Leica has reissued the classic Thambar 90mm from the 1930s. We unbox and take a look at the new version of this classic soft focus lens, now in a native Leica M mount.

Tech Notes:
This video was shot using the Leica SL and 40mm Summicron-C cine lens, recorded in 10-bit ProRes 422 on a Video Devices PIX-E7. Sound was recorded using a Sennheiser MKH8060 into the Video Devices PIX-LR.

Are you sure on the CL, given the crop sensor? Is it the sensor size or pan-chromatic sensitivity that makes the lens unsuitable for the M8-series?

The filter is fascinating. Could you do a comparison with this lens and another 90mm lens with the same filter. Even if you just have to hold the filter in front of it. I'm curious the effect of just the filter. Thanks!

So many questions after watching this... What is the difference in IQ with and w/out the filter? I guess what it comes down to is: this lens really begs to have a full discussion of IQ at various apertures and light levels, not just an unboxing. Comparing to the classic version would be stellar.

@@hellatightdude They’re really not comparable. Sure they’re both old designs made today but the Thambar is a deliberately soft and characterful lens while the Noctilux was the best lens in the world when it came out. They’re two completely different looks.
