My Dad spoke Spanish, very little English. When he heard Marty Robbin’s sing tears welled up in his eyes. He bought the cassette tape of Mr. Robbin’s songs, played them over & over , eventually singing along in English. He would have me play those songs before he passed.

@@gregnormal55. Yes, I am a fan. I have always loved both Merle and Marty but, Merle is a very special country singer, to me. He had a special talent in being able to write a song.
@@helenterry3688 Hey! That’s very good to know, I just can’t stop myself from listening to this song anytime am alone! If I may ask which of all their songs is your favorite? Have a great day… Stay Safe
My uncle was a proud strong man never once seen that man ever shed a tear but when Marty left us he wepped😢 and so did I and for ole Merl none could compare to these two legends
My dad went to school with Marty in Glendale Az. They remained friends. He and Marizona usef to come over and played Canasta with my folks 3:42 . Ronnie was my age. Great memories❤❤❤❤❤ .
Back then country music stars were actually from the country. And the songs they wrote were from the lives they lived. Today's country is just pop rock crap doesn't even sound like country
They also dressed up compared to people today wearing grungy jeans and ladies wearing see thru very low cleavage and outfits up to their butt. Country is music died with these great Ledge s.
@@Shakeyleg Merle was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA. Unless of course you were referring to southern California. But, we both know you weren't. Toodles
I grew up in Alabama in the 60s and 70s. This music takes me home again, remembering some of the few good times in what were otherwise pretty chaotic circumstances.
When George Jones first heard this he stayed up all night learning it. Then he played it over and over at his concert the next day. He thought it was the greatest thing he ever heard.

I had a lengthy conversation one night on the Super Chief with Merle. I asked him about Marty and this performance. He remembered it very vividly and told me some details of the show. The respect he had for Mary Robbins was over the top. When Merle thought more of a singers voice than his own, they were very good and very talented. RIP you guys, I am sure. You guys are singing in glory tonight.
Just saw this comment - you're a lucky man. I would love to have had a chance to talk music and stuff with the Hag. Well done, Billy Goat, I guess I'm jealous!
Well I grew up on country music i"am 55 so I was lucky to be influenced by the true country music. Today it's not the same we lost what made country music different and special. Now it's just pop music with a cowboy hat so they can call it country. That is a poor excuse tow what once good music.
One of Merle's great songs, one of so many. I think Merle does a funny imitation of Marty Robbins singing, right? And those hair-dos are something that we may never see in style again.
An absolute genius in merl haggard a star in his own right who is know for impersonating the man playing the piano the one and only marty robins who out ranks the king elvis to the side lines and becomes the king and a legend of all music there can only be one answer to that! Hail the king Some years ago a star was born but sadly that star was taken from us and that star is now looking down on us with his music and giving peace and joy to the needy in those in today's harsh world and very sad times in our present day its good to know that marty robins is still keeping us going with his music and keeping us safe Your my best friend marty God love you Rest in peace my friend ❤
Cain't nobody performing today come close to these fellers....I don't care how many CDs they sell or how big their busses are. To me this was the Golden Age of country music although I don't think I appreciated it at the time. Also loved Roger Miller, Don Gibson, Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, The Everly Brothers, Statler Brothers and a few other singers.
This was the b-side of Merle's #1 hit from 1968 "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde". It was written by Merle to honor his wife Bonnie Owens who was so instrumental to his career. She helped write the lyrics and was credited as co-composer. It actually had nothing to do with Marty Robbins. This clip was merely for the benefit of the audience.
I do somewhat agree with you Jerry. I left it in there because it was a different spin on the songwriting story that I hadn’t heard. I suspect Hag probably told Ralph it sounded like a Marty Robbins style song and Ralph mentioned it again. Since it was straight from Merle’s mouth I included it. Thanks for watching and for a great comment sir!
@@Shakeyleg First, thanks for posting this! No doubt this is Haggard's song but when Marty opened up I realized that he could own it. I suspect Merle, in his head, heard Marty sing this song and thought, "That peckerwood Marty would make this song fly" and I would agree but it's such a good song and if a man's gotta eat he's gotta record... As a side note my best friend in my college years and I got to know each other around listening to "The Hag" and might have missed an 8:oo a.m. class or three drinking coffee and singing along with an album. What a great vid to post.
Actually, Bonnie didn't help write it. Bonnie's only role was to advise Merle not to add another verse but to leave it alone. So he did, and he gave her co writing credit for her advise.
Yes I agree! I do the Haggard Hot Shots on my channel with that very idea in mind. I put old commercials in there and other silliness. The feeling that just for a minute these fine musicians are still with us. Great comment!
Merle Ronald Haggard and Martin Dale Robbins....Heaven is a better place with them... Thankful my dad had me listening to real country music in the 60s.... God Bless you boys and your families...
