I've always kinda seen Jay Z as Big L's protégé in this freestyle and same on Jay Z's feature on Big L's album, I may be wrong but I've always thought at the time this freestyle came out Big L was more well known. No disrespect to Jay Z, he's one of the greatest ever but Big L was in a different league when it came to emceeing.

Big L had the lyrics but if you fast forward Jay z had the albums. Jay z voice and flow is more appealing on a track the way he talks. It came with time but who’s to say big l would not have done the same. We will never know. But it’s like Krs had the lyrics but Kane had the lyrics but the charisma on track it’s hard to explain. Not disrespecting big l because I like him not saying Jay z better. Just listen to Jay z when he spits fast or quick tongue it’s more polish then big l when he does it it’s clear you can ear it. Jay z is effortlessly flow big l is not but that’s not to say big l is not good just to say Jay z voice and flow is more polish. Big l might have the lyrics but the flow is Jay z

You nailed it, Eminem has said that about Big L. I'm old enough to remember hearing this live on Stretch and Bobbito. Also Jay-z is on Big L's debut album. Dame Dash(Jay-z manager at that time) is from Harlem that's how they knew each other. He was in talks to be part of the Roc when he died.

Jay-Z was Big L's guest on that freestyle at the radio station that night. New York radio stations had freestyles every weekend like that in the 90s on the regular. They went down in history more than some official traccs

this was live on the NY radio. Jay Z met Big L at the station, Jay Z just came from Reeves R&B party that the police raided. Big L originally thought he made some mistakes with his own verses. The radio station was willing waive airing commercials to keep them going. this is iconic.

I was actually listening to the Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito show live when they did this and was absolutely blown away. Only thing that pissed me off was that I didn’t have a blank tape with me to record it. Big L slayed this beat.. Jay did his thing but I’ve never considered Jay an all time great lyricist, but what Jay is, that no rapper can touch, is he’s a great businessman. Jay is the rap version of Madonna. She wasn’t a great singer but she was an amazing businesswoman

The freestyles are definitely written, or at least thought of beforehand. Back in the day freestyle used to just mean rhymes that you had prepared in the back of your head that didn't really have a story or message to them. Off the dome was actually coming up with stuff spontaneously.

Big L was about to sign to Jay's label Roc-a-fella in 99 but got blasted a week before signing. He woulda blown the fuck up after that, so sad. Him and Pun are two of the best and maybe the GOATs, but only had two albums apiece. Such a shame. But hey, Puffy's still alive so it all evens out, right? (what a joke)... Always the good ones that have to die... Nice react homie. May I offer a suggestion? Every time you pause just hit that left arrow key and back it up 5 seconds before you resume, cause you miss bars sometimes, especially with Big L and Pun and the best rappers. They don't ever waste a word! Love your reactions man. Keep it up! I got some bangers that no one reacts to that are sooo good from L and Pun, if you want some tasty deep cuts. Big L - Furious Anger Big L - 5 Fingas of Death Big L - On The Mic Big Pun - Boomerang Big Pun - Glamour Life Big Pun - Tres Leches Try and pull up lyric videos for these, it helps, especially with Pun. If you can't find them, pull up Genius, cause these two have so many punches. Thanks bro! You gotta subscriber outta me on the first vid I watched. You're also right that Jay didn't write his lines - ON PAPER. He wrote them in his head. Only Biggie and him did that. Check out articles on the making of "Brooklyn's Finest" and "I Love The Dough", where they are both on the track. Both of them were pacing back and forth in the studio, writing their verses in their heads and trying to out-rap each other. Legends! PS - It's almost unanimous that Big L won that session over Jay, you won't piss anyone off. It's undeniable!
