For all of those who wanted to see tiny lemons, bonsai are not tiny species of tree. They are no different than the large versions, they are just frequently pruned like this to be kept small. If it did have fruit, it would be a tiny tree with big lemons. I wish truly tiny lemons existed, that would be a adorable!!

They're finally big enough to start training towards bonsai. Growing trees is my favourite hobby! Maybe one day, once they're impressive enough, I'll be able to send you one of the 11 lemon saplings which was created because of this video! I love your lemon tree. If tou dont cut the big roots, they will dominate and you will be left with just one or two roots. If you cut the big ones of you give space for all the smaller and weaker roots. Easy to grow your own from most lemon seeds you would get with water water and lemon at a restaurant. I have several. They stay indoors in a badly-lit area. I've had some for ten years. (No flowers, no fruit, of course). As they have been kept in very small pots, I have not had to snip them. Pruned one, one time because of the badly-lit area where it sits - top-pruned even, which is a terrible thing to do.

Thank you Nigel. Your bonsai artistry is exemplary. One suggestion my Dear Wife and I offer, has no relation to bonsai per se. Rather, it pertains to the experience of a bonsai video of this high quality... namely, Patricia and I are seniors, and thankfully escaped the era when everyone was programmed to require loud, fast-beat music ( a.k.a. noise ) in order to sit quietly long enough to learn something without falling asleep. Your videos are not thus overburdened, but we hope they will not escalate in that direction. Aqain... well done, Teacher! ... Barry and Patricia

I just had to keep it in full sun after all the caterpillars flew away as beautiful butterflies! Nature has its way of reviving itself. I loved plants as a kid, and also loved eating lemons, so my mom bought me a Meyer lemon tree when I was about 9 or 10. I am now 29 years old and my tree is still alive and kicking. I put it into a big half barrel container before I moved out a few years ago. in 2018 I came home to PA for thanksgiving, ate a lemon off the tree and brought the seeds with me back to Miami Beach where I live now. I now have 2 three-year-old lemon trees from my original tree thriving, and they make me smile when ever I take care of them. citrus trees are so hardy. you can cut them back to the stump, not water them for weeks, over water to high heaven and they will still thrive! in my 20 years of citrus growing, the only thing that scares me are those scale bugs. bugs are the killers in my experience and I have had a few close calls over the years! anyway, nice vid, I watched all the way through and was shocked to realize it was an 189 min vid! haha

Nigel, I'm too scared to completely defoliate a tree. What is the principle of defoliation? Can I not just remove a larger leaf from time to time?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 7 лет назад
Total defoliation can knock back the vigor of a tree so it produces a new set of branches with leaves that are smaller than the ones that were pruned off. It can only be done with a tree that has a lot of vigor and it can be a risky operation. It is a useful technique because you can study the bare branch structure on trees that don't normally lose their leaves. It is also used to prepare a tree for a show, it gets a uniform colour and size to the leaves and the leaves don't have any long term insect damage. Partial defoliation is a preferred technique and is used to thin out the vigorous zones on a tree, so light can reach the inner branches for back budding. If the lemon tree was weak and the weather bad, I wouldn't defoliate it.

I must admit, as a newcomer to this art (or gardening in general, to be honest), such severe trimming of both trunk and roots seems like a very harsh treatment. I'm growing a few seedlings, one year old at the moment, and I can't even make myself cut them down, not to mention this much pruning. However, given the fact that this lemon tree is 2/3 my age, I have no doubt that the next update will be just as amazing as this one and maybe I will gather the courage to adopt the clip and grow method. Thank you for the time and effort that you put in the videos and bonsai, of course!
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 6 лет назад
This was quite a severe pruning! The tree recovered very quickly and is growing really well. It is very important that the tree grows freely for an entire summer, before attempting this. Happy growing!

This is done to shape the plant into a miniature tree form. The tree is just a regular lemon tree and would grow into a large tree in a warmer climate. Here in Canada, I have to bring it indoors for the winter.

Bonsi-R- Us I dont have grow lights :( I'm moving them inside with as much natural light as possible but most of the time only the strong ones will make it (so i'll be left with about 20-25 little trees in spring) But when they grow bigger I have to further select them because I cant fit all of them inside for their second winter. If they are already 3 to 4 years old I can keep them wrapped up on my balcony close to the house.

I have a new lemon tree I'm going to make a bonsai with. Have you ever had lemons grow on one? And have you ever tried using epsom salt in the soil? Maybe the salt would help with the ants?

Same question: I read that lemon trees like a lot of Magnesium and that epsom salts improve Magnesium levels... are their any real benefits?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 7 лет назад
I would need to let the tree grow freely to get flowers and then fruit. Some day I intend to do this! I have never used epsom salts on my Lemon tree, but I read it is good for them if they have a magnesium deficiency. Here is an article... homeguides.sfgate.com/much-epsom-salt-dwarf-lemon-tree-93444.html

If I let the tree grow through a spring cycle without pruning it, it should flower and then bear fruit. I will be doing this in the future, when I get a little better branch structure. The tree is over 20 years old now and should flower well.
