Gotta say, as a Fujifilm user, I am not surprised. From my experiences, I have thoroughly enjoyed each Fuji lens and body I have used. I have had zero issues processing the images afterward, etc. I would love a Leica, but for my budget and what I do, the fujifilm is just so hard to beat. I sell photos, have photos in galleries, etc. At the end of the day, the gear really absolutely does not matter - a photograph that stirs the heart and mind, one that captivated the viewer, can be made with anything from film, iPhone, digital. Your conclusion is spot on: stick with what user experience you like most. Whatever aids rather than hinders the creative process is the “correct” camera. I happen to like my Fuji and my Fuji lenses, so it works for me.

100% agree with Samuel. In this day and age, the end products will be difficult to differentiate between the different camera manufacturers if you know what you are doing. It boils down to usability and which camera makes you want to shoot more photos. Those Fujifilm photos look mighty fine to me compared to the Leica Q2 photos.

I owned both of these at the same time and was just blown away by the Fuji 18 f/1.4. It's such a good lens, and I noticed the same similarities as you. Ultimately I stayed with the Q2, because I find the combination of features on that camera ideal for me-both the handling and the crop modes in the viewfinder combined with the 47MP sensor. But the 18 f/1.4 is *awesome.*

Yes very good points and I can and do appreciate so much about the Q2 user experience but just from a results-perspective, the Fujinon gets its done at a lower price. But results are not everything of course and the higher resoltion and cropping features on the Q2 are definitely very useful! It will be interesting to see how the higher resolution fujifilm cameras that are probably coming out next year will peform with these new lenses.

I’m so glad that I got this lens for my xpro3. Pure joy and excitement every time I bring it out to the streets (over 23mm). I remember in one of Samuel’s videos he said having a slightly wider focal length allows you to include more than just the subject in focus. And I feel this lens does that in a very pleasing way:)

I agree with you that they are hard to tell apart, so shoot with the one that gives you the most joy. Joy can be defined by feel, ergonomics, or budget. If you get more joy in shooting with a Fuji because it's more affordable, go for it. If you get more joy in shooting with the Leica because you can afford it, go for it. At the end, enjoy the journey.

I document the activities of our art organisation using cameras ranging from FF to smartphones. Photos are then given to our marketing team to use in our website, social media and printed publications. I also take photos at art exhibitions and events to accompany reviews I write for art magazines. I've done this for 25 years and I can assure you that even professional graphic designers DON'T CARE about which photographic gear was used, they just pick the most effective images even if they were taken with smartphones

I own the Q2 and also a Fuji x100v. I think that is a fair comparison. If you mounted the 28mm equivalent adapter you almost have the same camera. F2 vs F1.7 is different obviously but close. If you shoot jpgs the Fuji is the better choice. One could debate full frame vs other sensors but for me Fuji is great. I also like the Fuji controls better than the Q2 but in my opinion the Q2 menus are superior. I have owned Leica cameras for many years there is no doubt they make the best lenses but these days the difference in lenses is marginal. In the end what makes you happy and gets you out of the house to shoot is what really matters.

I had the exact same realization when I picked up the old 18 f2 lens for the fuji system. People say it's a bad lens but honestly it has lovely character for street and documentary work. The compact size + a XE4 could definitely rival a Q2 in image quality (just being half a stop slower) That being said you're bang on for the Leica. You honestly don't buy it for the performance, it's just in the user experience and the "brand"

I own the majority of Fuji APS-C lenses including the 18 f2 and f1.4. I love the f2 because of its size and character, but its terrible for sharpness (which you don't often need for street). I will never buy a Leica, but I would never think that the 18 f2 is Leica-like or remotely comparable to the 18 f1.4. Different use, different price bracket.
@StuartWeir
@StuartWeir 2 года назад
I agree but also, I don’t. In terms of sharpness, the Q2 will beat the 18 f2 by a mile, but I gotta say… I have had a ton of Fuji lenses, all much better than the 18 f2, but I _always_ come back to it and now it’s my only lens on my only digital camera, the X-E4. The character and rendition (especially portraits) are weirdly flattering with the lens, and it’s equally great for street. Is it the best landscape lens? No, but I don’t often shoot landscapes.

