To me, Toa Lhikan & Kikanalo are a symbol of a bygone era. Lhikan the last of the old guard, the last to use a chest gearbox, and the Kikanalo the last somewhat traditional Rahi beast. Metru Nui was already a flashback, but it was BARELY scratching this surface. It was a weird pinprick moment in time where I could just tell there was still SO much to learn from this theme, and it would all start unraveling into the beautiful insanity of the later years just after this.
I had that sort of feeling while building it, but wasn't positive if it was going to be the last we'd see of the gears and this style of Rahi. It's certainly bittersweet, but what a great way to put a bow on these styles of builds.
@@NickonPlanetRipple Man you give us such an emotional drift 🤣 Luckily your words are still valid for me since the Iruini and Norik in 2005 are somewhat memorial set based on Toa Metru, not very original to me.
"Faithful Matoran, Metru Nui needs you. A shadow threatens its heart. Prove yourselves worthy Toa and fear not. The Great Spirit shall guide you in ways that you could not imagine." At this point I feel obligated to provide a quote from each character
The two "new" weapon pieces used on the Kikanalo head are actually a rerelease of an exclusive part. The part was first released in certain copies of Bionicle: The Game, where it was called the Chronicler's Staff. It shares a lot of design elements with the blade used for Takanuva's staff, so I guess you're supposed to imagine it unfolding into the Staff of Light once Takua is transformed into a Toa.
It also appears as the HUD for the game where it shows your elemental energy and health meters. I remember being really confused when getting this set back in ‘04 cause I only remember that part from the game itself since I didn’t get a physical piece
By far my favorite set from childhood. I can’t tell you how many times I built and rebuilt this. It got to the point where I was able to assemble the entire thing from memory. Might need to find one…
@@AllOutBrick Yeah, not sure how it even happened now lol. It was a UK seller - the set itself was only 40 pounds ($55)! Then again I can't find the Turaga or the last two Bohrok I need for a decent price so I guess I spent all my luck
@@Eric-pg6qc nice, but try getting totes of pieces, because I was able to get him and the combiner set for ultimate dume (exclusive helmet and the 4 titans) all in a tote for $40
@@AllOutBrick yeah the story is pretty bad but the titan sets where cool, the toa designs where interesting albeit strange, the visorak where great army builders and the biggest bionicle system play set. Not to mention caught up in a dream! Say what you want about 2005 but it was a pretty good year.
@@TheCakesCup26 toa designs were weird, but they are meant to be Toa-Rahi combos. Do they look like Rahi: not at all. They just look like ugly Toa, and have no bestial elements. If they got Barraki treatment, they wouldve been far superior.
I still want this set so badly. As a kid, I always thought the red and gold of Lhikan and his kanohi Hau were incredible. One of these days I've got to get my hands on it.
I try and watch as much Bionicle related content I can, in hopes Lego notices, and sees there is indeed demand for Bionicle products, and we get Bionicle Gen 3.
Love the dedication. Who knows, maybe they'll throw Bionicle fans a bone sooner or later, but I think the failure of G2 and lack of constraction puts us in a hole. Fingers crossed
Let’s hope that Gen 3 is just Gen 1’s universe. Maybe a ONE medium full retelling of the entire story with a big budget first, though, then more story. Either far future stuff, prequels in the MU, or a sequel. We DO need endings to the unfinished serials’ stories though.
@@Luka1180 I would change a few things still. Streamline this and that, and get rid of some of the nonsense in the extended lore. But the main beats would all be there.
Lhikan was my favourite toa back in 2004, his design was just awesome for me, it was like Tahu but gold. Glad I could get this set sealed for 40$ from a friend
The head molds for the Kikanalo were both reused and new, interestingly. The piece was originally made in 2003 to come with Bionicle: The Game, representing the Chronicler's Staff. But it didn't appear in a standard retail set until this one.
The titans this year were a bit of a mixed bag, but this one is definitely one of the best in Bionicle and Lhikan is a great figure to have too! I really like this one.
