I've sold many of my Leica lenses, including the 35/2.0 Bokeh king, the 50/1.0 Noctilux and a lovely silver body 1962 Era 50/1.4. But I still own my 75/1.4 Mandler designed lens. Love it, don't have a Leica body for it at present (I shoot a Leica Q2 and a Ricoh GRiiiX mostly now), but I love the portrait photos the 75 lux creates. Gorgeous

I have a Leica APO-Telyt-R 180mm f/3.4, this is my favorite telephoto lens, the most amazing part besides the image quality is that it does not appear purple fringing on digital cameras at all, even with such an old The design is completely worthy of the APO title. In addition, it can be perfectly used on the Fuji GFX system.

I have a Minolta 200 f/3.5 that cost me a whole 20 bucks. Sharp for its day, light, portable. I know my Sony 100-400 blows it away, but it’s got a niche for things like moon shots where autofocus is actually a hindrance in many conditions.

I picked up one of these earlier this year to go with my M10-R and it's a fantastic lens! Great review.

Good Morning Hugh! I hope you and your beloved ones are well and dont suffer from the terrible winter storm, which is hitting the US. If i remember well, Leica made six different 180mm Lenses for the R-Mount: two old Elmarit-Lenses (f 2.8), the small Elmar (f 4.0), a modern APO-Elmarit (f 2.8), a modern APO-Summicron (f 2.0) and of course the Mandler APO-Telyt (f 3.4). The Mandler-Lens ist perhaps the most famous of these and known to be extremely sharp - in his days. I have the old Elmarit-R 2.8/180mm, the heavy version, which is nice and not so sharp if stopped down (it did cost me 250€), i also have a Mandler-Lens, the old Elmarit-R 2.8/135 (i paid 300€) - the one with the cemented Front-Elements, which tend to separate. So you can buy some of theses lenses for not so much money. The modern ones are extremely expensive: the APO-Elmarit 2.8 will sell for more than 3000$ and you cannot buy the APO-Summicron-R 2.0/180mm, because nobody who owns it, will give it away. All these lenses require the use of a solid tripod for best results. Without IS and AF you will notice any blur at 180mm, especially with modern high resolution sensors. I love my Leica-Gear, but honestly i do not longer use it so much. So, if it is about flexibility, sharpness and mid-range Tele-Primes, I would rather consider the 1.8/135mm G-Master from Sony and the new stabilized 1.8/135mm Canon-RF Prime. They are expensive and heavy, but when it is about resolution, they are the ones to rule them all. :-) Stay safe and warm and have a good start in the new year! Greetings from Gemany - Andreas

While not at all a lightweight lens, I recently picked up a like new Sigma 180mm f2.8 macro EF mount that I have adapted to my Nikon Z7ll. It is an amazing optic, not only for macro, and as a general mid telephoto. Great for tripod work, but a beast to carry around. I always appreciate your work here. Thank you

Ngl I'm extremely tempted to adapt EF glass to my Z6 both for some of the unique lenses available, and the thrill of slapping an L lens on a Nikon body 😗

I have the Leica R 180mm 2.8, it’s great because it gives images this almost painterly like look, definitely not sharp enough to use for professional work but it’s great for personal work.

I have one since 40 years (also R Summicron 50mm 2.0) from my Leica R4-time and later R6.2 which I still own today. Now i use the R-lenses on Sony alpha 6400 a7RV and on Panasonic mft. Nice...

For MFT the Olympus 75mm 1.8 is the equvalent lens to the Apo-Telyt 180 3.4. It is extraordinaryly sharp, compact and mid-priced. This Olympus is the Real successor for my loved Apo-Telyt.

Thanks as always, Hugh..Happy New Year to you and yours.....when I was listening to you I couldn't help but ask why you didn't mention the Leica 90-280 SL? It fits all of your parameters regarding insane IQ and focal length range....I have had one for three years now as part of my L system and have never had a zoom tele that performs like it. It is long, though for 280mm not so much....not something you will carry all day with many others lenses; however, it delivers..

I know the point of this channel is NOT retro, but to his point, I will always have a place in my lens lineup for my Nikon 180mm f2.8 F-mount lenses. Both the MF and the AF versions are dream machines.

Bravo! I'd love to have a Nikkor 180mm f/2.8S lens to replace, or maybe coexist along side of, the Nikkor 180mm f/2.8D lens that I'm currently using and enjoying even with manual focus on the FTZ adapter.

My money’s on Sigma making one of these in a similar styling to the “i” series. It is a pretty niche lens but if they keep building out the lineup then I’d like to hope that it eventually makes it this far

there's a lot more to a lens than resolving detail. but to each his own, some do it for the art, some for the mtf charts.

Owned one of these in the mid 70's and it was a great handy lens. At its best at infinity (for which it had been designed) and at full aperture. Heavy but very compact and limited in close focus capability which Leitz had compromised for the infinity performance. Incidentally I bought mine in the UK having tried one at the Leitz HQ in Luton. At that time Leitz UK had in stock one demonstrator which I used, one sold to Brian Bower the Leica author who loved it and one as yet unsold which I immediately ordered through them to my dealer. I believe these were the only three copies of the lens in the UK for the next several years due to import restrictions.

The Olympus 180 2.8 was awesome, as was the Nikon 180 2.8. Something about that FL that the designers liked.

Great review. I realize that you are mostly into full frame these days, but have you tried the Panasonic/Leica MFT 200mm f2.8 prime? But of course, if you like to print very large, MFT wont work well for you.

A friend tell me, the owners of Zeiss Otus told me that the peculiarity of Leica lenses is their compactness with excellent optical characteristics. BUT Zeiss, they are larger in size and give excellent micro-contrast, and, as it were, a 3D bokeh effect. But what is the peculiarity of Leica lenses, what do you think?

I'm deciding between the apo-telyt 180 vs the lumix 20-200 f4 - for very similar prices after shipping + pricing of adapters for the apo-telyt! This video is intriguing and I am also thinking about the auto-focus and the OIS. With OIS the lumix makes a really convincing product for the longer focal length.
@3BMEP

Hi Hugh. Regarding The Sony FE 70-200 f4. It is a bit of a sleeper. I was walking in the Lake District (UK) in September when some military aircraft came past me unexpectedly in the valley below., some way off. A7R IV and the 70-200 and for once I had the settings more or less right. The aircraft in the original took up maybe 1/20th of the frame. With a bit of work and cropping the final image had the plane occupying 1/8th of the frame with lettering and crew all sharp. I claim no great skill for this. I was lucky in several ways and the kit (it does matter at times) delivered the goods.

Hi Hugh, have you solved your "200mm" prime (or alternative) need for your use case, since making this video? Thanks.

Nope. Sigh. Current solution: 70-200/2.8 GM II w/ a7R V.

Though manual focus legacy glass, like the one you featured, lack AF, lack in-lens stabilisation, require adaptors, and offer no exif data, etc, etc -- all futzes, and we know you hate futzes... if you come across the Cosina Voigtlander 180mm f/4 APO-Lanthar-SL, I like that one best in this use-case: 485g/17oz, sharp and very well color-corrected. Unfortunately the used price reflects this, but for me until there is a slow aperture compact AF lens out there in this focal length, it's the best thing I've come across.@@3BMEP

It’s a shame that the small teles of the past are mostly gone. The 135/3.5s and 200/4s that were surprisingly small. My Pentax M 200 is a gorgeous little lens, surprisingly small, built-in hood, handles wonderfully. Modern lenses along these lines could be a treat.
