Fuji X-Pro1 (£250 thereabouts, but mine was £60), Voigtlander Nokton 35mm f1.4 (£275), Fuji to M Mount adapter, (£30) = banging combination! Substitute the Voigtlander for a 7Artisan equivalent and it’s even cheaper.

Well that was quite the informative journey through alternative options. But for me, once the dust settles after paying for the new water heater, kid’s car engine repair, and dog’s teeth cleaning, I’ll be saving up for the Leica Q2M. Because it’s the system I want for the work I’m dreaming about. My Sony A6600 and Sigma primes work great but I long for one camera/lens, simplicity, and the work I long to create. Thanks for the video!

Ive really enjoyed this series. Ive been wanting to get back into photography for a while and when looking back realised my most fun times was when I rediscovered film in the early 2010s with my used Canon A1 and 50mm f1.4…however I wanted to avoid the time consuming element of film which was the scanning and post processing. I settled on a used Leica M10 with TTartisan 50mm f1.4 and 90m f1.25, plus a Voigtlander 35mm f1.2 mark ii. Now I’m in budget gourmet heaven!

The Fuji X100V is the closest to a traditional rangefinder camera I've used. I adore the hell out of it, so much so that it has become my most used camera over the last 18 months. I also have an R5 and enjoy all of its future tech bells and whistles. But having a smaller, extremely capable camera I can carry around all day without fatigue, has been a wonderful experience for me. As a DSLR (and now Mirrorless) shooter for 15 years, I've always had to consider what gear to bring with me before leaving the house (most times leaving empty handed). I bring the X100 with me everywhere I go, just because I can. Though I'm sure I wouldn't be so nonchalant with a Leica.

Ok so now that we have gone full circle, Tylenol in hand for the headache created by the endless options I have an idea. Just suck it up, save it up and buy a M6 for film or an M10 for digital and be done with it! (Having said that my Nikkormats do have that amazing build and feel and don’t seem to break. The Ft3 with a 28mm 2.8 ais and 55mm 2.8 ais micro make for an affordable vintage kit.)

I use the Leica IIIf, Canon L2 and the Canon 7. All of them work great for me. My Rolleiflex and Bronica SQ with lenses works great in medium format. There are so many options out there. For those looking for a good alternative rangefinders, there are the Voigtlander (made by Cosina), Bessa R is a great camera, I wish I had not sold mine back in 2009.

The absolute closest thing you can get to a Leica for cheap is the Aires 35 iiiC. It is basically a leaf shutter knockoff of the M3. Parallax viewfinder, great lens, bottom plate, etc. It's awesome and dirt cheap.

Lumix GX series bodies with PanaLeica lenses (I have a GX85, two GX8s and a GX9, I can’t bear to let go of any of them). These cameras, despite some shortcomings , offer a wonderful shooting experience. And I agree that the LX 100 is a fine choice (my pocket camera). If had to own only one camera, it would have to be the LX100.

Great series. After years and years....fuji X pro with adapted things...boom. Done. It is almost criminal how good the fuji's are....and you can spend a bit and get new ones and still be way under an M6. X pro 3 with 23 1.4...about 2200...or less. With one heck of a good camera that is really on par with an M10.

This was a great series! Thanks Hugh! My journey towards Leica went in reverse order. I started with trying to capture a Leica like experience, then just recently headed in that mid zone of harboring budget third party lens options with a Leica body, and now I’m considering the process of eventually getting Leica native glass. Your videos helped me think about what options out there are a fit for me now and what I can strive towards in the future. My plan is to get one Leica lens and it’s down to either a 35 or 50 for my M10-R. Testing and using Voigtlander equivalents now. We shall see. So much history in the brand and I’m really enjoying the pivot in my photography towards a more simple but challenging approach than the usual high tech cameras I’m used to shooting in my Sony kit.

I shoot with a Leica M3 and an Olympus Pen FT. Honestly, if you're looking for a similar experience (size, feel, mechanical excellence, optical clarity) to shooting Leica and you're not married to the rangefinder focusing system, I would 100% recommend the Pen F system. It is truly a joy to shoot.
@patrickjclarke
@patrickjclarke 2 года назад
Yeah, for street where you are mostly shooting at "f/5.6" or so, the Pen F is a great choice. If the Pen F was a true rangefinder with manual focus lenses it would tick almost every box I need in a digital camera for street.

My Nikon Z7II and Z primes are an unbelievable combo for image quality, but when I want the closest that I get to the Leica experience, its 35mm film. I have a dozen old Nikon and Minolta SLRs, but my FM2n, FM3a, are mechanical, light, bodies that pair with some outstanding vintage AI/AIS Nikkor glass, such as the 105mm f2.5, or 50mm f 1.2, and they are, absent rangefinders, the closest that I come to the Red dot experience.

