And on top of the train wheels there is also variables like how the track was laid If using jointed rails that essentially butt up together and then bolted, that is commonly not perfectly straight so there will be slight lateral motion transferred to anything running on the tracks

It's called hunting oscillation. On full-size trains it typically occurs at around 55-65 mph and can be exacerbated by the use of jointed rail.

I think they already have those at amusement parks and stuff. I've also seen trackless "trains" driving around malls.

I recall riding a miniature hand powered minecart on a track at an amusement park when I was young, I can confirm that it was a lot of fun!

I don't know much about trains/railroads, but I do know rollercoasters. My guess is that the wobble problem stems from the articulating nature of the wheels (so it can go around corners). Am I off? Close enough?

@@hauntedshadowslegacy2826 it’s actually to do with the thermal expansion and contraction of the track, and the placement of the ties, and the coarseness of the gravel bed the ties are embedded in.

Speed wobble can get real nasty when bombing a hill on a skateboard. I nearly learned this one the hard way. 😬

@@hauntedshadowslegacy2826 What's most likely happening here is hunting oscillation. Since in a curve, the turning radii of the inner and outer tracks are different, the distance the wheels travel is different. But since the wheels are on the same axle, this would be a problem. Therefore, engineers made the profile of the wheel not flat, but rather with a taper. This meant that the train shifting to the side would account for the difference in radius. This also had the added benefit of stabilising the train since the flanges help keep it centred. However, it seems like the brake drums don't have tapers, so the self-correcting effect is not present. The rails could also be slightly wobbly, and in the video they are quite wobbly. Also the minecart doesn't have suspension which means all the bumps are transmitted into the box... From my observations, it also seems like the flanges on the brake drums are tiny, which likely makes it easier for the train to derail. Therefore welding a ring onto the drum to increase the flange would help reduce the number of derailments. The minecart only has 2 axles, so it is functionally similar to a singular bogie. Normal trains tend to have two bogies supporting a long carriage. However, it is quite rare to have steerable bogies- vast majority of trains have the axles fixed to the bogie (albeit with some suspension)

This is actually a pretty simple project. It's mostly structural stuff, the mechanics are as simple as a scooter motor and chain drive to one of the axles, and then a tilt hinge for the non-powered axle so that it won't derail if the track twists. As for wiring, it's just a battery, a motor, an off-the-shelf motor controller and an off-the-shelf servo-tester.

additional thought, you could make a furnace cart which hides a large/more powerful electric motor/batteries and have it push or pull a train of minecarts

If he could do this, maybe get Mojang involved, and see about having a post-pandemic event at the park that's based on Minecraft, it'd be really cool. It would definitely drum up park attendance.
