Other well regarded lenses to take a look at are the: Zeiss 85mm f/4 (sharper, albeit slower, than the Voigtlander 90mm f/2.8 APO mentioned in this video) Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 Distagon (if you can stomach the size/weight) Voigtlander 75mm f/1.5 Voigtlander 21mm f/1.4 (another big lens, but not unexpected for the design parameters) Voigtlander 28mm f/2 II (specifically the new version II as it is much improved over the version I mentioned in this video as being a dud) Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 Nokton II (again, specifically the new version II) Voigtlander 50mm f/3.5 (if the odd design does not throw you off) All of these lenses are modern, sharp, contrasty, and reasonably well corrected; as good as any current Leica equivalent.

I’ve had my Zeiss ZM for a few years now and love it! I did have an M3 and it was a thing of beauty but I eventually settled on the ZM and sold the M3. It Iives alongside my M246 and SL. Most of my M mount lenses are Voigtlander but also have and love a Summicron-M 50/2 v5 and Super-Elmer 21/3.4.

While not a rangefinder the Ricoh GXR is a unique M-Mount camera. It has an optional EV-F that works great for something that was released in 2009. I picked up the GXR body for about $120 and the M-Mount module for $250 might be the cheapest M-mount camera you can get.

I purchased an Epson R-D1 last year and it changed my life. I agree, no one should seriously consider purchasing one. But owning one for myself has completely changed my outlook on camera specs. 6mp is enough for me. The colors are fantastic. And I found that I actually LOVE cocking the shutter with the lever... It's a camera that makes you work for an image but man oh man it is it enjoyable... For me. I have a weekly battle with myself trying to convince myself that I can't afford to purchase a second one. I may loose that battle one day.

What a great series, I watch the episodes with a focus peaking interest. Although new to Leica, currently with the M10-R, I am a long time pro, but now retired from the daily shooting of the commercial demands, I simply shoot what I want. I’m currently using the Voigtlander 50mm f2 APO-Lanthar (a great lens) and the Voigtlander 35mm f2 Ultron II, another great lens and so compact. I may add the Voigtlander 90mm f2.8 APO-Skopar you and others have recently tested and recommended.

Interesting talk. Thanks. I have a 75 Helier and it is a beautiful lens in all respects. So now I can go out shooting with the Voigtlander 35 APO and the 75 or the 28 Ultron and the 50 Lux. I really like the Ultron, but my real favourite is the Summilux. I’m sure I will end up getting the 35 as well.

Do not forget to try some R lenses on your M. On the heavy side but some are very cheap, easy to find and you can use them on your SL2 also.

Thanks for an interesting discussion on M glass. I have an M (i.e., a typ 240) and a SL2s and a quite a few M and some L lenses. The latter are zooms from Panasonic and Sigma. The M ones are by Leica, Zeiss, Voigtlander and Minolta. I'd say that 90-95 % of my exposures are made with my APO-Summicron 50mm Asph. This is an outstanding lens. I bought it new a few years ago. It is true that it is fine wide open and you don't need to stop down unless your subject requires some extra depth of field. The Panasonic 24-70mm f=2.8 weighs 2-3 times more, but is very good. I love every aspect of it except its weight. I list some other lenses below, in the order of frequency of use: My 35mm Biogon ZM is in my bag always. A very, very good lens (but usually it is a 50mm which is mounted. It is the right focal length for me). The 25mm Biogon f=2.8 ZM is absolutely outstanding. It often get a place in my bag for landscapes. It is sharp as a razor blade and has a lovely build (as all ZM). I love using it with an 20mm extension tube for wide angle macro. The result is awesome (www.dropbox.com/s/fpq3ygki6d7o6bc/l1000042-01.jpeg?dl=0). Otherwise 25mm is a bit too wide for me in ordinary situations. Still it is a must have lens for me. Adding macro and landscape, I might use it more than the 35mm Biogon (even if I don't carry it with me). I own the Sonnar 50mm f=1.5. It is a fine piece of glass. Strong temperament. Like a Summilux that will bite you if you're not careful with its powerful bokeh. I never carry two 50mm lenses, so unless I want that bokeh, Sonnar has to stay at home. I might use Sonnar, enjoying its temperament for a few weeks until I come to a situation when the chromatic abberation is unbearable. Then Sonnar goes back to the cupboard and Summicron returns to the camera and stays there for a few months or so. Sonnar then has to stay on the same shelf as my Voigtlander Heliar 15mm f=4.5 and Heliar 75mm f=1.8. I use use the 75mm more often than the 15mm. I like my 135mm Elmar f=4. It is early 1960ies, so it is just a few years younger than me. And as grumpy as me. I use my 400mm Telyt R with M adapter. It is far too grumpy, worse than me. The Sigma Zoom is easier with SL2s. The M's live view and focus peaking wasn't good enough for the Telyt. I only have one Minolta lens, a Rokkor 40mm f=2.0. It is a nice Summicron cousin. I hardly ever use it. It does the same job as real summicron, but it is not as good and it is a bit too wide. That is about it. I could talk a bit about using historical Nikon F glass, but I feel that might be too esoteric? And microscope lenses/adapters on M and L bodies. That is another tl:dr.

