I hope this means more Vickers clips are coming! (One of my favourites, just for laughs, is his part of Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix opposite Verrett from Covent Garden. He sings most of it leaning back, and softly. Then he leans back some more and sings louder, then leans back even more-at this point, he's practically horizontal-and sings even louder. Just because he can LOL. Je T'AAAAAIIImehhh! You'd have a hard time finding open, full-throated singing like this anymore-and I mean both him and Verrett. These days it's all about that pinched sound forced out through the mask, whatever that means.)
Great performance by Vickers!!!Along with Ramon Vinay ,MDM, Jon Vickers in the performance conducted by Tulio Serafin in 1960 , had not then sung the role on stage, but his interpretation has a maturity to be wondered at. ‘Dio! mi potevi scagliar’ is near perfect: correctly accentuated, sung mezza voce with no muttering, truly dolcissimo at ‘l’anima acqueto’. If the top B flats aren’t quite there in the duet with Iago, the love duet has a manly robustness and the final ‘Un bacio’ as he lies dying is tenderness itself!
The mezza voce is for me what really cinches his supremacy in this role. No one else floats the lines at the end of the love duet along with his Desdemona. Absolutely exquisite

Vickers, vu en 70 à Salzbourg dirigé par Karajan, avec Freni et Glossop, reste égal à lui-même, mon meilleur Otello, d’une grande sensibilité, grande musicalité, interprète des plus intelligents, grand verdien, très bien soutenu ici par l’excellent Levine, autre grand Verdien, et une très sensible Scotto au très bel art du chant, fragile et poignante. Vickers Don Josė était éblouissant, Vickers Peter Grimes fut stupéfiant d’humanité dramatique. Un merveilleux artiste rarement égalé. Merci Lohengrin.
That great voice. It looked as if Renata Scotto was really frightened of him. I remember watching an interview with Scotto, and she said he was so intense and she thought he was really going to strangle her. He looked so evil. Horribly taken by Alzheimer’s. That was a stellar cast at the Met.
Jon Vickers, foi um dos melhores, se não o melhor Othello, Tristão e Peter Grimes de todos os tempos. Ele bem merece o título que recebeu do NYTIMES. "Tenor monumental" será que vai aparecer alguém que possa enfrentar estes três papéis com a grandiosidade deste Deus. Duvido. Bjs.
As much as I like Vickers I still think Mario de Monico's early 60's recording is the finest and the same for Tebaldi and Karajan/VPO/Decca engineering all at their very best. A classic recording if ever there was one.

Dopo aver letto questo splendido commento mi sono ricordato anche di altri altrettanto splendidi. Sono andato a rivederli e non mi ero sbagliato. La fonte era la stessa come la stessa è la perfetta analisi del brano ascoltato. Ancora brava ma....per la miseria , come nel celebre film " lei mi ha letto nel pensiero".
