LEGO Torsen Differential - How AUDI QUATTRO works

I was pretty blown away by the "Torsen Limited Slip Differential" and didn't really understand it. So I tried to build it with lego and got confused as it actually worked. The base principle is really simple, the hard part is to understand why it works as an open differential regardless its torque sensing and "locking" ability.

1:26 small correction: the power distribution is NOT 50-50 here. The SPEED is 50-50 when the diff locks. but the power is 90% on the left wheel, because this is the only place where the torque is since the other wheel is slipping. torque times speed is power.

Got me there I guess ;) But if the speed is 50/50, doesn't that also mean that the resistance of the diff and the right axle is equal to the resistance of the wheel that has traction?

Engineering Explained has a video where he explains torque distribution on open diffs vs LSD. It takes some time to get behind the principle. Short version, an open diff had always a 50/50 torque distribution and 100% locking diff is able to transfer all the torque to just one wheel. A Torsen, depending on the model, can do about an 70/30 split to either side.

The Hummer h1 and Hmmwv have front and rear Torsen differentials. Riding the break with decent pressure helps the Torsen lock up.

This is not a Torsen differential. You can see at 0:38 that during a curve the gears connected to the worms are not moving, and this means that the axle is fully locked (similar to a Detroit differential). A real Torsen will have movement of inside gears and worms during a curve. A real Torsen may be impossible to build with standard Lego pieces, but it may be possible if you put normal gears where you put your worms and move the worms on the same axles as the gears inside the differential.

Mechanically it's torsen differential but lego worm gears give too high ratios (worm gear and 24 teeth gear give ratio 24:1) so lego torsen always locks itself too easy when driven by motor. Even with worm gear and 8 teeth gear wheels ratio is too high (8:1) to prevent unwanted locking.

A road car will have a TBR in the range 2:1 to 5:1 so would get stuck if asked to do what this model is doing (without EDL). Also Audi have Torsen only as centre differential with open diffs on front and rear. Nice video editing skills though.