I'm glad you mentioned the Voigtlander Bessa M mount rangefinders. I have the RM2 and it's amazing. It's a perfect introduction to the M Mount world. Cheaper, lighter, and less well made than the Leica Ms, but very enjoyable to use.

I started the M path (already having an SL2) with a Bessa, and one of my lenses was the Voigtländer Heliar Classic 75mm f/1.8. The Bessa was okay, but it involved way more futzing than I wanted. (Oh, you forgot to switch the framelines when switching lenses? You want to use a lense with goggles? You want easier film loading?) I eventually upgraded to an M7, which felt like a major improvement. The 75mm Heliar definitely felt... classic, by which I mean lots of aberration and soft. The 75mm Summilux is much sharper with less aberration wide open. The 35mm Ultron, though... Wow, even on the SL2.

Fuji x100 series is rangefinder and m mount also has a few more rangefinder options. Epson rd1 for digital and Minolta cle for film

In this episode you just nailed it Hugh!! I must admit that using a Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 ZE on my Canon is my “budget” way of having a Leica experience… on one hand we have the price to get one Leica body and on the other, the price to buy a lens. As a hobbyist I can’t justify (neither of) them! I am always keeping an eye for the opportunity to buy an M10-D (that’s the only Leica I really like) even used but in the back of my head I have the fact that it’s too much money for a camera that won’t makes me money. That dilemma is really tough…

I shoot a Ricoh GXR with the Leica M module and I shot all my favorite vintage lenses including a Leica 35mm f3.5 Summaron and a 90mm f4 Elmar adapted. Also many adapted Zeiss, Takumar, Konica, TOMIOCA, Yashica, Nikon and Meyer Optical Gorlitz. I love all my old lenses and personally I've never found a really good Leica lens that I could afford and all the used ones I bought despite Ebay claims, were basically crap ! So I'm very wary of Leica lenses. Voigtlander is where I plan to go and I absolutely love my 2 GXR's and I plan to get another Leica module as well. What I really wish for is a Fuji X lens to Leica M adapter, that would be awesome to my way of thinking ! Why isn't anybody making them ? Also Ricoh to Leica M. Thanks, Larry McCormick

On the 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 - I ordered one shortly after picking up my M4, and it arrived with most of the aperture blades visibly out of place in an oval shape. I returned it and got a refund, I wasn't tempted to try another copy. At the time I was using the original super-low-budget option the Jupiter 8 as my 50mm lens. I still have this lens and love seeing 'Made in USSR' on the front. It performs decently stopped down but is at f/2 - still, in low light I prefer a soft image to no image at all. I do, however, now own the Zeiss Planar 50/2 you mention in the video and would gladly recommend it. For 35mm I went with the Voigtländer Nokton which is more of a character lens than the Zeiss but I'm perfectly happy with it for film photography. I'd probably be less satisfied if using it on an M10, M10-R or M11. Thanks Hugh for your time and effort in bringing us your thoughts, considerations and recommendations. My own reasons for picking up the M4 were similar to many of your personal reasons for choosing Leica, and I'm delighted to own and use a piece of history.

I highly recommend the Carl Zeiss 2.0/35mm Biogon. Excellent optical quality, T* coating which means no flare whatsoever and better bokeh and image quality (for me) then my 35 Summicron type IV (not Leica nomenclature). Build quality and size go to the Summicron though.

