The emperor losing to leman in an eating and drinking challenge is quite an entertaining piece of lore. I could only imagine how frustrated big E felt losing lol
_"Colder than a Space Wolf's smile..."_ --- Sargent Sidonus of the Ultramarines I've always felt that his wry assessment of the 6th Legion, and their Primarch by definition, was a little unfair. Russ may have been quick to anger, but it seems he would always stay his hand, often to his own cost, right at the moment when his rage might have consumed him and see before him instead a brother that he might have misunderstood and did not wish to harm.
Not all 4 of the challenges. The eating one is done by Loki in the myth. The myth is when Thor and his party go to the giant fortress of Utgard. Where they are challenged by Utgardaloki to 4 challenges.
Yes.. in norse mythology only thor tried 2 of the challenges of the king of giants. I actually did a peice on this on RU-vid! You can find it on my challenge! The three challenges in actual mythology was to out race a giant, eat more than another, and wrestle an old hag.
@@Kojar_Hellbringer Not quite. First challenge was to empty a chalice, Thor tried that, lift the cat, and wrestle a old hag. Then a eating contest, for Loke and the race was a human slave/Thrall they had just picked up. Turns out the chalice contains all the worlds oceans, and Thor drank so much it caused the tide. The cat was jormungand, the world serpent that goes around the world, so not something you can lift. The old had was aging, and no matter how storng, age will defeat us all. The eating contest was against fire that consume everything. And the race, turned out to be against though. And no matter how quick you are, you need to think about something before you do it, so though is always quicker. But the trolls that sett up these Challenges got scared by how close the gods got to succeeding. So, they would not challenge the gods again, until ragnarok.
Leman Russ!!!! The great Wolf! The king of fenris!!!! His emperor's executioner! I love lemans story, he was more than just a loyal dog that followed his master, or was a savage brute. I forget which story it is but, when Leman fought Horus he almost beats him and is sad to see what his brother had become. I hope the wolf returns in the time of need.
He is actually incredibly well read and smart not a savage brute a brilliant and savagely smart brute . In the same book after Lehman spears Horus with the emperors spear causing the wound to explode with light and that’s when he seen Horus as he was , the brother he knew of old on his knees before Russ with the emperors spear in his guts incredible story in the book “Wolfsbane” buy Guy Healy
He talks about being underestimated that some think he’s a brute but his wolves want him to show how smart he is but he wants the brothers to think of him in a certain way as they underestimate him same with like Horus he says I always wonders who would win in a fight course Horus thinks he would but the wolf king could have ended Horus a powers up Horus no less not to the power at the end of the sanguine tragedy of sanguinius or maybe it’s hard to tell either way Russ is the executioner for a reason he knows how the brothers fight being trained or guided by the emperor at the start I assume he was saying if anyone gets out of line this is my cheat sheet to the legions basically you will be my executioner with that info o think he was made for the eradication of legions just like the minotars of the lords of Tera legion they are an anti legion legion . Just a thought .
I would like to hear more of his relation with Malcador. He called him grandfather and of all the primarchs he had the best relationship with him. Also he was sneaky and Malcador was sneaky, would love to see what they did!
Ha! According to whom, Russ? There’s no more arrogant narcissistic primarch than Russ. There’s no way he held back or went into that fight expecting to lose. He clearly underestimated Angron and pivoted to the “teach a lesson” approach by having his sons surround Angron. It was a duel, Russ was a coward for bringing his sons into it.
@@jwb590 The emperor directly told Leman to hold back. And even if he were not ordered to, Angron would have lost anyways as he left himself open to the ambush of the wolves. As a world eaters player myself, I whole heartedly agree that Russ won.