I’m no longer a gear head so I rarely watch review videos (but yours are good to watch - no brick walls!) I used to have the 18mm f2 on my old Fuji X-Pro 1 (7 or so years ago) and I loved it. I’ve since moved through Nikon, Canon and eventually to Sony for work and my A7Riii does everything I could ask for. But…. I recently got a GRiii to carry around and WHAT A CAMERA! But you know that right?! It has also made me fall back in love with the 28mm FOV. I’d looked at the Q (Q2 is way out of my price range) but this new Fuji 18mm, on a weatherproof body, could be everything I’ve been looking for. Thank you Samuel!

Great comparison video. The picture quality is very similar. When I decided to get a higher end camera (as opposed my phone or my Canon Powershot) in January, I researched the hell out of it. I was unaware of the Leica cult at that time. I just wanted to learn how to take great pictures shooting manually. What attracted me to the SL 601 with 50 mm Summarit lens was the simplicity. No endless menus, no AF. I bought the body and lens used so I didn't have to mortgage my house. I still love it and am trying to live up to its quality.

I have gone through a very similar journey as Samuel and one of the things I have learned is that while gear doesn't really matter in optimal conditions, it does matter in extreme conditions and that's what we should base our decisions on. For example, if I often shoot at night, low-light performance does vary from camera to camera. In general, cameras are getting closer and closer to each other in the final results, which is an interesting situation because we get to focus more on the experience and extra features.

I've had both, my second hand Leica Q, which died after a couple of months believe it or not, and Fujis X-Pro1, 2 and 3!!! The experience of using the Q with that silky focus tab, being able to zone focus for street and seeing your range by just looking down at the lens really was part of the experience for me. I enjoyed nailing the focus manually and got a lot of satisfaction from it. And I miss it. Maybe because I first started shooting on manual film cameras back as a kid? I thought the Leica DNG files were easier edit and the amount of detail you could get back from the shadows was amazing I felt. I love my Fuji, but it's just doesn't feel as satisfying for me. I wish it did as it would save me a lot of money, but I'm missing the Leica Q dam it!

Longtime lurker, first time commenter. I’ve really enjoyed all of your vids, particularly in the COVID-era, because they show your process of working through everything from being happy with images you produce to acquiring gear that you hope will help you produce more of those kind of images. The conclusion of this video feels like you’ve reached a peace of mind about gear vs ouput. I’ve also bought a crapton of cameras over the last two years and sold half of them as of last week. All tech specs and “bokeh balls” aside, they all served their purpose in helping to keep me afloat creatively but, in the end, it’s about making images that make you happy no matter what name is on the camera. The overall process, obstacles and all, is a part of the beautiful journey. Cheers.

Fun fact: the best camera is the one you have with you, and, if you plan ahead, the one you like using the most... Leica, Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Panasonic, Ricoh etc... If you enjoy using your camera, you shoot more. If you shoot more, your pictures get better. And, as you found out, the viewers of your work do not care about resolution, colour science etc. If it looks good to them, they will like it. (although some clients can be a little more demanding - fashion clients for example)

Hey Samuel. Just because a lens is f1.7 doesn’t mean you have to shoot it wide open. It’s one more tool, when the light conditions are appropriate. I’ve found my Q lens shines more frequently at f8, even if I love to focus manually at night using f1.7. Just because that guy said Leicas have to be shot wide open, it doesn’t mean it’s true. Specially for street where a good depth of field can sometimes tell the story better. About the comparison, it was obvious which one is the Fuji, but the comparison was difficult because we have You Tube resolution and the images were a second on the screen. You’ll have to consider another thing, that Fuji lens is huge, and probably not light. It’s size makes the shooter more conspicuous. As a Q street shooter, its a no-brainer. I can relate to your dilemma though. But for a moment you started sounding like that guy who’s looking for the perfect camera, we all do when GAS hits, but there’s no such thing. There’s only a perfect camera for how you like to shoot. The end result can be found many ways (mostly), but it’s not the destination…it’s the travel.

