Here's a review of the Leica MP. I've had mine for about 3 years and adore it. However, I don't think it should be your first Leica, and I don't think a Leica should be your first 35mm camera. I discuss pros and cons, make a bunch of comparisons, shoot the camera, yada yada.
chapters:
0:00 intro and some pics
1:33 in the field w/ p160
2:48 pros + facts
4:23 in the field w/ fp4, t-max 100
5:24 cons
6:37 in the field w/ t-max 100, p160, fp4
7:31 sharpness demos at 60ish MP
8:06 comparison w/ leicas
10:59 comparison w/ point and shoots
12:38 lens options
13:14 conclusion and final thoughts
13:36 thanks for watching :)
---
quick tech specs for nerds:
leica mp + leica 50/2 apo cron
mostly at f/4-f/8
sharpness examples at 1/250s or faster
(no tripod because the ghost of
henri cartier brsesson would murder me. sue me.)
b&w developed in xtol by photolab in berkeley, ca
scanned w/ fuji gfx 100 + 120/4 GF + extension tube
(film mounted in negative.supply setup)
at f/11 (film flatness is hard!)
(single image, not stitched,
effective resolution ~60 MP,
effective DPI ~3400)
(a.k.a. WAY overkill)
color inverted in NLP + LR to taste
B&W inverted by hand + LR to taste
there's no such thing as a neutral scan,
and this isn't a scientific review.

Love my MP. I shoot 99% with a 50 lux and recently added a 1.25x magnifier and it's just a dream to shoot. I did remove the original leatherette and replaced with the type 4008 found on earlier M cameras and that too has improved the handling. Great to have stumbled on your channel, perhaps we'll run into each other as I'm in the east bay too. cheers

you won't regret it. literally a camera you'll shoot for the rest of your life, good to treat yourself as long as you know you like shooting 35mm film on a rangefinder. i like black because (1) beautiful black-to-chrome patina and (2) just more modern and harder to find in vintage leicas - but of course both choices are beautiful.

The early M4-P cameras, with the recessed windows are brass top plate models. They went to a flat M6 type window and the zinc top plate part way through the model run. The M4-2 and M4-P were almost all made in black, it is the chrome ones here that are really hard to find and quite collectable.

With this camera, no real issues, at least with a 35mm or longer lens. with a 28, it's a challenge (have done it), and people would tell you to buy a wider viewfinder for 28mm. MP (and really all leicas) have glorious rangefinder patches that put pretty much all other rangefinder patches to shame. (The MP is also really flare resistant so the RF patch is visible even with aggressive light coming at you.)

Thank you for the video, really enjoyed it. Question: What's your opinion on the M3 vs the MP for a person who mainly shoots 50mm? I understand the m3 viewfinder is higher magnification and has a larger 50mm frameline. I'm wondering if you found the difference to be meaningful or slight?
@atomikpi
@atomikpi Год назад
Personally, as someone who loves 50mm (second to 35mm), I don't mind the extra context / almost like it? It's a personal decision, and some people would rather see objects in the frame better. Both will feel lovely, be super reliable (after a CLA for the M3), MP will have a marginally better/higher-contrast finder, and MP will cost quite a bit more. Hope that helps.

Just recently started shooting with an M6. I tried out the Minolta CLE for a bit but preferred the metering on the M6. Your comments on comparisons with M-P were brief. Given that the M6 does have so much hype, I’d be interested in comparisons to the M-P. Also, why did you keep the M6 for a short while? Thanks for the video. I appreciate sharing the film specs for your shots. And the music was a good and proper flex.
@atomikpi
@atomikpi 2 года назад
To give a bit more detail, it's mostly that I prefer the feel of the MP - film advance, weight and heft. I actually didn't own both at the same time - sold the M6 after I bought an M4 (used a hot shoe meter). Honestly, other than the feel, they're not wildly different, and all Leica comparisons are kind of splitting hairs. (They're pretty similar!) But given how expensive m6's have gotten, I'd make the same decision again.
@cggg490
@cggg490 Год назад
@@atomikpi Ended up selling my M6 TTL and got a silver MP (I would have preferred matte black cause not a fan of black paint look but I also prefer having a built in meter). Needless to say I love it. I understand why you favored the feel of the MP. It feels more substantial and materials just feel better than the M6. (wondering about the 2022 M6 but not really). Overall, using the MP is more enjoyable than the M6. I did end up putting an M6 advance lever on the MP since I just prefer how it feels.