I got this set for Christmas as a kid we hen he came out, and is one of my all time favorite sets I own. Lhikan is my favorite character, glad he got a great review!
The old parts use alongside true technic pieces is what made Bionicle. It was Legos fault for going for new parts for every single character in future sets.
Always wanted this one and might get him on Bricklink here soon. He's just such a great model and character, and the lore he adds to Jallers Hau is very intriguing (convinced that particular Hau is cursed as everyone who wears it seems to die at some point) hope he doesn't run too high price wise but even if he does I'd say he's worth it. The Last of the old generation of Toa of the City of Legends.
I used to have this when I was a kid. My first bionicle set after I saw the mask of light. I have rediscovered a very important part of my childhood, feels nice.
Man what a great set, had this for over 15 years and its one of my favourites. You don't have to keep Kikanalo displayed with Toa Lhikan either, it works with any Metru build. I keep it displayed with Nokama for a more canon-accurate look. The muted colours actually work in its favour because there's nothing that causes its colour scheme to clash with the other Toa. Something to note is that Kikanalo's head is kept on a singular ball joint and that does wear out over time as the head is pretty heavy. A CCBS friction joint could help a lot with that. The ball joint pieces that hold the arms can break at the top as its just a single axle holding it in place and if you're playing with it as much as I did you'll probably break it. I recommend swapping it out for a CCBS joint piece.
This was always my favourite set, I think it also came out at the peak of my Bionicle fling. Might have also been due to Toa Lhikan proving to be the best toa story wise.
A top 5 set as well, love the character and have a distinct memory of picking this up at a toys r us in Texan with my granny, great memories, great set, cheers
I got my second Toa Lhikan figure for 7€ along with second Umbra set. Lhikan was my most hyped bionicle toy when I was kid. I saw the toyfair pictures of him in the summer of 2004 and wanted him so bad. Luckily got him for Christmas that year. Now I have another one of him and just play with him while watching your reviews.
In all the many, many, MANY Bionicle sets I built as a youth, only 2 remain on my shelf today. Toa Lhikan and Turahk. Everything else eventually got broken down for parts in my own creations. Years later, when everything got passed down when I grew up, these two persisted as that small connection to my childhood
I would love to see some size comparisons in future reviews or just a group shot of the entire line of figures! But i'm not sure if you guys deconstruct the figures after the review.
Most times the figures are deconstructed. When I go to build the combinations they're disassembled and then when I disassemble the combination they're all fully apart again
This was one of my favorite sets when I was a kid!!! Just rebuilt likhan last night and today I’m gonna try and see if I have all the parts for the kikanalu still!
How appropriate for a double Mata Nui Monday to have a double feature set lol. Great set, and a small thing I dig with it is how they did the Kikanlalo's hands, though I wish they added an actual end to its tail
The little claw on the hands adds a nice extra boost, they really did a fantastic job with the Kikanalo. The tail didn't bother me at all, but I agree that it's less complete than tails we've seen in the past
I remember when I first saw Legends of Metru Nui, I thought Lhikan was Jaller as a toa and that it was set in the future (I was 8 when I saw it), it was until G2 started when I found out that Lhikan and Jaller were separate characters
The new weapon part in the Kikanalo head I think originally only came with certain copies of the mask of light video game. But this was the 1st set it was widely available.
reminds me of set 8990 Fero & skirmix(that i have) which is a raptor/rex looking beast with a toa rider(well humanoid that would fit). sure there is no jaw to the beast but considering that its a "rhino" in all but shape(rex vs tank of a horse) that is fine/ok. and this definitely counts as a titan set....all box sets are....cept ones that are smaller than a borok canister and next wave will have six(and the little guys were a nice build)
The piece for kikonahlo’s head was present in the mask of light video game it came in the box (it was takua’s staff in the game and if you were to unfold it it makes takanuva’s light staff)
Btw this just came to mind why there isn’t a movie about the toa inika it would be cool like a more dark bionicle movie with a second part when they become toa mahri
This is My favorite Bionicle Set Ever! Toa Lhikan is my favorite character in Bionicle's story, and while the kikanalo does have a boring color scheme, I think it's one of the best builds of the 2004 titans!