For me, Fuji's line-up will always be the Contax equivalent to Leica. A great street camera line-up that can taken on event, travel, fashion and wedding shooting - not quite as stellar as Leica but significantly cheaper. The nice thing is that the existence of Leica makes Fujifilm think harder about what they're doing when they design their cameras. Regarding the 18 f/1.4 I have it for my X-Pro3. It's great for weddings and events but I do find it a little too big for street. I much prefer the 18mm f/2 when I'm out and about, it's sharp enough, small and has a surprising amount of character. In a sharpness test wide open the Leica Q would demolish it utterly, but stopped down the 18mm at f/2.8 and beyond is perfectly fine for street work. If you have the funds sure Leica is King, but for those of us with less to spend an X-E4 / XPro3 and the 18mm f/2 is just wonderful for street.

I love your videos because it shows me some of the same things I go through with my equipment and the changes I go through in my shooting style. I shoot different with certain lenses than I do with others. When it comes to my art photography, I stick with basically (1) camera, the Sony A7iii w/TechArt Adapter. My lenses are adapted to fit the "M" mount to attach to the TechArt Adapter. All my lenses are prime, varies from Leica Ltm & M, Carl Zeiss (ZM) & (C/Y), Silver Ltm Canon Serenar lenses, Nikon manual focus lenses and Russian Ltm Jupiter 8 & 12. I use all my lenses because my projects call out certain optics that I feel I should carry with me for the type of render that I want to be in the end. But, now, I have a need to slim down what I have because there are lenses that I hardly use. I guess in the end, it's what I get out of the whole experience of the type of render of my end product that's important to me. It makes what I do even more special whether others can see it or not or even care. However, I do have a joy telling others, who understand what I'm talking about, what equipment I used to achieve those ends. So, I guess you can say that I enjoy those conversations resulting from others who can appreciate what I'm doing. For those who don't understand, I enjoy talking about the story behind how they feel when they look at my work. Like I said, "I get and love your videos because your journey with all of your changes is comforting..!!!"

I think the only *rational* reason to go for the Leica is iso performance and the extra megapixels that will allow you to crop 35 and 50 equiv with a decent amount of pixels left. It can be your do it all camera. But justifying the price gap for the user experience and the industrial design when Fujis are so nice to use too, that’s a whole different story.
@SamuelStreetlife
@SamuelStreetlife 2 года назад
Good point! As someone who used the crop modes a lot on the Q2 I would argue that all the crop modes will still feel like 28mm because it is just a crop and unfortunately the Q2 does some aggressive distortion correction in camera that makes the image look and feel wider than true 28mm. If you get all the lines in the frame straight then it isn't that bad though. Resolution is great, no question. But I was never happy with the crop modes.

I agree with all the points you raised. Good photo depend on the photographer not on the camera. The differences in picture “quality” (whatever that means!) between cameras are tiny and we over inflate them hugely. Our audience just wants a photo that captures their attention in some way. It’s the same with music: I have a collection of guitars, amps, effects etc. I obsess about tone and this sound vs that sound but when I play live audiences don’t notice and don’t care. They want to be entertained. I have a Q2 and also use Olympus m4/3 and love both equally. Just like guitars, it’s the feel and the experience of using them that matters to me. Sometimes they encourage me to play better or take better photos. The sound or picture quality differences are negligible and don’t make a badly played song or meaningless photo any better.

