@@michaeledmunds7056 tbh he kinda have no choice. By that point you're basically his chosen, cleaning up the mess he caused when he gave up his domains to the Dicks Three. He can't directly go and snap the Assholute out of existence, so he needs you alive and in full health to deal with it. That's why his resurrection rates are also dirt cheap.

Remember that while jergal lives his divine domains are still his (the 3 didn't use a spell like karus folly or they didn't absorb him) He's just letting the 3 use them but could probably take em back whenever he wants
I feel like if he could do it he would have done so after the shit they pulled with the illithids, because they're not even proper deities anymore, they're quasi-deities, Myrkul in particular being basically redundant at this point with Kelemvor watching over the dead.
did you watch the epilogue? he's chastising them like a father scolding 3 foolish kids. him guiding and aiding the PC *is* him doing something about it. the PC is the avatar of jergal by the end
I've just started a campaign and was planning on having Myrkul be the god that the early bad guy was trying to summon, but I may switch it around to them trying to summon one of Jergal's servants to "fix" a rounding error that Jergal found concerning souls being collected after death, because there's someone in the Underdark devouring souls.
It would be awesome if all this was part of a bigger plan Jergal had years earlier. A bigger power play Jergal may have going on. That the Dead Three were apart of something Jergal planned.
there's like a secret post-credit scene in BG3 that does very heavily hint at this although Jergal is portrayed as more on the lawful good side in the game and almost like a grandfather to the MC- especially if you go with the redeemed dark urge as Daniela said
Recently I thought: what if Jergal fooled Baal, Bane and Myrkul? After all, although he ceased to be the main deity of death, nevertheless, he did not die and still instructs the gods of death. What if he doesn't just "instruct" them, but manipulates them? What if Jergal really wanted not to get rid of the burden, but to create puppets for himself, a screen from behind which he could act without danger?
Well... no. Power for deities is depending on how many worshippers you have. He would gain nothing from that. Next: "without danger" - what kind of danger? Evil deities have their places on Faerun by the decree of the overgod Ao. He doesn't differ between evil / good. The only danger comes from other deities who oppose you. You can counter that by making alliances and / or getting more worshippers. So giving away worshippers is counterproductive. Jergal is neutral. His goal is merely to write down the steps of the world to its final destination: the death of all. After everyone died, his job is done. And all the deities will cease to exist as they need worshipers to stay alive.
Jergal is my absolute favorite god in D&D. how many gods can you name in any real _or_ fictional pantheon that willingly stopped being evil at one point?
the theory that withers could be jergal is interesting to me ngl he strikes me as someone that just is around to make sure a certain balance is maintained
So I just discovered this video in my recommendations and I absolutely love it! I'm contemplating starting to DM and all of this sounds like it'll fit very snuggly in a (very far off) campaign idea I have. You just earned yourself a subscriber my guy! Also, just a P.S. fun character idea: I've been messing around with the idea of a "Faceless Man" type character from GoT who's a changeling Paladin Assassin who would also be a fun Jergal worshiper.