Interestingly, even if both of them appear in one set, Lhikan and the Kikanalo are similar to Catwoman and Harley Quinn, in that they are never shown together in the story. The piece on Kikanalo's head you're talking about is often referred to as the "Chronicler Staff", because it was originally packaged with "Bionicle: The Game" in 2003 before being released here. This set marks the debut of a non-metallic shade of "Sand Yellow" in Lhikan's armor, and is the second appearance of the Metru knee armor in silver. Despite there being a lot of muted colors in this set, some pieces such as the Technic 7M wing piece are exclusive to this set in that color. This is the second of seven appearances of the Metru leg pieces in black and supposedly the final set ever to contain the Metru shoulder armor piece, as well as the Rahkshi foot in black. At the same time, this is the debut of the Metru Nui Matoran torso in silver and the Rahkshi leg in dark stone. This is the first of only five sets to contain the hand socket piece in medium stone, three of which I have. Similarly, it's also the first of five appearances of the double socket piece in Metru red. It is one of only two sets released in 2004 to have the Bohrok eyes in transparent red, along with being part of the serpent head in a Knights' Kingdom II set (8780) from that year. Additionally, this is one of only four sets to have a Technic 15M beam in black and is the last Bionicle set to have the chest armor introduced with the Toa Nuva. But it isn't the last appearance of that piece as a whole....
I was lucky enough to get this set from a friend recently, he gave me this, Makuta, Hydraxon and Gadunka all for $32, best purchase ever just because I talked to him after 10 years If he still had those sets xD
Red Star maybe ruined his death, BUT, i honestly accepted the Red Star as a zombie maker. We could have had brought back Lhikan back for more adventures WITHOUT using alternate dimensions. Seriously, i would have preferred if they were only exclusive to Takanuva and Vezon.
easily one of my favorite sets I ever had. i almost always ended up taking apart sets to make my own stuff, not this one though it just seemed perfect.
The weapon part on the head wasn't strictly 100% new. I think it was new in set form but you actually got one labelled as a chronicler's staff with the PS2 version of Mask of Light.
I think the set is great but the only thing that makes it somewhat bad is the Kikanalo as it looks very robotic for something that’s supposed to be an animal. I think they could’ve added some brown to the color scheme
This is an amazing review, but it the way you had Lhikan hold his Swords damaged my soul slightly. His hands have a slit at the end, and if you point his hands down you can insert his swords the correct way.
I feel like this set is part 2 of a “Takanuva Trilogy” of sorts, where LEGO packaged a special Toa character with a mount so they could jack up the price over the other canister sets. I feel like it’s the most obvious here, since Lhikan and Kikanalo never appear together in the story. The third one is 2007’s Lesovikk (which could’ve been the best one if not for all the lime joints)
So I never saw in his instructions how to attach his board to his feet, but is really having his foot sunk in how its suppose to look like it feels like it make more sense to attach to the soles of his feet instead of his ankle.
I know this is not important to the video but Are you going to review the G2 sets because I want to see you compare Tahu master of fire with toa lihkan because of the lava board’s.
Lol imagine if he had an axle piece coming out of his front bottom part to secure to the mount 😂😂 I think parents would have some problems with that design lol
Always thought this was a really strange set for them to make. Lhikan has nothing to do with the Kikanalo in the movie. Little me always wished they'd released Lhikan alone as his own set.
I hated when they started using the color gold in more regular sets, obviously I don't hate the color, it's just that before, when a set had that color, it gave the feeling that it was a luxurious and special set
Perhaps I'll feel the same down the line, but up to this point gold is a rare thing to come by in Bionicle sets. Easily can get to that overused point though
I’m pretty sure you’re suppose to attach the swords to the feet with pins and an axle connector? I remember having him as a kid and I’m pretty sure that’s how it was?
