This was my first "big" set I saved up for myself, when I was a kid, so it has a special place in my heart. Great to see it reviewed here. I actually collected most of the theme (all but 2), and all the animals actually contained exclusive prints, which is pretty cool.
This set has a lot of emotional value to me. My bubbe bought me this when I was 7 and I absolutely love it. I still have all the pieces I'm sure but it's completely destroyed. My crabs claw is broken but I put it in my moc always in honor of my grandma. Thank you so much for doing this review and letting me see it again, and showing off the play features so well. I should try to rebuild the squid, the interior is iconic.
I remember this set! So much nostalgia... Best Present from Christmas 2007 ever. My favorite part of the whole set was posing the Giant Squid into grappling the submersible.
Story time:! This is weird. So i just sold this set actually because i had gotten an extra one online and i decided to put it on ebay thinking no one would buy it and not 2 days later Jang posts a review. how weird is that.
Im assuming this is going right into one of your underwater areas? I remember always wanting this set as a kid.... and the squid looks so much better than I imagined it would.
I much prefer these over the Atlantis sets! My younger half brother and I had a few of these sets, this one especially. I distinctly remember his dad taking us to TRU to pick up a LEGO of any size to build while we waited at his work in the employee lounge, since out babysitter at the time were away and he couldn't find a backup in time. Since it was so big, we only built the minisub and minifigures, then shoved it all back into the box when he was taking us home. We built it at home, but over a year or two, we took it apart for pieces and tossed the rest of the pieces into a big LEGO bin. Good times. Maybe my nostalgia is the reason I prefer Aqua Raiders, but I really like the color scheme and theme. Fighting giant sea creatures while trying to explore and search the ocean floor for treasures? Personally, I prefer that to finding key stones to unlock some wacky portal or something. I would love it if they renewed Aqua Raiders, although they should renew the Pirates theme soon as well. This time, with ships that look proper. They are always so lazy with ships, except with the Imperial Flag Ship (although they were still too lazy to add a lateen...)
Agreed - the color theme of this theme is great. Much like the older Aquazone sets which were equally great I think :-) Sounds like you had some good memories with this one! :-)
Oooh, this brings me back! :D I really want this now. The base isn't closed up and has many gaps but the interesting shapes and design makes up for it in my opinon. And that squid! It must be one of the most creepy and dark things Lego has released. xD I love it!
This, to me, is the ultimate in terms of that older "yellow" Aquazone/Divers/Deep Sea Mission/Aqua Raiders aesthetic. As much as I LOVE Atlantis, that has a more fantastical feel that makes it stand out from the crowd. In terms of this slightly more subdued, grounded look, I think Aqua raiders is pretty great.
Nice review! The black round bushing kinda brick is actual lego! It was used in the 90's technic sets, it snaps over a technic pin connector! I remember it from a 90's technic fire engine for a catrol! I've got a few of those :) nothing of importance, just felt to let you know!
Always liked this based upon how it looked in the catalogs or in the store. But now I nust say that this set is awesome. My highlight are the squid and the little door build.
12:38 That *is* a LEGO piece! It's called Technic Hub / Handle 1 x 1. Produced between 1995-2006. www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=424&idColor=11#T=C&C=11
Wow I got this set as a gift from my Uncle. It was the first set I got that had one of those rubber tipped missile launchers so I thought it was amazing. Great memories- thanks for reviewing older sets too!
It's a really nice set - I've always liked the underwater/diver themes - the classic Aquazone is still one of my favorites. However, these sets come close I think :-) I really like the sub-launch play function and the interior of the main base is really cool I think! The fact that there is beanies for the divers when they are inside is actually pretty cool - gives it a nice touch of realism I think! The squid is cool :-D How on earth did you manage to get all the figs to move so similarly? I'd love to see the stand you use! Thank you for a very nice review and keep up the great work!
12:46 actually that is a lego piece, a set that I can 100% say those came from is the sentai fortress from exo-force, I believe you get a good amount of those pieces.
That piece you mentioned *is* Lego, it's just very uncommon www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=424&idColor=11#T=S&C=11&O={%22color%22:11,%22iconly%22:0}
just a heads-up, that little black cylindrical piece that came extra to the set actually IS a lego piece, just an incredibly uncommon and obsolete one that's been out of production since 2006. Part number 424 (or 6221), it only came in seven different sets during its run.
Awesome! I used to have the entire Aqua Raiders collection at the time! The sea creatures included in these sets where quite amazing, but the giant squid was really one of my favorites! I wished I kept all of the sets... oh well. Hope you will review all of the Aqua Raiders sets in the near future, thanks Jang!
I've always wanted for you to review this set because of that Giant Squid, witch was my second favorite creature of this line, first would be the Tiger shark. Awesome review as always!
I have no nostalgia of this set but here are my thoughts, this is one of the best small submarines I have ever seen, I love the monster and I love the guns.
I used to have this! I loved it, I also loved sharks so the Aqua Raiders shark was my favorite LEGO item I had at the time besides my X-Wing I had then.
Cool set. Feels like something of a spiritual successor to the Neptune Discovery Lab. It's not nearly as picturesque, but I like the more detailed interior it's packing. Gives the minifigs more space to do their actual work, research, and all that. The squid is awesome too.
