Great video. your personality and your clear explanations make it easy to watch a long video. Leitner ACS was clearly designed with some well thought out ideas. The style of t-nut they used on the pods, versus the old square bolts, is key to making this system even better. And yes, your good videos are how "normal" people can decide between very confusing choices for their rigs. And we know there are hundreds of choices for truck racks, especially for the specific needs of campers, overlanders, etc. I have owned Jeeps (JK & XJ) all my life, and they were loaded with mods based on finding a smart reviewer first. Just ordered my first Ford in 30 years, but I needed a pickup (F150 4x4) to haul the motorcycle and still pull my overland RTT trailer. Subscribed and will now have to binge watch your videos.

Thanks For all that Dan… I know exactly the boat you’re in, only I downsize to the mid size truck from years of full size… I have no regrets going with the gladiator as I do not tow Often if at all but I utilize the bed as you saw in the video. My brother owns a 2018 Ford F150 and it was leitner’ing soon as well.. Better fix some stout coffee if you’re bingeing my videos 😂.. they are long winded, but it’s with the idea that I provide as much information as possible so there is little doubt of anyone who may question anything. Clear, concise, well planned and delivered with no horrible distracting discordant music. Thanks. Leitner should deleted there horrible install videos and just provide a link to yours. ONE CONCERN: Looks like a bad person with an electric drill and socket could remove all six attaching bolts and walks away with the entire pod in less than a minute
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 2 года назад
I appreciate that fletcher. I do try to keep my installs straight and to the point. A bad person can do bad to anything at anytime. Yes the pods are simple as you say to remove. For the rack, I can’t say it would be fast or easy, especially with a RTT.. the racks are all vehicles specific so they adds another level of inconvenience to the Perp. You could use security nuts to mitigate the issues all together. The world can be cruel, but I’m pretty confident you’ll be ok with this investment. Haven’t seen a stolen post to date on any of my media followings.

I have dual XLs on my gladiator. One XL is cheaper than 3 of the small ones. I like the quicker and more convenient access to gear over anything in the bed. You can get a bracket for the backside of the XL for maxtrax boards. I mount gas/water/etc inside the truck bed. The pods are not waterproof. I haven’t had any problems in rain to date, but snow melt seeped through.

Great review!! I've had this rack for a couple of years, and been holding off on the Gearpod XL.. You've convinced me to finally get this. Can you help me with one question though. I have a Thule Tepui Rooftop tent. I always stand on the edge of the bed to tuck things in and zip it up when stowing. I see that there is a little gap between the edge of the truck bed and the GearPod. I wonder if I can get my shoe/boot in between there and manage to walk along the edge. If I can't it's not the end of the world, but it would be convenient. I always thought it would be nice to have a metal bracket that provided a metal platform to stand on when messing with the tent. Just a curiosity, but I'd appreciate a little measurement of that gap if you could

I’ve had my rack for 5 years and the pods for 4 years.. love them!! Use it literally every day.. as far as the step space goes that would depend on your foot and your bed length.. mine is only 5ft so not much room For the XL and my foot.. I use this door jamb step for what you’ve mentioned and it works great.. I typically stab on the jamb step, the tire or the tailgate amzn.to/49Xa7MQ

Awesome setup. Do you ever find that you wish you had a tonneau cover as well? Or does the GearPOD help alleviate that need for coverage in bad conditions?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland Год назад
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment… You pose a very good question and in recent months, there has actually been a tonneau cover solution for the leitner on the gladiator… Unfortunately, it’s very expensive, but if it’s something you’re looking for, it can be done. To answer your question, other than exposure to the element and potential theft I haven’t seen an issue that would benefit me by having the tonneau cover while utilizing the gearpods. When we are out camping, all the stuff in my bed is water proof (storage bin for dry goods, and fridge) and surprisingly, even on dusty trails, the stuff in the bed, stays quiet clean.
@ryankernus
@ryankernus Год назад
@@GatorOverland You're very welcome. Yes, I spoke with Leitner about that, and that EGR tonneau is quite expensive and also eliminates a lot of bed space. Your response is super helpful and encouraging though. Do you have any waterproof storage bins that you recommend in particular?

Yes, initially that is a drawback, but there are security bolts you can get in the same size if you needed added security, or use the hasp locks with cable.. I’d honestly rather them steal it properly than try and damage more things in the process of the theft. So far the only things I see commonly stolen in this overland world is trailers and chairs.. I guess we will see.. I drive a manual, so that eliminates most of millennial/Gen X theft 😂.

how are the 37s and the manual? on road? offroad? gas mileage?
@GatorOverland
@GatorOverland 2 года назад
Depends on your geographic location or wheeling style really.. the regear is essentially a drivetrain stress reliever. I had BFG KO2 37‘s with the stock 4.10 axles in the manual transmission for about 20k miles… My 37‘s true measurement is 35 1/2 @30psi and only weigh 10lbs more per tire and wheel set than stock 33’s (50lbs total) ...with 35 inch tires you can expect to be about 33-34 inch true measurement .… That said, I did notice a little bit of decrease in acceleration performance, and my use of sixth gear has gone away almost entirely… The 5% & 6% grades in Colorado while loaded down with camping gear revealed the need for a regear. I re-geared to 5.13 revolution gears to for driveline stress relief as a priority and increased fuel economy as a potential bonus (currently 16-18mpg as a southeast Texas flatlander), but achieved avg 18mpg on pure recent 3500 mile overlanding trip from Texas to Utah with RTT and 300”bs of gear and no regrets going 5.13.… I do not tow much, if at all with my truck… I would go 5.13 for torque priority over optimum fuel eco if I was towing with 37s. Sports/overland/willys (non-max tow options) have 3.73 gears and regear should definitely be considered above 33” tires. With the Sport S max tow/Rubicon/Mojave Its not directly necessary with 4.10’s, but If you’re planning on not going bigger than 35 inch tires, to be optimal, you should consider 4.56, and if you tow, 4.88. If you do increase your tire size and you drive an automatic transmission, it is very important that you flash the computer for the tire change, so that your speedometer is accurate and your shift points or optimum… You can really damage the transmission if you don’t… Especially if you’re towing a load… The ideal way to figure out what gear is best for your tire size is this simple math Divide actual measurement of bigger tire size by actual measurement of stock tire size, and multiply that answer by the original gear ratio. Theoretic example: 37” (bigger tire) \ 33” (stock) = 1.1212 4.10 (stock gear ratio) x 1.1212= 4.5969 Which would be your ideal regear ratio. Though it is very close to the 4.56 gear options it’s better to round up to the next gear set, which is 4.88 to maintain near stock performance. Going 5.13 would give you torque priority for towing. ReGears or not, I’ve found driving over 72mph puts your fuel eco in the dumper regardless of tire size. If you run a diesel, they all come with 3.73. If you’re considering a regear for 37”+ tires you need one gear set higher than the gasser.. I.e. if the ideal ratio for 37’s in a gasser is 4.88, the diesel with 37’s should go 4.10 to 4.56. Enjoy your JT

Yes, atleast 4.88.. as the 2 door is alot lighter it should be just fine.. 5.13 is going to be good if you decide later on to go to a truer to size up to 40 or heavier tire .. I may go 39bfg KO2’s next go around.. I think the 4.10’s will be fine for most of Utah, but you know what to do if you’re feeling under geared..
