This was the first Lego Expert set I bought. Having not built with Lego for a very long time, this set heralded my return to the hobby, so it holds a very special place in my collection.
Hmm, this set actually really impressed me. I've been impressed by the modulars before, but this one really tops them all. Great part use, decent playability, awesome looks, great great new parts/rare colors :D This set really has it all! As for the pool table, I built one myself. Interesting to see how they did the pockets On this one. They achieved a smaller table, but it's a little more boxy and lego-y, if you will.
I'd suggest also reading reviews (and searching Jang's channel for reviews of those sets). But as for my opinion, I think the cinema palace is good because it is a corner building which is good for a lineup of the modular buildings. In addition, all the modulars have good building techniques and offer a learning experience each time. However, if you were to buy another modular, I would suggest the pet shop. It has two separable buildings, which I feel have more attention of exterior detail (but the interiors have less going on due to parts count having to be kept down). I own that modular (as well as 3 others) and I can say from experience that I would prefer that to the cinema (I do not own the cinema, but I have seen it up close and personal on several accounts). Again, I emphasize, all of the modulars are great sets, and are a wonderful addition to any lego collection : )
I consistently find myself coming back to this review in specific. I don't know why I just feel as if it's the epitome of JANG, very objective way of displaying the set and its features, all while showing JANG's personal opinion on how the set was created, as you can tell how fond he is of the architecture styles in this set. I like this review a lot as well as the set!
11:20 That is just the best part. To not only make a super detailed set, but also a story to go with it, that is just amazing from Lego. That smuggling "route" is awesome!
It seems Lego retires their sets way too soon. Development costs have already been spent. New Lego fans come along every day, or old ones that grew up with it and are getting back into it. So many awesome sets are retired now and have to be found in the aftermarket for 3, 4, 5, times the cost or more. If you think Lego is already expensive just try to buy a set that has been retired for a few years. This, is my biggest disappointment with Lego. Re-release those old sets Lego!
yes this is a list of sets i want them to re-release, *ALL* the modular buildings old trains lots & lots of city sets *ALL* LEGO ideas sets series 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 CMF *ALL* the fun at the ____ sets lots of the good creator 3 in 1 sets thats about it
So the Pool player and the Darts player make the candy upstairs, (drop it off the building) Smuggle it inside the barbershop, then inside the pool hall, and just so they can eat it?? Why would they not just make the sweets and eat them? I have this Theory that the Lady in Red is actually getting on the detectives good side, so he does not Suspect her. Then she makes the Cookies, the Darts player (all ready on the verge of getting caught, from the wanted poster) smuggles them to the pool hall , and the Pool player pays them good money for the cookies. But when solving the crime time comes around, There is only evidence to point to the dart player, (and even if there is evidence against the lady in red, the detective ignores it), and She gets away scotch free. Oh, and Also, the Poll player just thinks the darts player makes the cookies, so when he is caught eating them, and taken to jail, he can only squeal on the darts player. Also, when the darts player is arrested, he is bailed out (through a intermediary) by the women in red, and then they run off together. But that's just a theory, a Lego theory.
I think the flower guy is actually smuggling the goods away from the building from the back, not bringing it to the building. the flower cart is just a disguise for the smuggling scheme to get the goods to other places
hmm, that actually makes a lot of sense!...(except the flower cart is not really part of my theory.) I just mean the smuggling root from the back yard to the barber shop to the pool hall is odd, (if there only making cookies for them selves) So I created this women in red theory to help explain that... but in the context of smuggling them the other direction to the flower cart, and there being more consumers...makes sense and solves the same problem. :] cool thought.
Why can't I make such awesome sets like Lego designers??? They truly are "Master Builders" and I consider you one as well jang, thanks for all the awesome videos you make!
@@nintendoenthusiast2122 Not retired, just old and lazy. Yes, Lego sets limits on production, but not so strict you can't find one if you look for it. What's really crazy is that Legos are made in Mexico...
I need to stop watching your videos. Every time I do, a hole appears in my bank account as you push me over the edge of what I was thinking to get. Think this is a great looking set with a ton of details and features. thanks again for another great review and another hole in my bank account.
Very cool, the modular buildings keep on getting more detail every year! I found this set in a French toy store before Christmas but they were not being sold on shelves yet so I got the Parisian Restaurant instead, I think both are awesome though!
