Julia going quiet, completely stopping her attacks on Gascoigne, quietly murmuring out his attack patterns, and then nailing him with perfect parry after perfect parry after perfect parry is one of the most badass, most impressive things I've ever seen. I loved it.
She's seemingly got very good pattern recognition and general visual comprehension. Might be a result of being born deaf, but might also just be a personal skill from detail work.

Honestly kinda glad Jacob's backseating on path/geography more than he did for DS, if only because "play for 2 hours once a week" is a real unusual play schedule for first-time through these games that require so much mental mapping and have such intentionally vague progression signposts...
I think Alan Brickman just smashing you in the face repeatedly is one of my fave soulsborne attacks. It's just so disrespectful, there is a rudeness to it for sure.
it's humorously realistic in a game with a lot of eyebrow-raising resilience. dude like that hit you with a brick a bunch, you'd be toast, pretty much no matter how much vit you statted into.
I know there's some discussion of back-seating (both in the chat for this live and in these comments) but I genuinely adore Jacob's style of back-seating *just a little*. It's not "do I *want* Julia to know this?" it's based on "Will Julia suffer unnecessarily if I *don't* tell her this?" It genuinely strikes me as such a loving approach.

Yes! And I also loved how during the fight, Jacob started with trying to be helpful and encouraging, and when she was "yeah yeah yeah"ing, instead of getting offended or defensive, realized his support was not helpful to her in the moment and was quiet. I know we don't actually know them and I try to avoid getting parasocial, but I feel like we see so many little moments like these streams where they communicate and check in and reassure each other in such healthy ways, that they are probably my favorite couple to watch videos of

@@charlotte2845 Also even though it's a consumable the max carry count is so much higher than you have estus flask charges at the start of the game (or well past for that matter if you don't ever kindle like Julia's run), and you're continuing to pick them up as you go, so as long as you're stocked up there's not nearly as much of a need to be stingy on a per-"life" basis...
Every time I watch Julia play a soulsborne game it make me want to play one but then I remember that she’s almost unnaturally good at these games and I’m just straight up bad at them
For me it's more that I get frustrated because I can only play it on the PS4 and my TV is pretty small. I like to play games on PC nowadays where I'm at least closer to the screen.
Yeah I was excited she's doing it cos I love the whole vibe of bloodborne but I am just not a gamer so there's no way I could play bloodborne without getting frustrated and quitting immediately so I'm glad I get to experience it through someone that can actually play it lol

It's a really nice example of healthy communication in the Gascoigne fight. Julia's "hey my response may have seemed a little rude and sorry for that, but it was for this and this reason" and Jacob's "I understand I did it for this and this reason but will be more considerate of it" was effective and seemed very natural to them. That's the good stuff baybee
I mean this so affectionately: I adore how Julia sometimes acts like the Bokuto of the Dark Souls games, where she is simultaneously excelling and forgetting some of the basic mechanics
Yeah, I love my dog, but with every dog I've had, we establish a routine of 'bedtime' where they vacate the human bed for their own bed. This is for everyone's benefit. Humans sleep better, dogs sleep better. There are times when we'll wake up in the morning with a dog in the bed, and that usually means that I will wake up with a sore back because I couldn't move in my sleep the way I need to, but if it didn't wake me at the time, there's not much I can do. I think it seems so good *because* the characters don't talk much. Most of it boils down to "lore-ridden babbling" and "Vague advice in an accent", so less is more. 🤣

Julia beating the Cleric Beast first try is crazy! Usually I've seen people take about 10 tries their first time in Bloodborne! Good shit, Julia! Also, I don't think Jacob has explained to her that attacking after getting hit allows you to recover some HP (the yellow part of the HP bar).
I actually missed Cleric Beast on my very first runthrough. Didn't realize there was something there until after I beat Amelia. So my first CB fight went wonderfully, only because I was overleveled as heck.