@@uzrdutiutfiztdf3545 I said "Russ won" but what I actually meant was Would've won if he went all out. I said the wrong thing. But yeah going by what actually happened I still think Russ won the conflict at least
@@draugadrottin it is basically impossible to tell what would happen in an uninterrupted fight to the death between two very dangerous and nearly equally strong fighters. i would say russ wins about 60-40%, because of his higher battle intelligence. but russ had his orders and therfore he had a plan going in that would ensure that said order is fulfilled. i did not read the original source material, but i could imagine that russ even did not see it as a real duel, more like a tactical distraction for angron, so that his men could get in position
There are evidence pointing to 1 primarch possibly being held under the imperial palace, and i really like and choose to belive that.. Also it would possibly make for a great twist and great stories later.. Also it would make sense to me that Russ did kill one of the lost primarchs.. And that, that was one of the reasons he later held back when he was fighting a brother.. Because even though he most likely was one of the mightiest of primarchs, and know as The Emperors Executioner, he was clearly still one of the most feeling.. Fantastic character in my opinion.. Also im Danish so a little ekstra love for the 40K space Viking’s from here.. And yet another great video Remembrancer, THANK YOU FOR THESE..
Very good, you summarize these tales perfectly. You left out the part where Leman led Angron into an ambush and told his men to stand down to prove a point, the point being that Angron was less effective with the butchers nails because he was becoming a mindless brawler.
It was Russ who was created as the emperors executioner he was held back and taught how legions would fight and he’s basically a counter to them he did take out Horus in single combat with the emperors spear . So he could take on any other primarch just the same . They were all made for specific reasons . As another legion who were commanded by the eclesearchy are the minotaurs they are are anti-legion legion they study each legions battle tactics and evolve ways to counter them . Makes sense the emperor thought of this when a legion agents out of line a way to counter them .
The meeting is a reference to an old Norse myth. Loki eats quickly, but not faster then fire. Thor could Drink a lot, but he couldn't drink the ocean. Thor can Crack a mountain, but not the earth. There's also a bit about Thor lifting the world serpent in that myth. Just thought someone might like to know that.
The one with Thor and the Giant? The horn who's filled by oceans, the food made from a beast that comes back to life at the end of the day. He wrestled an old woman, strongest person in the giants court. Though he couldn't beat her, he did more than anyone else.
Would've been great if the Emperor used his powers to send the alcohol and food into the immaterium so he could beat Russ. All the while, some random demon gets covered in the stuff.
I know he gets alot of hate (and some of its fair most of it isnt and some is just bad writing) but I love leman russ I think what switched me on him was that when you look at his story he's everything the Traitor primarchs were and were not. He overcame basically the same flaws than each of them Jealousy, Frustration of leadership, having the worst burdens forced on him, not actually caring much for the imperium and ore about home. primal nature , psyker powers being overzealous to lacking confidence and being too bloodthisrsty but he managed it and often by the skin of his teeth too he's barely a good man but in a way its all the more glorious considering how evil he could have become. Badassery is one thing and yes russ was the strongest but real badassery is overcoming everything that might destroy you and those you care about and sometimes resorting to terrible things to do it. In that regard hes a true hero.
I've watched all of your videos and am hooked. You're a great addition to the 40k community. You've got a great style and can keep a viewer interested(me at least). Can't wait to watch you explode in popularity! I'll be sure to watch your career with great interest!
Love that these stories mirror closely to that of Thor against old age, the “drinking contest” where he dropped the level of the seas and be able to lift a jormungandr in disguise.
fun fact the three challenge are the same of a Norse myth about Thor who drinks the ocean try to fight the manifestation of old age and try to lift a cat who in reality was the Midgard serpent
Russ is by far one of the worst written Primarch's during the Heresy. The authors did him dirty. I hate that Dan Abnett's fanboy writing made Dorn look invincible. It's really, really cringe.
Lemun russ, a man dressed as a beast. I love this guy because his exact opposite is my other favorite primarch Lion L. Johnson, a beast dressed as a man!
The emperor wouldn’t have had Malcador mentor leman if he was solely to be his executioner. The emperor wanted Leman to be more, however he couldn’t see it.
There is a fantheory that states primarchs are greater warp entities given human forms , wich explains their superpowers and how Corax become a demon. He isn't becoming a demon , he is embracing his true self. Russ going straight for the Eye of Terror after learning the "truth" about the primarchs also supports this theory imo.
