What I really love about the 2021 minifigure selection is that the mini figures aren’t exclusive making the new tie fighter perfect for army building

The 2021 version is perfect for minifig scale. Reference it to people around ties in hangars and stuff. I love it.

I actually like the 2021 one better, the cockpit looks rounder, and it feels like a nicer scale, the 2018 one is just way too large compared to a minifig, whereas the newer one is cheaper, feels more in-scale for a one seated fighter, and is inifinitely more massable and really easier to integrate in MOCs because of the smaller size, while still maintaining a high level of accuracy

Love both TIEs, but the Solo TIE takes it for me. Incredible figures and build, and on sale it was 100% worth it to me. That being said I love TIEs and will be buying this new one.

Ok hear me out. Take the cockpit of the 2021, remove the wings on the 2018, put them together and bam you have a good tie fighter

You can't really say one is better than the other. They serve their own separate purposes. The 2018 model is better for getting one ship to display, but the 2021 model is better for collecting multiples to use for mocs or to build armies. Also, keep in mind that the 2018 model is double the price of the 2021 model.

To be honest, I think the new TIE Fighter is just slightly better - especially for its value. Also, is anyone else gonna modify it to try and recreate the waffle-toaster wing TIE Fighters from the Mandalorian?

Lego is knocking the vehicles out of the park. I love how Lego downsizes the TIE Fighter and Xwings in 2021. They scale really well with the recent Millennium Falcon and Razor Crest and Slave I.

Nice comparison. Considering the fact that you already made a drop test with the 75211 set, I suggest that you show us a drop test with the 75300 set to see which one is the most solid. I think it will definitely conclude the comparison.

I like how you can just swap 2021 to interceptor just by getting wing off easly and placing custom made wings

The 2021 looks kind of small, but I have to give it credit for one crucial thing: the cockpit actually looks round. Yes it is still blocky, but it actually has the better, rounder, smoother shape. The wings are a little small but the design looks better. A spining disk on top really isn't enough to make a notable difference IMO.

Not going to lie, as someone who cant really spend much money on larger sets, and has limited space to display the sets, I love the smaller, compact design. It has relatively decent army building figures, plus a model which looks amazing, even for its size. Just wish that single piece was colored correctly xD

the Solo set has great minifigures. I do think the new one is more accurate and in scale. Also I think that the 2021 version holds a better value.

I didn't think the size difference was so drastically reduced however I think it's better overall, I like the 2018 version looks a lot closer to the UCS counterpart. I don't own it and the value is clearly there but I'm gonna get the new one because the price is perfect.

I will always prefer the solo tie fighter just because of the fact that I think it is overall a better set for minifigures and design (the new one is too small). It is also closer to minifig scale, as shown by the comparison that brickvault did with an actual minifigure scale tie fighter, showing that a minifigure accurate scale compared to the older 2018 set is basically the same size. And I like having my Lego Star Wars ships be in scale, which is why I'll have to buy the UCS Millennium Falcon eventually. I also bought 3 solo tie fighters when they were released, so I'm a little biased when it comes to my Lego tie fighters

Hey Ryan, just a suggestion for the channel. I know you used polls a lot before youtube got rid of them. You can still do polls in the community tab though, so if you want to keep doing polls, that's always an option

The window screen on the new tie fighter is using an old windscreen piece from the tie fighters from Rebels like the Tie Advanced Prototype or Darth Vader’s Tie Advance vs A wing

Honestly, I am in love with these new sets. Yeah they’re not Clone Wars, but if LEGO is trying to introduce a new scale for ships I see why they went with a safe option, even though it’s not what fans wanted most. Mainly, I love that you can get a X-Wing and TIE Fighter for less than $100. I mean they’re the essential Star Wars ships and they shouldn’t be almost $200. I like the TIE Fighter and I don’t believe that bigger is better with these sets, so personally I think the 2021 TIE is better, and I feel the similarly with the X-Wing. I prefer the 2021 X-Wing because it has similar size, lower price, better figures, and my favorite part is the cleaner look it has; with the wings being much less bulky and solid white. If you disagree with me then you are wrong and I am right because I am.