In the right hands, either of these cameras will get the job done especially for street and travel photography but even for professional work like portrait sessions. I've seen it done. That said, getting to the destination of the right kit for you requires experimentation. Technical specs of a camera body and/or lens are not enough. You need hands-on experiences with both to determine what works best for you as a photographer. For instance, I made a very hard decision to only use M mount lenses on all of my camera bodies moving forward. I own the Fujifilm X-Pro3, Leica CL, and LUMIX S5. I sold all of my Fujifilm autofocus lenses and the only autofocus lens I own is the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 and the 45mm f2.8 which I only use on my S5. I decided to only buy M mount lenses because they're the only lense out there that increases in value by comparison to the newer digital mirrorless autofocus lense and I can use them with an adapter on any mirrorless digital system I choose to shoot with as opposed to investing in a brand new lens system. You know what you're doing Sam and that's why you can do these types of comparisons and break up people's notions about who has the best camera. It's not about the cameras it's about the lenses and the Leica 28mm f1.7 lens on the Q2 has an edge over the Fujinon 18mm f1.4. That's it in a nutsell.

Great input! I agree that one should always make a decision based on own personal experience and not listen too much what the general consensus is recommending. And it is fun dsicovering new gear and experiencing different approaches from different brands :) Smart decision to invest in M lenses! I never enjoyed them much on crop sensors but they work well on most mirrorless cameras.

@@SamuelStreetlife thanks. It takes a bit getting used to on APS-C bodies for most but I treat my M lenses the same way I've treated most lenses I purchased for my Fujifilm kits over the years. To me, the key is to make sure you purchase close focus adapters especially for 35mm and 50mm M mount lenses. It makes life easier when shooting with those lenses on a crop sensor body. Thanks for another great video.

I Started with a rangefinder and progressed through TLRs, SLRs and ultimately degenerated to point-and-shoots. When I discovered the X-Pro2, my interest in photography as opposed to snap-shotting was reborn. The X-Pro2 led to an XE-3, nine lenses and then lured an X-100V into the stable. Then a Q2Mono pushed everything aside and has lead to an M10R with a 50mm Summicron. I look at the pile of gear that has grown in the last two years and wonder what has caused this. Your video gave me the answer. Primarily it is the enjoyment of the experience and the handling of cameras I really enjoyed. In the end, I think I will sell everything but the full frame duo. But then, maybe not...

I've been through Sony, Canon, Fuji and Leica SL camera systems, Q2 and I now have a 35 Summilux and an M10 R Black paint version (which I adore). I've lost quite a bit of money trading in camera equipment, but my journey has helped me realize that I like to carry a compact but powerful camera system, which is the Leica M 10R and Fuji X100V wherever I go. I did pre-order the Sony A7IV and a Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8. Enjoy the M10R!!

Great video. Thanks. I had the q2 and recently bought the Fuji 18mm 1.4. I absolutely loved the Leica. Q2 for the wonderful bokeh, and its ability to crop like crazy. The cropping in macro mode at 1.7 was amazing. I also liked the q2 for weddings and street in afc mode by touching the subject on the rear screen and it nailed tracking EVERY time. Fuji tracking on the XT3 is not so good. Face detection is not so good. The Fuji 18mm 1.4 is heavy. But…. It’s the flippy screen I love most. Most of my shots are at waist level. I prefer waist level. Therefore the Fuji system wins and I recently sold the q2. I don’t like the XT4 or XH1 because I need the flippy screen. I even use an old XM1 cos it has a flippy screen. Bravo. This one is hard because you are comparing apples and oranges (one is a camera, and the other is a lens / camera system). I would say there are advantages to each, and it comes down to what you prioritize. The Leica is a much simpler shooting experience, has a 47MP sensor (so lots of room for cropping), has better low light because of a full fram sensor, is going to be sharp wide open, has that macro mode on the lens, and probably has better weather sealing. The Fuji is cheaper, more flexible and has good performance, and has better options for video with their bodies. In the end it’s not image quality that is going to make the difference out there in the field. It’s going to be which camera makes you want to go out and shoot, which camera allows you to forget about the camera and just get the shot. I don’t have a horse in this race… part of me does want a Leica but I have not been able to justify it…. Same story for a Ricoh GR3. Single lens cameras have a bit of a draw for me…