@@OljeiKhan i have heard that. I believe the bodies Emps created had to be able to contain the energies of the entities as well. It definitely makes sense.
@@emperorconstantine1.361 that’s alright my guy leman already hated what he did to Magnus and regrets it but that was just another blow to the already wounded wolf king
Ight so I kinda just assumed since he's a Primarch Viking wolf man, and his namesake is the main battle tank of the Astra Militarium I assumed he was pretty cool, but now ik LEMAN RUSS IS FECKING COOL lol.
💙🔵 Imagine: powerful Chosen of Tzeentch always at war (with the Lord of Change Tchzen of the Silver Claw at their side)! Who with their mighty fire serve the God of Magic in the pure way, with victory in battle. So do his Sorcerers, who teach battle to the zealous Warriors of the Architect of Fate. With war they bring eternal change for Tzeentch! Tzeentch must look like Norsca, and there are several Champions who prove it: Tchar'zanek, Aekold Helbrass, Albodi, Melekh the Changer. "My name? Long ago such worthless details fell from memory. I know only the lust for glorious battle -- for blood, for victory! I seek only the Eye of Tzeentch -- his favour, his grace, his Dark Gifts -- that through them, I may be remade -- reborn! Why do we raid your lands? Why do we burn your homes? Why do we flay your flesh? To serve the Lord of Change and his magnificent designs." Do you know what the Screamers of Tzeentch must look like? Long tail but raven wings and beak, without claws however because being creatures of change they must always fly and never stop. And since purple, pink, and gold (Slaanesh) are aspects that simply don't go well with Tzeentch, then blue, azure, and silver are his only true aspects. I like to imagine (even before the Heresy) Magnus and the Thousand Sons with the symbol of the Egyptian Raven (let's eliminate the symbol of the Egyptian Scarab, it is an insult to Tzeentch).
I love when Imperium apologists look at the butchery of Prospero and go "but Horus told him to". If one of your twenty greatest general thoughtlessly carries out a genocide of a friendly and civilian population without so much as hesitating there is no excuses. Russ is as bad as any daemon
"Leman" in modern English means "from the valley", but in the culture he's based on it means "girlfriend", "concubine" or even "sidepiece". If you called any Germanic tribesman "Leman" he would have gutted you on the spot. That being the case, it's hard for me to take Leman Russ seriously.
I'll never understand why Russ is so popular. He's the dumbest of the primarchs and thanks to his intellectual handicaps he can be considered the third primarch that helped heresy the most just after Perturabo and Mortarion. Destroying Thousand Sons and forcing Magnus into chaos was one of the most important victories ot Chaos. And still Russ is considered loyal.
“There are no wolves on Fenris” is a theory that the creatures aren’t called wolves on Fenris. The Imperium uses terms like Wolf Lord, Wolf Guard, Fenrisian Wolves, Thunderwolf, and Wolf Claws, but the SW use the fenrisian language and none of the words sound alike. Instead of Wolf Lord they use Jarl and instead of Wolf Guard they use Thane. It’s theorized that some idiot translated 14 or so different words into the word Wolf
'Listen but closely Brothers, for my life's breath is all but spent. There shall come a time far from now when our Chapter itself is dying, even as I am now dying, and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then my children, I shall listen for your call in whatever realm of death holds me, and come I shall, no matter what the laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime.' -Last words of Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves
I must say i never liked liman russ he was to much trigger happy and hungry for personal glory only good trait was that he didn't had butcher nail or big e had anther angron at hand.
You keep using Leman’s last name as “The Russ.” The Russ implies his whole tribe, as he is one of the Russ. It later became part of his title. If you want to use his last name singularly, when you are just referring to the Primarch himself, simply say Russ or Leman or Leman Russ. You are using a plural form instead of the singular.
Leman Russ!!! The epic failure!! 😜 If it was not for Angron he would have been the least successful. At least Angron has a really good excuse for his problems. Russ has none other than he sucks. He has no major victories, but is responsible for for the worst failures in Imperial history. By any reasonable measure he has done more damage than good. And no he was not loyal is loyalty is measure by during your duty.