If you considered Q2/Q2 monochrome to be a cheaper version of M mount cameras, that is to say if you love 28mm and willing to use it all the time, then the Q series could be the option to the “cheap” route entry to the Leica ecosystem. I am in consideration of going that route as a landscape photographer. Thanks

Owning no Leica glass currently, I can add one other data point for Voigtlander, Zeiss, and Minolta lenses. I have a rather weathered Zeiss Planar 50mm f2 and have found it to be very sharp and the maximum aperture sufficiently wide enough given the challenges you mentioned of finding critical focus via rangefinder when the focus zone is mere centimeters. I recently got the Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 Color Skopar, which has surprised me. It barely feels like anything on the body but is razor sharp even wide open and trivial to carry around. The biggest lens I have for M mount is Voigtlander's 75mm 1.5 Nokton. I was intrigued after Steve Huff's review of it and managed to get a used copy. While difficult to achieve critical focus at 1.5, it has a dreamy portraiture rendering I really love for that focal length; YMMV. Finally, I came across a Craigslist posting last year of someone near me selling a Rokkor 90mm f4 for next to nothing. I decided to pick it up on a lark and love it. It is beautifully sharp, edge-to-edge, has beautiful color and dreamy bokeh. Honestly, the only thing I dislike about it is that it's 90mm, and the focus patch in the rangefinder is absurdly small to try to lock in. On my M-E/M9, all of these lenses perform up to my expectations, though I'd really love Live View, especially for the 90. At the point at which I finally make a jump to something like an M-10R, I might find them lacking, but maybe not. The type of shooting I do with them doesn't require clinical-level sharpness and the "character" they each bring just endears them to me. My M is what I shoot for fun, when I want that filmic experience without the hassles of film. To get "work" done, I've got Fujis. :)

Konica Hexar RF can be had for US$1000. I was lucky I was able to buy it 6 years back for US$600. Yes it is battery operated, louder than an M and not a Leica. But it still is a very good film M alternative. I also like it for shooting with 28mm due to its 0.6 magnification.

As far as I can ascertain, Voigtländer are owned by Cosina, who also makes many of the Zeiss lenses. Cosina is also one of the major suppliers of optical glass to many camera and lens makers. Thanks, Hugh, your video has come at an opportune time for me. Recently, I am tempted to try a cheap 35 mm m-mount lens, probably the f2 from 7 Artisans. My biggest gripe about my M10-P is that, being a spectacle wearer, I cannot see the whole field of view of my favoured 28 mm lens through the viewfinder, and it is a faff to check composition on the rear LCD screen after focussing using the rangefinder. Using the EVF rather negates the rangefinder experience, so I hit on the idea of buying a cheap 35 mm lens (which frame lines I can just about see in the viewfinder) to explore how I get on with this focal length. If I like it, I will think about buying a Summicron, though the Zeiss and Voigtländer offerings seem very good (I have the Zeiss 50 mm f2 Planar and it is an excellent lens).

Having now watched Part 3, for which, I thank you, I can safely say that I am a recent addition to Part 2 having been previously existed in what would be Part 0 and Part 1. The recent acquisitions of both APO Lanthar 35 and 50 and the Zeiss Planar 50 have to some extent opened my eyes. I have confirmed, if that had been necessary, that I am a 50mm shooter, and the APO Lanthar 50 is currently my go to lens on my M bodies. Displacing my Summilux, Summicron and Summarit’s. As an only occasional M shooter, the Leica APO 50 is something that I could never justify and the Voigtlander was definitely worth the punt. It my be larger, but as I also use it on my SL2, it looks less comical and has better ergonomics, for me. Though I have to say that I am firmly in Part 3 but not for M equivalent reasons, owning many of the cameras mentioned in Part 3 for the sake of interest and fulfilling suppressed GAS from a younger age. In particular, the dials on the Nikon 35Ti have got me started on looking at Seiko and their watches (sigh), another childhood memory. Keep up the good work.

Good presentation, sir! I favor remaining faithful to Leica, for 50mm lenses, but, having had prior experience with Zeiss and Voigtlander lenses on DSLRs, I have not hesitated to opt for ZM and CV lenses, on my M10 and Type 246 Monochrom cameras. I especially favor the Distagon 1,4/35mm ZM, and the C Biogon 4,5/21mm ZM, the former on the M10 and 246, and the latter on the 246, as the nicely compact 21mm ZM shows color shift inimages shot on digital Leicas. Notably, the C Biogon 4,5/21mm ZM has very, very low distortion, making it quite wonderful for shots with trees, poles, fences, buildings, and such.