My phrase for getting my two boys (cats) out when it's time for bed is "okay kids!" and then they realize, "oh yeah, it's bedtime" and they leave (mostly without resistance, but there are nights where they need to be grabbed)
Julia is doing so good at this. Im not super surprised, given how well she handled DS1, but this is probably the biggest shift in style for souls games and it's good to see her embracing the hyper aggro. Edit: 4th try Gascoigne? Julia you are doing insanely well.
Julia, I cannot express how happy I am that you also noticed that bit in the Mummy 2. First time I ever saw that movie was on the bus on a band trip I and I ended spending most of time traveling through South Carolina just desperately pondering out loud "Did they start the camera too fast? Did he miss his cue? Was he given that specific direction? Why didn't they just do another take? Did they really think they got it on that one? DID they another take and the one we saw was the best one? Why didn't they just edit down the pause before he says 'Noooo'?" Drove my seatmates crazy but I just couldn't understand how that got into a film that, CGI The Rock aside, was pretty competent. I say pretty competent because I won't call it 'good'. Brenden Fraiser's line of "oh no, not these guys again" when the mummies invaded the British Museum was the most sequel line that has ever been spoken

The first time I tried to play Bloodborne, I bounced off it HARD. Like, I couldnt even get past the first cluster of dudes by the burning werewolf. So for ages I was convinced I just sucked at Fromsoft games and didnt touch it again. But Julia starting this made me reconsider, and I picked up where I left off with the same save file and I guess it just didnt click the first time cuz I'm having an absolute blast now. I just beat the Blood Starved Beast on my first try and can't wait for what comes next. Also it was really funny to hear Jacob say that the Threaded Cane was the hardest of the starting items cuz thats the one I picked when I first started lol
One thing I like about these games is how different everyone's first time is. Cleric beast took me several days to beat, but Gascoigne took me 2 attempts. It's just kindacool how different people's play styles can be so different
48:20 To Julia, absolutely. I’ve had several generations of cats in my life, and the kitty only gets cuter over time. Even with health and attitude issues included, they just earn more love somehow

You can tell julia is just listening to what an npc is saying but not internalizing it at all when she isnt skipping the dialogue. Case in point, 1:54:31 shes sipping her drink, listening to his funny little voice, not reading his subtitles at all. You can tell jacob knows her so well too by the way ue immediately clocks her with "were you paying attention to what he said"

I absolutely love how in the moments leading up to 1:22:00 , Jacob is so focused like he's playing at the healing/punishing, but his face when Julia perfect sidesteps the next three punishments is so great. You can almost feel the "yes you can do this- yes-- YES" through the screen. 😅😂
I was the person coming in late asking if Jacob wanted a book suggestion. While I was happy to spark a bit, I felt pretty called out, but that was probably mostly because I'd woken up at 5 in the morning and opened Twitch specifically to ask that. I know Julia didn't mean anything by it. Also, for some reason the suggestion kept disappearing to get mod approval, which it never did. It's the gay urban fantasy "White Trash Warlock" by David R. Slayton, the author and protagonist are both gay, man gets a boyfriend, there's no real bigotry depicted but it's mentioned. It's not really anything great, but it's an okay read made remarkable by the gay.
dang, the music is just SO GOOD. did you ever notice most (all?) of the church/beast bosses are in 3/4 time signature? I believe cosmic bosses are in a different time.
First try Cleric Beast IS pretty nuts. But you know what? Julia has inspired me to try again because Soulsborne games are absolutely NOT the kind I am wired for, but I too love this aesthetic. And I'm older, I'm more patient, and I beat Cleric Beast and Father Gascoigne in under 10 tries each. Gascoigne, I said, more like His gASS GOIGNE to get chopped!
I am always amazed by how good Julia is at video game. And I love how she looks around and explores everything bc I'm watching as someone who will never play bloodborne I just wanna experience the art and lore!
The Cleric Beast took me damn near 4 days to fight as my very first soulsborne boss fight ever, the tight bridge was my absolute enemy and made that fight the *worst*. I took Father Gascoigne out in 4 tries, I very nearly had him on my first attempt but then we killed each other at the exact same time but it was too late for me so he didn't permanently die. I'm still slowly working my way through Bloodborne but I just got an industrial piercing a month ago and my only corded headphones that I can plug into my PS4 controller are over-ear, so I'm anticipating getting my ass thoroughly handed too me next time I'm in. The last fight I succeeded was the three dudes in the ruins
