I suspect that the various factions which use a lion on their coat of arms are all the same kingdom, but under different monarchs. Contrary to popular belief, medieval coats of arms didn't represent noble houses or factions per se. They could represent entire kingdoms, but mainly represented individuals. So while members of the same family would have similar colours or elements on their coats of arms (like a lion, a dragon, or a black falcon...) the actual design would change as each individual came to power. Its thus entirely possible that the different lion shields each represent a different generation of the reigning house of Lionne. The change from red to blue could just mean that the king of that sub theme wanted to honour their mother's house in the choice of colours for their coat of arms as well as their father's. Maybe a black falcon princess married into the house of Lionne, and brought some blue heraldry with her for example.
This series never fails to impress! The old magazines and short comics/stories that you find bring in so much lore to classic castle! I feel as though most castle fans aren't even aware of all this old worldbuilding that was released in fairly obscure magazines.
That’s why I do what I do! My goal is to tell the stories of Lego themes that probably no one knows! Glad you enjoy it! It crazy how there are so many bits and scraps of lore out there. I will say though a good majority of this was never confirmed by Lego. When it comes down to it I look at every image and scrap of lore and make a conclusion from it. I try to only say stuff I can back up! But at the same time this could all not be true and really some of the stuff could just be Lego rebooting every little bit. But I like to believe that it is true!
When playing with the (then new) castle sets in the mid-80s we always considered the Lion Knights (never called them Kreuzritter = Crusaders in Germany) superior to the Black Falcons, mostly because of the majestic 6080 castle with its 4+4+4 garrison. Looking back I have to admit that the darker color scheme and underdog character of the Falcons were pretty cool as well.
Tavern talk is the best series on your channel. I’m Australian but I prefer crusaders and black falcons over lions and eagles. If LEGO wasn’t so PC LEGO would still call them crusaders
love the longer tavern talk. i have always assumed that sir richard is the lego version of richard the lionheart, who was invovled in the third crusade and was later captured and imprisoned.
Thank you! Length of tavern talks always depend on the content I find! But they definitely are more interesting! Oh yeah same! I definitely always assumed the same. If you look at other Uk Lego castle stuff from the 90s there are a ton of name changes over there that go with real life legends, like majisto being Merlin!
Okay, can you do one about the black knights next? I always get them confused with the Royal knights and the black falcons. Anyway, fantastic video as always!
Really enjoy your tavern talk. Especially love all the pictures you prepared for us (catalogues, idea book etc) and deep dive into the stories behind them. Keep up the great work!
@@BrickingUpBrad Yeah. Your tavern talk is very informative and enjoyable. Really appreciate your great work! 👍🏻👍🏻. By the way I didn’t know who Sir Richard was until I watch your video 😄
😂😂 I’m literally working on that video now!! Have the script done but just need to make it. The release date all depends if that new majisto gwp happens. But I will be getting it out by the end of the month!
@@JLM1883 You can find it right here on: www.lego.com/en-us/product/lion-knights-castle-10305 Also lets be honest at this point lego castle isn't historically arcuate, its more of its own fantasy world.
@@dylanwhite3383 honestly I could see Lego doing it. But honestly they arnt is iconic in peoples minds as the pink crown knight was. But I have a feeling if Lego does more castle figs, they are going to focus on more classics because of how well the other ones are doing!
What’s your opinion on what the real life inspiration is for each knight faction? I know lion knights are probably England, any thoughts on black falcons? Germany?
@@BrickingUpBrad haha that’s all good. I was thinking German possibly as the logo seems somewhat similar to me to the Teutonic flag/German crest maybe but that’s sort of a reach
Yeah I have said that in a few other videos! Didn’t know if I should say it here or not. But I may have messed up how to say it. I looked it up before I recorded and that’s how it told me to say it but I may have done it wrong!
I have an idea for how all the Lion factions can be put into one Kingdom: The Feudal System. The Lion Kingdom is so large that it's divided into different Lordships. Each Lord/Lady is responsible for maintaining their own territory, including arming and training their forces. This leads to each Lord to have their own variations of the kingdom's Lion crest. When the Monarch in charge of the whole Kingdom calls the Lords to muster their armies for war, each House can can differentiate between each others troops due to the differences in heraldry. This allows you to take your favorite Lion faction, make them the 'Royal' forces from the King/Queen's Capital, and use the leaders of all the other Lion factions as Lords of their own territories. Replacing their crowns with helmets and hairpieces. Just a little suggestion for those who love army and world building! Which Lion faction would you choose to make the Royal one? Are there rivalries, grudges or friendships between the different Lordships? What will you do with King Mathias, the only Lion themed character from Knight's Kingdom 2? All these questions and more are up to you to answer! What stories will you build? 😀
Wait so the Black Knights directly replaced the Black Falcons? Are the Black Knights their successors? Did those loyal to the Black Knight form the faction after his death?
Your skill rises to new heights! Not only did you tell the history, but also the story of the Lion Knights! If you'll permit me, I'd like to make a similar series called Tavern Tales where I tell the stories and legends of castle through animations!
Thank you! I really trie to tell these stories with what Info I can find! That sounds like a really cool idea! I definitely recommend doing it! Probably would do a different name then tavern tales though!
Love a good Tavern Talk! I didn’t expect to learn something on this, but the details of the Amber incident and the faction unions were new to me. Thanks!
Yeah the factions joining a never realized till looking at some magazines really closely. When it comes down to it. It’s just Lego not being able to make an actual plan, so stuff was all over the place like names.
@@BrickingUpBrad for sure! I’m convinced that half of the “lore is just different people writing promotional copy in several different languages with no oversight from TLG as far as official story goes.
It's possible that the point where the Lion Knights and the Forestmen were allies is a reference to the end of Robin Hood. In most stories, Robin was a friend of King Richard and fought alongside him in the Crusades. Robin fought Richard's brother John and his knights until Richard returned, at which point they were at peace. In real life, John outlived Richard and did become King. I would guess that the timeline with the two factions likely mirrors the Robin Hood story: they fight the knights while Richard is away, align with them when Richard is back, and are back to feuding after Richard died.
From my research they are never Allie’s but in the new castle they are definitely a bit friendly. (As In the lion knights arnt trying to capture them on sight.)
I love doing them! Glad you enjoyed it! I honestly can’t wait to do fright knights lore! There is so much cool stuff there! My goal is to do all the pirates stuff first. Then black knights. Then dragon masters - fright knights!
I would really like to know what they can bring to the table if the peace is over and the war begins... what does every faction has ? How big are there armies...
I would love to hear your take on the Lego world as a whole. It’s my personal theory that all the themes are connected. My theory is that the castle world is the same world as the adventure themes such as power miners, Atlantis, ultra agents, and even hidden side. I’d like to think that the Castle world evolved into the lego city we know today, with the adventure themes part of lego city. In the same vein, it’s cool to think about City evolving into the Space Age. Maybe it starts with alien conquest as first contact, then evolved into all the other space themes. All in all, I think it would be awesome to see a tavern talk about connections between the castle world and modern lego city. Like the ghosts from castle became the hidden side ghosts and stuff like that
What I like to think is that if a kingdom doesn't show for a while the kingdom was removed from the mortal plains or was just low on soldiers so they lay low and build up a army again
