs. Melee...cool...I want my Death From Above!

If you’re on pc there are some mods that change the AI to be better. If not probably gonna have to do co-op

If you set individual weapons groups for your mechs that are piloted by AI pilots..they perform much better

There were some improvements in the last update. Lights used much more hit and run. Using cover better. It was only a small incremental improvements but it was still a step further. I wouldn't care about the ai as much if they gave us more command options. You could tell them which range to engage at, move to a way point, protect a target. Disengage.

I agree I've noticed some improvement too :-) I think a system like elite dangerous would suit this game; attack my target, defend me/objective, have fun n attack any target and keep yourself safe would be the 4 orders that could help improve them I think :-)

I remember playing MW3 or 4 and leaving my lance mates a the edge of a city or someplace because they actually made the mission harder with how stupid they were... basically was easier to deal with the mission with out them sometimes. LOL

I'm so glad I can run this, I wasn't always so fortunate. Just getting into the VRWarrior however and I see how much I really need to work on a better rig. That said, let's hope none of this really breaks our mods for long... As it is, the mods really make the game a gigaton more enjoyable. And on that note, regarding your concerns about the AI, the saving grace is that you can actually make whatever you want in the mw5 editor, with the power of UE4+... o7 Good hunting, MechWarrior!

I think the mech switching is good for getting your Lance mates unstuck. Meny times the AI gets stuck.

Melee!! More reason to pilot an Atlas 100% agreed on the stupid AI. Imagine having proper AI code that leaves room for different AI pilot character types, like hothead, cautious, seasoned mechwarrior etc. It would basically just be different weightings in their behavioral script. So you wouldn't only have the choice between good and bad pilots, but you could also kinda pick the personalities you prefer. And of course, you could still order them around - and the way and speed they react could also differ. So many possibilities to flesh out those NPCs..

certain overhaul mods allow you to designate mech roles, brawler, fire support, striker, sniper... This improves the ai somewhat, HOWEVER the main issue is that they share the same issue the player has, no shared sensors, I think that shared sensors would go along way to fixing ai behavior, would be cool to introduce equipment that allows lance shared sensors, part of the issue i think is that while the player can see and target most targets the ai can only see some of it, so they cant react appropriately, formations might also play a part as that also dictates ai logic, lrm boats cant support if they are literally a few feet behind the player, would be nice to allow loose formations to allow those support mechs to target and stay back in their range bracket... some ideas that may improve HOW the ai behaves as the ai logic seems solid but cant perform based on the other options that may affect it.

The number one reason why i have stopped playing the game is: none of my friends is interested in Battletech games so i have no one to Coop with. And soloing this game is unfunny to me. The team AI always sucks and micromanage them in realtime is stressful to me rather then fun. So i stick with MWO and Battletech.

well i am looking forward to this, i feel it was a step backwards in the timeline progression. i dont want to rehash what others have commented on as for the AI problem as thats obvious, melee is a great addition. a proper mechlab should be implemented, buying another drop ship for more lancemate call downs, a proper SOLARIS 7 participation would be really nice. with all that being said i really hope the next dlc will an indepth multiple dlc Clan invasion SERIES after this. just my opinion. love the content and hope to see you put out more

It would actually be cool if they added the ability to just full on customize a loadout for a mech like in mechwarrior online but without needing mods to do so. I play on console

I’m kinda disappointed that the new variants list didn’t include any mechs that traditionally equipped melee weapons but with the groundwork laid out, I’m hopeful that mod authors will make some for me lol

I've not had an overabundance of issues with AI Lancemates...my only real complaint being their propensity to stop a Defense mission flat while defending it. As far as problems firing, I've noticed that their behavior can be controlled by how you group their weapons (for the most part) and kit their mechs. For example, if I'm going to have an LRM boat in an Archer 2r, I remove two medium lasers and add two heatsinks since AI pilots typically won't make the decision to Overheat, so once they get hot enough, they'll close range and use medium lasers...continuously staying at heat redline...instead of waiting a few moments to sink heat and loosing another flight or LRMs. Since they're a Fire Support role, the loss of the two medium lasers in no way impacts their performance...in fact, it improves it...and by grouping weapons as one LRM20 in Group 1, both LRM20s in Group Two, and two medium lasers in Group 3 (for close in harassing vehicles) the AI tends to evaluate far better whether it needs 20 or 40 missiles to destroy a target, and thus wastes less ammunition and generates less heat. So, as long as my builds aren't on the raggedy edge of operability to squeeze every last point of damage out of them as if a highly competitive player were driving them, they tend to work just fine. There are some who would say "you shouldn't have to do that" and I might tend to agree if I were of the Min/Max mentality...but I'm not, and I don't think there will ever be an AI geared towards playing "POWER OVERWHELMING" playstyles instead of the "Enough is Fine" format they seem to be currently set at.

