When you have more than 50 sets, storage is a huge issue. Don't be tempted to cobble together a solution. Start with strong shelving and new boxes to save lots of time and keep your sets looking good. Brook Johnson will show you how he stores his sets, shows you part of his Lego library, and tells you what is "retiring soon."

For storing my unopened sets, I've found IKEA IVAR shelves to be very useful. They are modular, in that you buy a few of the sides, then as many or as few shelves as you need, and the sides have a lot of inserts in them to allow you to position the shelves almost exactly where you need them to make the most efficient use of space. I order them by the height of the box and together in theme, so the really tall sets like the SSD and Ghostbusters sets go on the bottom shelf together, and as I go up, I store the shorter and shorter sets, again to maximise the use of space.

I really appreciate your organization! I'm currently dealing with a shortage of storage and display space. I have 2 closets full of boxes and shelves/display through out my home. I've been thinking about folding boxes flat to save space.

Let's not forget the effects of light---even led bulbs--- on the lithography of the box. If you've ever seen a collection with all the exposed sides bleached of color, you will cry. Well, maybe not you. Inside, opaque, acid-free containers is the way to go.

It would look nice if you would paint the wooden front of your shelf in grey. Merry X-mas from Berlin.

Super usefull input, thank you! Do you pay and particular attention on light and/or air condition in your storrage room? Obviously you store your boxes verticaly due to your space limitations: wouldn't you also prefer to keep them horizontaly in order to relieve those boxes from stress provided from the content if you would have that extra space?

Sunlight will fade boxes fairly quickly, so I never keep them near windows. Controlling the humidity keeps the seals from releasing, so I always try to keep my sets in a conditioned area. If your storage boxes are the same size and strong, they can be stacked vertically without any trouble. I often stack mine 4 high. The big problem is that I always want the bottom box. If you can store them horizontally, then that is much easier for access.

Wow,boxes of the same size are the same size.Nothing to do with Lego at all,it's a commodity.Money,money,money!

Do u put the moisture absorption packs in your boxes to prevent any moisture from getting on the sets

Great video. What would be disadvantage, other than space if you store this biggers sets laying down so that the content wound not be pushing sides out on the bottom? I have smaller collections and just toke one medium size set out, it was laying for 10 years and it is ok. Thanks

Thanks for the helpful advice. That really helps as i have a current crisis about storage. Would it be possible to share the exact dimension and things needs as I am not very handy with those things but I am going to try. Also can you give me some advice for the best way for shipping lego sets like what size of box to use, where to get them, how to put it what padding to use? is bubble wraps good ???
@Brickpicker
@Brickpicker 7 лет назад
My shelves are 8 feet long x 2 feet wide. I leave 20 inches of space between each shelf. I buy boxes online from Staples, but there are many good box suppliers. Wrapping in bubble wrap is good. Never use the big air pillows. I normally use newspaper or cut pieces of cardboard for padding.

Do you see any decrease in resale value to storing Lego boxes flat on sets being displayed? Obviously not a UCS set or an Architecture box but Modulars or other sets (Ninjago, etc) that my kids may be playing with.

Hi Greetings from Panama I'm a Lego Star Wars and Modulars collector mostly big sets and UCS probaby around 200 sets and counting ive been collecting for the last 5 years since i started building again. do you happen to store back sets that youve built in the past and as you run out of display space how do you stored them is it in their original boxes or differently? would love to know how other AFOLs approach this

How do you store your sets inside the standardizes boxes? Do you stack them inside, or do you just store them all on 1 level?

How would you transport the boxes for a move? I have about 15 unopened sets that are fairly large (Expert CITY sets for example). What kind of bin would you recommend?

Does acid or other chemicals in the cardboard boxes in which the Lego is shipped badly affect the lego box over time? I have some lego I’d like to store long term in it’s box and wanted to use the shipping for for extra protection but am afraid that it will over time damage the lego box. Is it always best to store the lego boxes with not external paclaging? Thanks!

I have about 60 sets that are very old, and I would like to ship them from my old house to my current location. What is the best way to ship them? Should I ship them all in one giant box, or all separately? Your suggestion would be most appreciated. thank you

please dont bei offended, but toy Investment is kind of an ugly Business,no matter if it is Lego, Marvel legends, Transformer or Pokemon cards. i feel sorry for the poor parents that try to get the stuff for their kids one day.
@kapliger
@kapliger 6 лет назад
Hannes Karp kids won't buy these sets. It's for the adult market of Lego. The playsets which the kids want usually stay in an affordable range once they retire. And play sets often get reissued so I don't see a problem there.

One thing people need to consider is that if it wasn't for folks investing / collecting Lego's etc, the chance of finding products that are up to 20+ years old whole and complete or even sealed would be close to zero, the way i see it, collectors actually keep the legacy lineup alive, prices might be steep but not always, be grateful for people doing this sort of stuff, trust me it isn't easy, takes a lot of time and resources to shelve and store these things, speaking from experience.