Some ttartisan lens are just great, similar results and experience with 1/15 the cost. I ll take that all day. The worst thing that can happen is to buy a 10-15k noctilux and find out a year later that it's mostly collecting dust on the shelf. Getting it for 800 makes me feel much less guilty of only occasionally use it for happy occasions :)

Also for m11, it's great and all, but looking at my x100f and Minolta cle which is mostly collecting dust comparing to my go to sl2-s, I would say if I do purchase one, it will likely sit on the shelf after half a year or so. A used m10 or m240 will be just find for the Leica m experience for me

PIXII v2 is the Leica M8 alternative. Biggest downside is the RF patch obstruction on bigger glass.

A question, rather than a comment: Are you able to shed any light on the problem of color aberration when using a Voigtlander 21mm/f4 on Leica digital M9 or M10 bodies? Ken Rockwell (as well as a couple of other reviewers) wrote that the lens should not be used on the M9 as the rear element was too close to the sensor. I use an M10-R and am wondering if his information pertains to it, as well. Thank you for providing information for those of us less well-heeled than Leica-only aficionados.

I forgot to ask. You mentioned TTArtisan's 28mm f/5.6. I'd love to hear more. I have the 28mm Summaron-M and love how it renders. TTArtisan's looks like a copy, except the photos I've seen taken with it ... look like cell phone snaps.

They are completely different optical designs and thought the same of the TTA images. Hard pass here whilst the 5.6/28 Summaron is a grail lens for me.

Great video !!! I have the ZM 21/2.8, 35/1.4, 50/1.5 and 85/4. The 21 is as good as the Leica 21 Super Elmar, the 35 is optically better than the Leica 35 Lux (albeit much bigger), the 85 is a great landscape tele but no portrait lens. The Sonnar 50 is an oddball, dreamy and glowy, never sharp, certainly not your first and only 50, but a special occasion lens. The Leica 50 lux is much better, but at 4x the price. All have great build and haptics, 100 USD+ lenshoods sold seperately, but much cheaper than Leica. Recommended !

The one camera I really want does not exist. I would like to have a rangefinder style camera with high resolution, autofocus and interchangeable lenses. (A monochrome version would be nice, too.) Manual focus should be an option, not the only option. The M10 Monochrom is on my wish list, but the price is prohibitive and even then I’m not sure if I could ever master manual focus. I hope I’m wrong about that. Renting one occasionally is my best option until some camera company makes my dream camera.

If you like film, have a look at a used Contax G2: that comes pretty close to what you want, but it's obviously not digital. Renting an M for a day might just be disappointing because you have to give yourself a little time to get used to the different rangefinder shooting style. It does take a bit of training (but it's worth it!). Have fun, that's the main thing 🙂

I think this is "The Way", I also *think* I know where you are going with this and hell... SOMEONE has to say it out loud for the masses. Whenever ANYONE tells me, "Leica is for dentists" and yeah okay, sometimes yeah okay. But as a TOOL, there are MANY ways to get down in it. My answer to the budget gourmet is Ricoh GXR with the Leica camera module and all your favorite vintage lenses with the right adapters or just straight on with Leica M mount lenses of which there are many. My favorite lens of all times is my Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm F1.8 Pancolar. As far as I'm concerned, it can't be beat by anybody ! LarryMac

18:50 Don’t forget the Konica Hexar RF. Also, the Hexar AF with the 35mm fixed lens. Two other great Leica M alternatives for film.

@@BilBrown Yes, there’s also the Nikon S and SP for film rangefinders. But the ones with Leica M mounts are I think limited to the Bessa’s, the Zeiss Ikon, and the Hexar RF. I used to own the Hexar RF (with the M Hexanon 50 mm f/2), the Hexar AF, and the Mamiya 7 II (with the 80mm) Great cameras all three but I eventually sold them for a Leica MP. Eventually also sold the MP because I needed the cash. Held on to the 50 mm Hexanon for a while but then also sold that. Should have kept it because I’m now wanting to get the Leica M-A, back to the basics.