This vid happened to be top of my feed when got on. Been watching SteelySam shorts and suggested he should make long form vids. Glad I have this option along with MrRhexx now. I don't play D&D or WH table top but I love learning lore. I've read a lot of WHf books but not 40K which works out well for YT content. I hope to keep finding unique providers of these great lore.
I really wonder how Jergal who rule over all Death can easily pass his duty without Ao doing something about it. His actions kinda let to Time of Troubles (did he plan it actually!?)
I read a theory that Jergal is a God or godlike entity from another realm, outside the Forgotten Realms, that inserted himself into Ao's design and whom Ao had to work around since he could not be removed. Which would explain why Jergal seems to have inherited his portfolio from... nobody.
i went undying warlock of the tome for a scrivener of doom character many of the abilities serve to forestall death but i feel that serves well in the sense that jergal needs living agents that last a long time to gather as many names from the mortal realms as possible and speak with dead being on a short rest timer is invaluable to a scrivener of his flock this character is also a multiclass with artificer doing that oh so common thing of artificers revolutionizing firearms holding true to the theme of "i was X but then the incident happened now im a warlock" all while the poor thing's fate is tugged at by cyric and dispater as for jergal's part in the games im in he is played much more patient and inevitable being that cares nothing about resurrections or extended life knowing full well all withers and dies truly in time the only duty of his scriveners is the gathering of names for his archives each one even writing their own name on the final page of their pact tome to be filed by they themselves in the afterlife "take what you will in life, do your work, and know only that it is temporary..."
In my DnD campaign, my character has a real good chance of dying, so I’m thinking of making a Grave Domain Cleric of Jergal/oath of Vengance Paladin as a backup.
In my campaign I play a warforged cleric of death who serves kelemvor. (I didn't want to play an evil death cleric) and in our world he went missing no one even the gods didn't know well it turns out after he gave his power to the dark three he left himself enough power to be an angel and he was tricked and imprisoned with an ancient city that held a blood cult forced to wait till he could find a new ruler for the city and hope they would release him. When my character juggernaut found him he said his name was Beobachter. It was after he was freed and sent back to kelemvor that I later received him as a gift from kelemvor to help me along the way. His power is vastly sealed away, along with his memories he didn't even know his true name just his position. Not much more then a scout but when my character learns who he was. Let me tell you I flipped. I'm still playing that story and from my understanding a lot of his memories are locked away and this is a test from kelemvor as well to see if he learned any lessons from what he done and if he could be better then he was with the dark three. Sorry this was so long this is just a little really neat thing my dm used to tie him to the really expanse world he's created and thought it might be interesting for some people.

My LN > LE widowed goth girl lore bard (fallen aasimar not quite aware of her inhuman status due to lonely lifestyle and ability to read in the twilight taken for granted) from Cormyr discovered Jergal and started worshiping him young. She's a bit like Wednesday, but not in comedy setting to lighten her odd and unsettling persona and views. Aura of misfortune followed her since early childhood, taking away by death or scaring off any whom she held dear, and, being quite unfeeling and alien and inhuman in human midst herself, she delighted in study of history and tragedy, permeating Faerun in all ages. She married young her best male friend who aspired to become an adventurer, herself escaping fate of middle class chaperon spinster of a noble lady or a wife, but her party perished, ironically, protecting her as the most dainty and precious of them all. Her husband of 6 years grew distant, because he sensed she cared on surface level, but couldn't make him feel quite loved, they had no kids, and when the adventuring group died, he fell bitter and sought oblivion at the bottom of the bottle. Called her witch and abused her. She eventually lost her temper and made him hang himself in front of her during his drunken tantrum and embraced the fate of being playwright and songstress of tragedies and great strife that make for the most intense and entrancing stories. I am sending her into Avernus, her celestial blood comes from Hellriders that were faithful to Zariel, but deserted and fled to Cormyr, at least children, before Zariel fell. Lana lacks any passion or devotion to supposedly righteous cause to join the Blood Wars, but the sinister undertone of her legacy and the views that she formed in face of loss, resisting the call of churches like that of Shar with her stoicism and callousness and lack of pity for herself might set her onto path of forming a faction of her own, maybe a sort of company of disillusioned soldiers restoring order in ravaged city Elturel in the fallout of the campaign by sorting out guilty and innocent, perished and living by their allegiances and vows, and taking great delight in the absolute brutal execution of law. I was considering multiclassing her into Paladin of Conquest or Vengeance, or maybe Hexblade, because she is still very much lady that has eerie magical prowess, but can only be effective with a knife.

See I’ve thought on that a lot, imo I think he’d view the raven queen as orderly in her practice, but she’s only interested in collecting memories, not studying and cataloguing the death itself. For Him it’s kind of like she’s a cog in the wheel of death processing xD imo at least