Wait a Second? If the kitchen for Baking illegal treats is in the same building as the detectives office then?, The Detective could've smelled the guy baking, plot twist: The detective is a dirty cop Just kidding
Does anybody else see the Sweeny Todd reference? A bakery/kitchen above a barber shop! goodies made there, perhaps pies? That spells Sweeny Todd all over!
learning this was a prohibition era scene merley bowlderizing the booze with candy makes me wanna see a lego breakign bad videogame but also equally bowlderized and legofied. like i dunno instead of peopel OD'ing on meth they cna get crashes form sugar rushes. and gus actually sels salad instead of chickenXD who would want to see lego city police to a brekaing bad esque theme?:D
I like the set a lot, however the theme is in my opinion superfluous. I personally think it adds a "playability" factor to the set. I don't think of the modular series sets as a set a child would play with (it would be awesome, but the price is what uneases me.) Just my opinion.
Gee Zed Eee Power This set has almost 2300 pieces, the price for piece is actually lower than any Lego city set, but to build with such detail the piece count has to be high.
i have a MOC idea: a SIFI convention, you could make it using your storm trooper minifigs as statues, you could also hang micro fighters to the roof representing models of those vehicles . just an idea:)
When I was a kid LEGO was a huge boost to your imagination because you were not only able to take blocks and turned them into a water closet and a dome you actually had to because there was no such thing as a water closet in the set. Me and my friend combined them with the good old GI Joes. We have built them forts, ships cannons and all kinda things and yes a water closet. Now items like those are all ready made for you. Yes it looks nice but it's also a less creative toy.
Csongor Andras For that, lego has junior, classic, duplo and other themes with less textures and forms. However, I find it difficult for the parents to buy a less-textured toy, when you can buy the more detailed one. Also, don't think the details turn out to be that less creative, I'd love to build that. Certainly is not as intuitive as you may think, maybe a little, but I think that makes it a lot more fun and immersive.
I mean, I like this set and I think it's very good, one of the better modular buildings (although I only like a few of them, I get more of the small ones), but I just don't get what all the fuss around it is. It might just not be my style, but my favorite (excluding assembly square, which I don't count because it's meant to combine them all) is the Parisian Restaurant, and my second is most likely the Brick Bank.
Just finished putting this together after buying it based on this very review! I've got to say, you really don't understand how nice this set is just watching the video, even more so than with any other modular building. You've really got to have this thing in your own two hands to experience just how delightful it is, especially the interior. It's so easy to appreciate the immense attention to detail, and the detective's office on the second floor has endeared me more than anything else I've ever built with Lego. While the Parisian Restaurant is still my favorite modular building as far as EXTERIOR goes, this one really takes the cake for its lovingly crafted inside. Just enough light enters through the skylight for the detective's office to give it this really genuine film noir feel when you're peering in through the windows. Everything about this set oozes character, and I don't think I can understate how happy it makes me feel owning it.
The building looks a bit too American for me. I'm going for a more European look. However, as I'm going for 1940s European look, I bought this set nevertheless. The barber shop and a detective office totally have that 1940s vibe I'm looking for.
This will be the best set of 2015! Really enjoyed buildinf this set. So many great pieces in the set as well. Goes great with the other modulars. The Detectives office is the best room so far from any of the modulars. It has so much detail. Big big thumbs up from the Little Posties for this set!
I have the Parisian Resturaunt, and it is terrific, but this one will be on the market longer. It depend what you are using it for, if you want to buy one for Display, choose the Parisian Resturaunt, if you want one for Play, Choose the Detective's Office, want one for both, hold on and buy them both!
Hi Jang how are you, big fan of the channel as of recently. I just got into Lego and I Love it. I'm starting a Modular Building collection. I know I have started late lol. My QUESTION is $225 a good price to buy the Detective Office. Cabadian dollars
It's a little disappointing that Ace Brickman doesn't come with a fedora. That seems like an important accessory for a film noir style detective. The rest of the set is fantastic, though.
I have this and think he doesn't deliver straight to the pool hall because the detective's office has an opening window which can look straight over the back door. If he doesn't want to get caught, I think that was the obvious choice.
I love the color contrast. This set brings a little bit more unique features (and that is exactly why I love the modulars) Unfortunately, I started collecting them from the fire brigade up until the parisian restaurant (after the green grocer and obviously cafe corner got discontinued) But still, nice models. All of them are unique and I obviously respect LEGO for the effort they've put in into them. Thanks Jang for making this awesome review. Of course with sets like those, you will get an awesome review like this ;) I might be getting it along with the simpsons house since I have been saving money for a while. Great video like always, stay awesome!
Well, I'm sold. Third modular building that Jang's reviews have sold me on, and I'll probably be getting some I passed on before they go out of stock later this year. I absolutely can't skip a detective's office to go in my little Lego town! :)