As I said in my video. Voigtlander 28f2 Ultron II. It is basically as good as the 28 Summicron. It is brass. It is smooth like silk, tiny, and the IQ is Leica good. IMO, this is the king of the 28mm currently. It is one of those lenses you never sell. Hugh, if you can get a hold of one, I guarantee you will love it and it won’t leave your camera bag. I also have the Zeiss 50f2 Planar. It is the same symmetrical 6 elements in 4 groups like the Summicron, and it has so much resolution I wouldn’t be surprised if it wouldn’t resolve a medium format sensor. It handles the 40MP M10R sensor like it’s not even there. It’s a crime that there aren’t any real reviews of this planar. It has been around a long time and it deserves more mentions, and it is why I made the video. The Planar and especially the 28f2 Ultron II leave you wanting nothing. At that point it is only you and your skills that will make your pictures better. If you find my video about these 2 lenses… leave a like! 😃 Be my 76th subscriber Hugh! 😊👌 PS: I so agree with you about the M. I bought the 10R as my forever Leica. It’s weird people look at them as investments. You grow so attached to them that I couldn’t imagine parting with it. Because of the manual mechanical nature of it, the constant handling of it really creates a bond with you and the camera, the same way winding a mechanical manual wind watch every morning bonds you with a watch.

As far as I know the only lenses Zeiss make themselves are the Otis, Milvus, and (now discontinued) classic lines, in addition to their cinema glass. The Loxia and ZM lenses are made by Cosina, while the Batis and Touit lenses are made by Tamron. My impression of Zeiss is that they are phasing out their photographic business, so expect a lot more discontinuations in the future as stock dries up.

If I am not mistaken, even the classic M line was coming from Cosina. Only the UW lenses 15mm/21mm were made bei Zeiss.

Another lovely verbal wander through the variety of camera gear choices we have these days. I recently decided that if I were, in fact, to settle on buying an M8 - still the closest way to a "cheap" entry into digital M, though not without inherent risk - then I'd most likely buy the new Voigt 28mm /f2 Ultron II Vintage. All online info suggests much improved performance over the series 1 Ultron, with many suggesting it is superior to Leica's 28mm options. In Australia, this combo would equate to a little over AU$3200 depending on the M8 condition. A not insignificant sum. So, as always, "cheap" is an entirely relative ratio in Leica terms.

I tried the Voigtlander 35 1.2 version 2 lens on an M9 and M240. Very disappointing. The colors and contrast were very flat and uninspiring. I used the Zeiss 35 f2 on an M10 for several years. That lens was just about perfect on the M10. Sharp, crisp, terrific images. Worked excellently on a 24MP body. I have not tried that lens on my current M10R. My all-time favorite is the Zeiss 35 f1.4. This lens is my go-to on my M10R. Sharp, crisp excellent color and contrast. Very nice and smooth sharpness fall-off. I also tried the 35 Summilux before I settled on the Zeiss. For purity I also have the 50 Summicron (current version). Another excellent lens. Highly recommended. Finally I have the new Noct 1.2. A terrible lens. JUNK. I have nothing good to say about this lens. Shockingly it works best not on an M10R or SL2 but on my lowly Nikon Z5 with the Novoflex adapter. Who knew.

Leica M's used to shine in the 3 foot to 20 foot f/2 to f/4 range with slower ISOs like 25 to 100.... As we progress into the modern era of 10,000 ISO and 1/16000 electronic shutters; new vistas unfold for us as photographers, we need to embrace change and I am seeing marvelous ways of adapting to current photography. The one constant is Leica is still the rock-solid tool in the fray.

I believe that the only reason I would by a Leica body is to use Leica glass , If I don't have money to buy Leica Glass then I would buy any other camera brand and use the TT Glass on

TTartisans is garbage. If you’re a reviewer or an influencer, sure, you’ll get more than your money’s worth. If you’re not, good luck - a percentage of us will get malassembled, off-center crap that pays for your perfect lenses.

I'm not a reviewer and certainly not an influencer, but I tried a few of the TTartisans lenses and found them very good. Currently shooting the 17mm f1.4. If I didn't prefer the AF on the Sigma 30/1.4, I'd be using the TTartisan 35/1.4 too. Get one with a good return policy so you can check the centering...