The old tie fighter is a movie accurate tie. The new one is like a rebels tie fighter

Great review! Very helpful in deciding which to buy third party after market. Great attention detail issues I wasn’t aware of from other reviews like the blue pieces on 2018 and the inner wing designs on the 2021. I went with the 2018 aftermarket for $56 on eBay sans mini figs (great value considering with inflation I got it for < original MSRP from 5 years ago). Worth it to me because I can just slap a generic TIE pilot in the cockpit and put it on display. One last thing maybe worth mentioning next time - minifig scale for adult collectors! The 2018 is much better in terms of realistic movie size and detailed pieces. But totally agree the 2021 might be a better value for a birthday party gift or just playing with the kiddos on the weekends. Great work man, thanks for making this!

Personally I really like both but I kind of actually prefer the new one. Its affordable and a great build. A small and stable build. Lego are technically targeting kids after all and this is a great buy for them because its not majorly expensive and its a really good build with decent figures. Is the 70 dollar 2018 version technically a bit more accurate to the movies? Maybe but its still close to minifig scale. Enough to trick yourself anyway and it doesn't matter when the build is amazing and a good price. At least imo. I can buy two of these if I want. I couldn't and wouldn't say that about a 70 plus dollar set. Edit: Hell I hope they keep up this tread of smaller (Yet not super small that its way of scale either) yet great and affordable builds. I would buy them all.

With the ball joint, you could always replace it with the normal clip piece used on the 2018 version

My favorite TIE Fighter is still the First Order Special Forces Tie Fighter. I just love the design with the red and the fact that it seats two figures is amazing.

The new Stormtrooper helmet has made me realise I love the Rebels Stormtrooper helmet.

Easy fix for the 2021 TIE Fighter's top hatch moving around too easily - replace the white single stud 4x4 tile and the two 2x1 grey flat plates with a 2x4 grey plate. The hatch piece will lock onto the studs securely and stop spinning.

I got the 2021 tie fighter for my birthday and I really like it, that was actully my first stormtrooper, and while the helmet doesn't turn very well I am still happy to have it

I love the 2021 tie fighter and X wing. A lego tie fighter or X wing just isn't worth more than $50 dollars. This is the correct size, price, and detail for a lego ship and kids can actually afford this.

I’m so glad I bought the Solo Tie Fighter, I used some vip points for it so it was even less than 70 bucks. I initially didn’t even care for the Tie Fighter, and just wanted it for the minifigs, but over time I’ve come to realize the Tie Fighter was the best part of the buy. 10/10 it’s THE Tie Fighter set.

Do the 2x1 hinges fit on the front and back of the 2021's winglets in place of the mismatching ball joint pieces? If so, I'm curious why they wouldn't just reuse those.

What MandR didn't think of is the 2021 tie was basically a bigger battle pack you can make a fleet of ties and get pilots and troppers

I like the little one honestly I think it works to scale especially with lego and if you had mocs it could be very easy to fit them in

The 2021 set clearly wins on design imo. - SNOT technique on the cockpit and wing struts looks way better than exposed studs - Stronger and more aesthetic wing attachment connection - Better detailing on the outside of the wings and the wing hubs - Inward-facing wing surfaces in all black with a cutout for attachment point instead of raised surfaces in varying shades of grey (this is probably my single biggest gripe with the 2018 model) - Despite being smaller, the 2021 cockpit has better interior detail - The 2021 set correctly uses green spring shooter missiles instead of incorrect red The only negatives about the 2021 set design are the ball joint connections on the front wing edges and the lack of friction on the top printed cockpit piece. The dark-grey ball joint honestly doesn't bother me much and looks like it could be easily replaced with medium grey clips. Similarly, I'm pretty sure the friction on the top printed cockpit piece could be corrected from what seems to be a single stud connection to an in-between stud connection.