@@riptors9777 in my opinion highly unlikely. Mwo is a *insert a few bad words* of coding and performance. I doubt they could get sometime like that work decently on MWO. Mw5 on the other hand just gives them way more practical ways to do stuff due the more modern unreal engine :) Mwo has a lot of issues need to taken care of before that could work decently i guess

Haven't played in a while, but isn't the ai still inefficient unless you group their weapons a certain way for them? It'd suck to switch mechs just to stop and re-group weapons all the time.

I'm not 100% on this, but i'm certain there are AI mods that improve what your lance mates can do, and how they function. If that's not enough, i do remember that you made a video 3 months ago explaining some dev questions where they said that they would be making changes, Hopefully that is added into the change log for Sept 23.

The AI's primary problem is that their accuracy-over-range table is really bad. It's not the only thing that needs improvement but its the main one. There's a mod on the Nexus that simply gives them the boss enemy type of accuracy table and it instantly fixes all their behaviors downstream of shooting bad guys. There's no need for a total overhaul like TTRulez to get them going. If vanilla AI are seen walking around not firing weapons with enemies in front of them it is really because they're overheating and missed all their shots, not that their AI broke. When you combine boss accuracy and engine double heat sink mechs (with mods or the few DLC ones that have them), you will see them fire constantly like madmen and deal as much damage as you do in the results screen.

I don't think you are right. I build Mechs with good cooling, but without TT_AI they still are not fireing. I tested evey Mech myself and I know what they are capable of, The AI just doesn't make use of what is possible by simply not fireing.

@@reddino4579 Occasionally they aren't doing as much as they could, but most of the time its working out for me if I do minimal tard wrangling. Making them TOO good will tank the game's difficulty. If you're already using the mod, try swapping around their loadouts between simple and complicated builds. The vanilla AI definitely does struggle with complicated mechs more than simple ones.

Nice explanation. I'll check out the accuracy mod. Still does not explain the countless cases I saw of stutter-step and no-shoot in mechs that cannot overheat and have every single weapon set to its own weapon group.

@@TTBprime I do honestly believe that the ai routines do not function mostly because they dont always see correctly, you can see this when the ai lancemates fire on something that you were not aware of, some sort of shared sensor mod/change might help. (lore could be sensor equipment as some modders have introduced) ALSO a formation change option may also help, I dont see lrm mechs fire as much due to always having to follow the player so close, most of the time i think that causes ai faults to not be able to fire as well due to them always being so close to the player. Would be nice to add formations some how that change how close the ai follows (they may not fire cause the player is in the way?)... These two things can potentially improve the ai with out changing the logic that already exists as it already seems weighted pretty well for what they need to do.

@@mikea4169 Actually the AI uses roll-hit-percentage based aimbot and can see through walls. You can see that when they try and alpha strike enemies through terrain, buildings... or sometimes your own mech.

Ah.. there it is.. the single player campaign.. only took them 2 years to put one in ^^ But hey we get melee combat, that will be a first... lets hope the physics engine doesnt spazz out and we launch mech into outer space with falcon punches XD New biomes are allways welcome. No word on new mechs or tech though... then again that would be a tad difficult since its the 4th succession war.

A lot of those ‘Mech variants are added by mods. I wonder how these will work with mods like YAML? May be a game breaker.

so in regards to the lance mate ai, I have seen better performance with mods, I think that the ai could behave better if they shared targeting data? lurm boats cant shoot what they cant see, if they simply change this I believe ai would be better, if they introduce sensor equipment to allow shared player targeting it may improve the ai somewhat. Also would love the ability to change formations, the mech swapping resolves the sending lancemate issue to evac and or scouting. Not sure how the weapon groups swapping will be resolved as ai cant use player weapon grouping all that well, will it allow player weapon groups vs stock ai ones? bit of a ramble, but all in all i think they are improving this for the better, new features are always good.

I'm expecting this to closely copy what was in the battletech expansions and/or base game. so expect melee mods you can install in arms to increase melee damage/stability damage at the cost of mostly slots with a bit of tonnage. Also, AI performance is relative. Better AI would be nice, but its extremely resource intensive to develop and on CPU etc to run. Making enemy AI dumber is probably a much easier solution for game balance, just script them to do "rookie mistakes" or something. Always need to remember when discussing how "bad" the AI is, its running both your team and your opposing team.