Good video been looking at the MA since there is not a light meter. I’ve also been looking at the m5. However with your comment it might make sense to just start with a m5. I didn’t k is the m4-2 was not brass which now makes the m5 more attractive. The m5 sits in around the m4-2 price range
@atomikpi
@atomikpi Год назад
I had an m5 which I loved and regret selling. It's a tiny bit larger and less ergonomic, but it's brass, very solid, and has a better light meter than literally any other leica (shows you how over/underexposed you are). Personally, having a light meter makes shooting more stress free, but again whether you want one or not is subjective. If you find yourself not using the meter, you should be able to sell your m5 for about what you paid and pick up an MP.

On film? Zero difference from f/4, maybe even 2.8. I bought the lens for digital. I had a much cheaper Zeiss 50/2 planar that's also super sharp, contrasty, perfect from f/4 down.
@james-p
@james-p 3 года назад
5:18 +1 on the crows! lol Two major advantages of rangefinders: First, it is actually easier to focus accurately in low light than an SLR. The split image part of the RF can be used way after an SLR microprism/split image kind of "shorts out" when the light's not bright enough. Also, the overall view in a rangefinder is brighter. Second, with B&W film I always use at least a yellow filter (more often, an orange) when shooting outdoors. Yellow just makes everything on B&W film look "right," and orange pumps it up a bit. And then there's red... Anyway, with an SLR, you have to look through the filter. With the rangefinder, you have the same nice clear view while the filter does its job.
@atomikpi
@atomikpi 3 года назад
Cheers! Good points, yes. I should really use yellow/orange filters more.
@j.k5654
@j.k5654 2 года назад
I had the opposite experience about forcing easily in low light with my Leica. I love to look through an slr with a red filter on. It helps with pre- visualization of the scene. One of the main reasons I shoot slr is to look through the filters. And yes, slr are more accurate when shooting wide open as I love to do. These points make my Leica sleep on the shelf lately.

yeah, I do hang some of my work, but typically only once every few years. @atomikpi

different, not better or worse. obviously way more resolution and I do like Leica digital colors, but it's nice with the mp having a more tactile feel, no upgrade-itis, and film looks great though technically not perfect.

@@atomikpi OK I’m new to Leica and shooting with MP and M11 both I purchased this year. I love how they feel and very interesting bodies to work with. Don’t need to put any battery in MP or do software updates and focus on simplicity it really cool.

Wow an actual review where the author mentions the film AND the Lens used. Just joking, the sarcasm/frustration is directed at other "content creators" who wanna review leica bodies but don't mention the lens used to create the images. Ultimately the body is just the film carrier and its the lens which the light goes through to paint the picture. Simple logic that most people who shoot film can't seem to understand. Thanks for actually mentioning it as its the most important part when it comes to film, especially if we're talking leica.. as almost every single version of any focal length have different looks. Like and subscribed just on that. Thanks!