Love this video! As a young photographer, I wasn't into the hobby in the film days. As a hobbyist, I wanted to try the rangefinder focusing - my eyesight isn't strong enough to focus accurately without aids at fast apertures (leading to some frustratingly out-of-focus portraits). But I can't afford to have it as a main camera of mine as a hobbyist, especially with the price of film. So I bought myself a Yashica Electro 35 GSN - full aperture priority, fixed 45mm 1.7 lens and £70 fully checked and CLA'd from a camera store. True rangefinder focusing, stunning metal finish and beautiful results. No manual exposure, but with workaround for exposure compensation using the iso dial Batteries + adapter for £10 It scratches my rangefinder itch and works perfectly - I have a Canon Eos 5 to scratch my film SLR itch (with the convenince of my EOS lenses, and eye-controlled autofocus) Love your work!

I find it very nice to use Leica M mount lenses on my Canon M100 and M6 Mk2. One can just use a Leica M to EOS-M adaptor. The best Leica heritage experience is using a Leica M lens and the ability to do zone focusing. Its OK for me to use focus peaking if necessary

One aspect of the Leica brand for me is the longevity / sustainability / backwards compatibility. They design and manufacture their lenses (and some cameras) to be useful on a time horizon that can be measured in generations. Thanks for this series of videos. Happy to be a Patreon sub!

@patrickjclarke

Great video and glad you covered this topic. Knowing WHY you want to shoot a type or brand or format of camera is SO important. For me there is a HUGE difference in "rangefinder-style" and a true rangefinder, and unfortunately in the digital world, I have TWO choices if I prefer shooting a Rangefinder...and the Pixii is really piquing my interest over my M240 for some of the things it does "better" than Leica for me. Also strange that in digital I LOVE using a rangefinder, but in film, I've found an SLR suits my needs better. It's probably because each frame is "more valuable" so with a modern SLR like the AMAZING Minolta Maxxum 7, I can make decisions much more quickly to capture a frame when my pocketbook says "make sure you make this one count". I also love that you mention that it's okay to choose something because of brand or heritage. I have a Rolleiflex because of this. I have a Ciro-Flex TLR that has taken waaaaay more great photos, but nostalgia (my dad had a Rollei) and the brand heritage drove to me to have a Rollei, even if I don't shoot it as much as the Ciro.

Excellent take as usual dear Hugh. Yes, diminishing returns play a crucial role for those like me whose photography is a hobby and not a source of income. It is basically impossible to justify Leica prices. Saying that "My next Leica M" will be a Fuji XP3 (or maybe XP4 if that exists earlier next year) I already have 4 excellent Fujinon primes, so why not?

I have been deep in the Canon EOS and C ecosystems since the 5Dii…still using 5Diii and a C70. Lots of lenses accumulated over the years. But I wanted minimalism, and the Q2 fit the bill. It inspires me. It feels elegant. I would have liked a rangefinder, but the Q form factor, and the forced use of 1 lens, make it ideal for the kind of work my photography professor stressed to me. In that class I used my dad’s Konica Autoreflex with a 40mm prime. Limitations foster creativity. And, by not attending NAB this year, I was able to fit the Leica into the budget.

Fuji GS645s rangefinders are underrated and hover at around 500 GBP which includes a spectacularly sharp 60mm (35mm ish on 35mm format) Fuji lens 👍. Leaf shutter also with flash sync all the way to 1/500th if flash is your thing. A joy to use and an absolute bargain. I bought one long after I’d bought into the Leica M system and those big negatives if scanned properly will hold their own against any modern M 👍

Be wary, though, the F-1n is not a light camera and you will have to match needle meter yourself. What we really need is a new, cheaper M mount, Digital FF camera with viewfinder split image focusing like the M10 than the Pixi. M10 used is still way too expensive used and there is much good used and new M glass out there like Voigtlander, Zeiss, TTArtisans, etc. If I recall correctly, Leica made some nice, less expensive cameras at one point, both for film and digital. Further, paying $300 for a Canon AE-program seems absurd, since it can break at any moment and probably not fixable, since parts have not been available for decades, unless there is a money-back, long warranty attached. Personally, I would recommend Nikkormats, since I have two that are almost fifty years old, have never been serviced, and still have a very reliable copal metal shutter. In general, metal shutter often hold up better for durability and reliability in my limited experience, which includes about fourteen such cameras and many more with cloth shutters...

Mint Yashica GX, the pinnacle of the Yashica line of rangefinders, with a 40mm F1.7, in black, has a tiny footprint, is sharp as a tack, and a fantastic meter, all for $200. That, paired with the GW680iii are more than enough rangefinder for me. I am SHOCKED you did not mention the 35mm film Leicaflex SL2, camera who's components were so expensive to produce, Leica lost money on every camera sold:)
