The conversation at 34:40 was pretty funny to me because I also get huge pietà vibes from this scene. For anyone who’s unaware, this is a term for art depicting Mary cradling Jesus after the crucifixion, and the beast in the Grand Cathedral is posed in an extremely Christ-coded way, especially when compared to Michelangelo’s Madonna Della Pietà on display in the Vatican. In the corresponding spot in waking Yarnham, we found a beastly skull that triggered a cutscene: a conversation between Willem and Laurence (the “fear the old blood” scene). Laurence founded the Healing Church after departing from Byrgenwerth, so it stands to reason that this monster is what Laurence turned into when he succumbed to the curse of beasts. Weird that they would have such an important character here, lying dead.

Finally, Julia fights Ludwig at the end of the VOD. Item descriptions in the base game tell us that Ludwig was the first of the Healing Church hunters, and a rifle and sword bear his name. However, this is just a tribute, as Ludwig wields his real weapon in phase 2 of this fight. The “Moonlight Greatsword” is a FROM Software tradition, appearing in most games in the Souls series. Each variation of the sword is different - you can get it by finishing Ranni the Witch’s quest line in Elden Ring, cutting off the tail of Seath in Dark Souls, etc. Bloodborne’s version, the Holy Moonlight Sword, shares with its predecessors the ability to shoot lasers. I don’t think there’s any reason for this beyond that it’s sweet, but Miyazaki has been putting this weapon in games since 1994.

For real. The way Julia’s brain works seems so similar to my own, the way she focuses on stuff and how detail oriented she is, and I used to have the same kind of misophonia as her as well. We love you Julia! The way you play is perfect

I think people misunderstand because Julia doesn’t explore, doesn’t try new weapons, doesn’t use all of the game mechanics…she just wants to dodge and hit, and that’s okay, as long as she’s enjoying it.

@@twitchyb9950 Exactly, and I agree she absolutely doesn’t have to. That expectation in itself comes from people being used to games being played in certain ways, so they get upset / confused when presented with an atypical playthrough. If Julia _had_ been the type to look in every crevice and look at every weapon, people would probably complain that she isn’t getting used to / upgrading the weapons enough to know if she likes them, or Jacob would be forced to spend his free time grinding to upgrade weapons enough to test them out properly. It’s a game of cat and mouse, people will complain on either end, so why not let Julia do things the way she feels comfortable? The other thing is, Julia literally said before and at the beginning of this series that it would be like this. She warned us before it happened, and people apparently ignored her. She told us straight up she isn’t the type to use extra game mechanics or test out different weapons, she has trouble mentally processing all of the different actions that need to be done so it just doesn’t work out. I mean, she still accidentally presses X to hit, do we really think it’s the best idea for her to _actually_ equip something to X? It’s easier and more fun for her to just take the challenge as it comes rather than use all the benefits of the game to her advantage, for her every game is a strategy game on top of the preexisting game. We just gotta let her cook.

It's also worth remembering that Julia is playing these games for stream which means she's doing it for only 2 hours at a time with a week's gap in between. That really encourages focusing on the main goal and sticking with a playstyle that works over experimenting with everything new she finds. I definitely wouldn't remember all the little nooks and crannies I'd explored from a week ago and there's no way a new weapon moveset would start clicking for me if I had gaps like that. Julia doesn't play how I've played the game but she probably DOES play how I would if I were playing it with the SSS schedule.

FromSoft games can be incredibly stressful, and I feel that the best way to play them is to find a style that works for you and to brute-force the game around said style. If you don't think min-maxing or grinding are fun, then you shouldn't feel pressured to do that. Most Soulsborne games are flexible enough to allow for that, anyway. If this works for Julia, then it works for Julia, and any nay-sayers who don't like that should take a step back and chill out.