I never tried a Leica camera on the field, but I had a couple in my hands, and obviously they are built very well. This being said, I don't think there is any reason to buy a Leica camera, except for the M serie, "IF" you really want to experience an old stile manual focussing and slow down your shooting process. I'd actually go a long way just to have a DSLR camera with a true split microprism and fully manual focus (Pentax?!? Hallo?!?), instead of the coloured pixels that always seem to miss critical focus. Leica R and Q are certainly nice tools, but in the end, aesthetics aside, there is objectively no reason to pay that much looking at the end results. You buy a quality camersa and a quality lens, but in the end what really counts is the image it delivers and the experience in taking the photo. That's why I don't dismiss the M, as it can live aside more mainstream cameras and still be meaningful in it's own way.

What you describe is diminishing return. The glass from Germany is top notch even compared to best Japanese glass. When used on the same body even with adapter, you can see the difference. Does it matter for interwebz sharing? Probably not especially we have all the LR magic going on and people are not going to open up a 40MP file at 100%. For work and street, always get one with fast and accurate AF. For those who enjoy the process without pressure, Leica is one of the best in current market with digital convenience. If Nikon makes an FM3a with digital sensor, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. That's the reason why I got a Z9 and an M11. Z9 got speed and max convenience. M11 got the old-school feel, form-factor and it's a deliberate process. Both gets the job done, just that Z9 is easier and allow more room for error.

Leica magic went out when they stopped producing the M line of film cameras. Considering that I have owned and still do own digital cameras from Sony, Fuji, Nikon, Canon and Olympus, and that I could easily make them all look like each other in software post capture, I'd bet that the end result from a digital Leica is pretty much the same. There was once a difference between Leica, Nikon and others because they used CCD sensors rather than CMOS which did produce a different digital look, but alas they are all the same or very similar these days. As far as Leica is concerned, I'd stick to my M2, M3 and M6 film cameras and leave the Leica digital alone. I have looked very closely at all photographs produced by Leica Monochrome digital cameras and hand on my heart, I don't like the look of the photographs. They shout digital and for a monochrome image that is not a desirable look ( too clinical, too 'contrived' , too unnatural ), sadly. There is no magic there, I am afraid.

The feather bokeh (when wide open) is the smoothest you'll find. The lens is designed to be sharp and shot wide open. The contrast, the colours and bokeh really will surprise you. I'm hoping OM Systems come up with a 14mm f1.2 or f1.4 lens, they've just released a 20mm f1.4 so here's hoping.

the only thing holding the fuji "back" compare to the Q2 would be resolution, the 47MPx sensor allows you to crop much more than any 26MPx that Fuji makes. That will probably change when Fuji releases that 40 ish MPx stacked sensor next year or so. If they put that sensor in an X-E5, X-Pro 4, there will not be any reason to really go for Leicas other than build quality, heritage, things like that

Of course, almost every modern digital camera with a decent lens will give a mostly similar image that the general person won't know the difference. I've used so many different cameras and lenses for digital and in the end (well, right now) it's "how easy is it to get what I'm trying to shoot?" and that's almost always a personal thing. I currently have the M240 and the oft-maligned 35mm Summarit f/2.4 and size, ease of use (for me) and how easy it is to get what I want are really hard to beat. To be honest, I looked at that honking big Fuji lens and didn't relish lugging that around all day over the 'Rit or that Q. Gear-fixing-everythingitis is real. My quest for the holy grail monochrome camera is still there (pixel peeping M Monochrom's vs my M240 for hours) and struggling with my uber-amazing-when-its-perfect DP2 Merrill (ISO 100-400 only thank you) to get something that tells the story I want with the least amount of work is why I keep searching. But 9 chances out of 10 I'll usually just grab the M240 and the 'Rit and get the shot, and I hope your combo does that for you.

The f1.4 is too honking BIG And... Expensive. If I want a quality 18mm- the GR! PS- nice strap on the Fuji, care to name? Cheers.