Im assuming that like the other dlc the only change is introduction of new missions that will pop up, I really doubt you wont be able to import into your previous saves.

Yeah...they invested ressources in developing the switching ability...instead they should have taken the problem head on, and improve the AI. Then there is no need for switching in the 1st place, if your lance mates are reliable. Additionally introduce somekind of endgame leveling feature for the AI (and something like that for the player), where the pilot gets and better with the most piloted Mech, by piloting the same Mech over and over. And i think that the new content will still suffer from the same fate as the maingame and the 1st DLC also...the poor AI performance.

Mech AI is designed that I think, either lazy or cause it is mech WARRIOR and not Commander. cause if AI does everything you as pilot would be too çhilled sitting in cockpit. Therefore yes it does make me always use the gangbang technique, 4mechvs1 situation very often. Developers wants me to do that. The Melee is what lacks in all series, it is really needed to give me a sense I am actually in a MECH for all these YEARS! Battletech has it and MW not, I couldn't believe that! BUT my biggest issue now is then, If they really want to make it as big as any other AAA game,.. THE infantry FIX it, squad of 5 near batteries or defensive positions, how hard is THAT!

I understand where you come from, but with that argument all dlcs of all games would be free. The $20 for both DLCs is fair value imho, especially for PGI being a smaller indy dev. I support them because without them we got no stompy robots, and because of their constant improving the game.

when will the port this to multi player? MWO sucks compared to this game yet, MW5 sux for not supporting multiplayer. and i am not talking about doing missions with a couple friends. I mean PvP strait up.

They would be competing with themselves if this game ever got real PvP multiplayer, so very low chance of that. But this might be the basis for a MWO2 somewhere in the future.

Thank you bringing up AI it is the same reason why I stopped playing. If they want to say just play with other real people then thats another problem coop is so bad they get no money exp and cant bring their own mechs.

I think that they could fix this by allowing the creation of a coop pilot, basically only thing that i can think of where you get treated like a merc, get reduced exp or cbills for playing to help a friend? mech destruction would cause no gain or a payment for losing the mech (maybe options to enable host options such as getting paid from the coop pilot profile to cover mech destruction costs) but this would allow potentially some way to create a stable of mechs and salary, since currently you dont really get to choose anything for playing? if they introduce matchmaking, which I doubt they will do, this may be a way to some what make people happy? plus lore friendly too.

underwhelming. all theyve done for the most part is take what significant modders have already done for free, and have charged for it. yeah the succession wars missions im into, but thats it, everyones obsession with melee is ridiculous, it will be underused, underwhelming and pointless. and the mech switching is...fine.. i guess, but the novelty will wear off. disappointing. also, this will be even heavier on resources, in a game that is already very poorly optimised

When do we get the Clan Wars? The punching BS is just that ...BS! This is just a fill-in because they can't get a real DLC going for the Clan Wars I bet. Skins? I want content not pretty crap that does nothing for the game or story. If they finally put the radar where it should have been all along. Not impressed with the Mech switching. Want content and authored missions are so far the only ones worth a damn so far. So about all I get from this is some authored missions and a mechanic that is kinda stupid. I'll be switching to W10 to play this and one other game in a week. New biomes is a good deal. I bet they screw up the punching too...it should damage the fist and arm just as much as it damages the opposing Mech. Oh boy, now I get to wait for the mods to come out (eventually in a few months) before I can actually have a game that plays right for me.

Mechs dont get damaged by punching or kicking their oponents, wasnt like that on the tabletop or the lore. Yes this DLC is a bit light when it comes to actual features, but i guess with PGI that is all we can expect.

Mechwarrior 2, 3 and 4 had good AI in that you could issue orders to your lancemates and they would do as you tell them. Want them to form on you? they could, want them to attack your target? they could, want them to attack the closest target? they could. Something like that would be better than just letting them go with no instructions.

As much as I loved MW2, 3, and 4, the AI wasn't any better in those games. The difference was that in the older games the maps were handcrafted so the AI had less potential obstructions for movement. And also the enemy AI in the older games was dumb as rocks, so it made your teammate AI seem good in comparison. Not saying that the AI in MW5 doesn't deserve to be better. With the new tech at their disposal, PGI should be ashamed for how bad the teammate AI acts.