I already own a 2018 TIE, and I recently ordered another one to convert into an interceptor. But I still might get one or two of these new ones, it’s a really sweet model and it’s still a great size to have with minifigures.

Again, the new X-Wing and TIE Fighter sets are just super fun to build and play with.

Honestly I think both these sets are good, but with the addition of a farmboy Luke they would be great.

I think the new one provides a better value considering that you could buy 2 for 7 dollars more than the old one but the old one is more visually appealing so I think it comes down to personal preference

2021 has the same cockpit window as the tie fighter from rebels, grand inquisitor experimental

I feel like design and displayability should be separate categories, because for things like this and the x wing, I feel like the design of the newer ones are probably more impressive because they get almost all the same features and details and bring them down to a smaller scale. Whereas the displayability is easily better on the larger models as they're more accurately scaled and do have more detail.

I think I’m going to get the newer TIE fighter, I enjoy the clone wars and building a clone army far more so 70$ is a lot for a TIE fighter in my opinion so 40$ is more justified in my view. The cheaper TIE is really good given the price

Honestly, lego should make the storm trooper helmets in a similar way they did darth vaders. small lines, smaller eyes, helmet wraps the head nicely, and over all scales well with a minifig.

The window pice on the 2021 Tie fighter is the same as the one on Yoda's Jedi Starfighter!

6:43 I'm confused. Why not just switch out those two pieces for the top hinge pieces? they cover the same amount of space. Just switch out the ball joint for a handle and clip.

Walmart has the 75300 set for sale in stores for $36, so I think it's honestly a lot better of a value and a lot more attainable especially for the price.

I really love the new tie fighter's design, it has its flaws, but overall the design is really good. I have a theory as to why it might have a nostalgic appeal to you, the build is much heftier in comparison to the 2018 fighter but it really reminds me of the tie fighter design of the Rebels show, The minifigures also echo this theory because the NIL-8 Droid was prominently featured in several episodes, maybe, just maybe they based it off of designs from a new Rebels sequel? Unlikely, but also it makes you think (:

The thing with the red and green laser bolts: In-universe, indeed, the laser bolts are green. However, In-universe also, the bolt cannon outlets are red. They are two red little round parts. So, that's reason why the bolts are red in the 2018 TIE and before. Yes, the bolts are green but the cannons are red. And I honestly prefer the red over the green because in display, it looks more accurate.

I like the newer tie fighter set better, because it has generic minifigures and has a cheaper price means it's easier to buy multiple of them and army build a fleet with it. The newer also has an old school 1980s original kenner toyline vibe which I quite like

I have the 2018 one and it’s one of my favourites. Ngl I do understand why people would buy the new one, as the 2018 one is now selling on eBay for something like 600 AUD (idk US market). But ngl the 2018 one is such a W in my books and displays excellently and goes well with the 2018 x-wing so if you’re willing to spend a hella lot of money I think it’s definitely worth it for the very expensive exclusive figs and really cool build (Pretty sure the Mudtrooper is going for something like 120 AUD now so not cheap)

The 2021 Tie has a targeted audience, great and cheap model for someone who doesn't own one or wants multiple. The 2018 one is obviously bigger and better looking for a more premium price. If you own multiple 2018 ones, then getting one or more of the 2021 ties would be unnecessary imo

2021 is accurate when it comes to the spring loaded shooters and plus I like the downsize with 2021

A great play feature for lots of set it weak points in certain places so that you can swoosh it around without it falling apart but can break it off without stressing the parts because kids will obviously crash it

I found out why the 2021 version uses ball joints instead of hinges; if it used hinges it would be an illegal connection. The connection on the hinges is slightly higher up than the connection on the ball joints, so if you replace the ball joints with hinges the plates will push against the black part of the solar panels and stress the hinge connections.