@popcorny11 3 года назад
@@atomikpi apo for film is definitely overkill but.. that was gonna be my next lens on the mp though lol. It was either throwing down for 50apo or reissue 1.2 noct. Both are similar price range but very different purposes.. always wanted an insane 50. In my limited time with it, the 50apo does make a significant difference even on film.. hows your experience on film with it? I would guess it enhances any and every film stock you put through it?
@atomikpi
@atomikpi 3 года назад
@@popcorny11 I bought it when I had a digital leica (m10), and it did great there. subjectively, compared to my old 50 (zeiss 50/2, great lens also), I think it's maybe marginally sharper (definitely at f/2, less so by around f/4) and with better bokeh / more organic look (subjective). Also prettier and better feel in use. if you don't mind a little size/possible viewfinder blockage/worse ergonomics, voigtlander's new 50 APO is supposed to be excellent. I got their 35 APO and think it's great. But no focusing nub is a major downside for me (less fun to focus/slower).
@popcorny11
@popcorny11 3 года назад
@@atomikpi I know what you mean about the smoother and more natural bokeh. Thanks for recommendation I’ll see if I could find a voigt 50apo to test out. However, I do prefer (yes, very subjective) the look of a leica summicron than any other lens though. I even got rid of all my luxes from back then and just lived with a 35cron asph v2. If you still have the lens, you could get one of those stick-on focus tabs though!

Great video! Thank you! I only have two remarks. 1st: Portra is not for street, it's for portrait because of skin tones. So street and landscape become somehow flawless. 2nd: The lens makes the picture, the cam is only for holding the lens. Rangefinders have to be adjusted from time to time. Anyway, thanks for yr video.
@atomikpi
@atomikpi 2 года назад
hi - thanks for your thoughts. yes, rangefinders do drift, luckily have not seen much of it on my Leicas. My Mamiya 7 on the other hand... and yes, the camera is just a light-blocking box etc, but the Leica system gives you access to some great lenses (not just Leica but Zeiss, Voigtlander, vintage Canon, etc.), so I think it's only in competition with some SLR mounts for optics offered. some of us use portra for street and landscape work for a lower contrast look. of course, it's great for portraits too! sometimes I want more contrast and saturation than p160 offers, so p400, or even p800 or ektar give that.
@frankzappa3834
@frankzappa3834 Год назад
I’m an M3 shooter and I will say having the best rangefinder design makes slapping a 50 and gunning a breeze. But it’s not that bad to throw on a shoe mounted VF instead of goggles for wide angle lenses Barnack style. Not having 35mm framelines is not that bad honestly
@atomikpi
@atomikpi Год назад
yeah, I love that bigger viewfinder with a 50mm and don't hate (but don't love) a separate viewfinder. maybe I'm clumsy, but I also worry about losing hotshoe finders, especially since I tend to use Leicas for more casual shooting.

Your opinion, mine! The "mirror slap" of SLR is nonsense. Some SLR had mirror damping. Leicaflex, Pentax Me-Super, Canon A series.. Test for vibration. Check with coin balanced on body, self timer or firm surface and push shutter. Never affected my images on Nikon-F, Pentax etc. The M3 is the nicest of all Leica-M. A photographer should be able to 'judge' the light. It's not Astrophysics. The googles were great 35mm on M3. Loading can be done in the dark, as all Leica's. Viewfinder almost as accurate as SLR. Paint job on MA unacceptable. Oh My M3 from new in box 1967, till now 54 years pro assignments.. Places where history happened. Nice description.
@atomikpi
@atomikpi 3 года назад
thanks for watching! I don't think mirror slap is too big of a deal - notice it more with medium format film SLRs than 35 - but nice to not have it be remotely a concern. Agreed on the 35mm goggle eyes on the M3, I like mine. Also like the collapsible Elmarit that makes it a pocket camera, but the 135 Hektor is at the very end of my ability to see what's in the frame (although it focuses great). hi! polite feedback like yours is definitely appreciated. I think there are a few potential solutions here (0) Just cut the text. But then I wouldn't be able to add thoughts while editing, which is not ideal. (1) Reshoot after editing. This seems like a major pain, I'm not a big channel so not going to do this. (2) Script out the video. I do have bullet points, but I think full scripts would make this stiff and not conversational like I want it to be. (3) I think I'll try to cut back on their length a little bit to make them more readable. they've probably gotten out of hand. thanks for watching!
