Her last television appearance on one of my favorite television shows when I was growing up. I think I remember watching this very episode. I wish Rosie had a show like this now. This show had common respect, family oriented, and a good dose of non antidepressive positivity to it.
Wow, Lena has such class and humbleness, that is so lacking with the stars today. Stars today "Know Their Great" and they love looking at themselves. She didn't like her voice, but I think that's what made her work so hard. She has a great, one of a kind voice, I don't want her to sound like Aretha, Ella, or Billie, all of them are great, but she had her own style that was lovely, no one can sound like her, in her day singers had their own style, unlike today, these girl singers sound alike.
I know it doesn't make much difference but I'm a Leo. I would just like people to know that when you said that she and you were Cancers, you meant that she and you were born between June 22 and July 21. I don't think I need to tell you that when most people see the word "cancer," they think not of the astrological sign, but of the disease. Anyway, enjoy the rest of the day.
Yvonne Bryant I'm sorry if I've disturbed you and you're right, there are people who do know the difference and more power to them. Heck, I even know the difference. I'm just saying that there may be some people who might take the word "cancer" and think incorrectly as to what the person is referring to. It's silly, I know, but it happens. That's all I'm saying.
We never know until it is too late how our life choices affect that of our children. I will never forget the sadness I saw in her son's face. I worked with him for about a year -- he always talked about his mother and how he left him. I am sure, she did not know how much that hurt him. Although she may not necessarily be the blame --- she did leave him. Although I so love Ms. Lena, I cannot help but wonder how she felt about her son.

@yurherenow - we all get old (God willing). How about we respect older people. They might be slower and not as well as they were when they were younger, but many did so much so that we could have a better life. Show some respect!
In 1967, I worked with her son. He told me that when his mother divorced his father (Jones) she left him with the father and she took the daughter. I thought that was just terrible. I was so sad to read he had died in 1971. He looked just like his mother.
@erc355 Lena was at NY Presbyterian Hospital when she died. Someone said that she was being treated for another illness then had a heart attack. They think she had a DNR and was not kept alive by extraordinary means.

I worked with Ted at Verbum Dei Catholic High School. The ONLY reason I believed she was his mother is because he looked just like her. What happened to him? He seemed like such a nice man. He seemed sad about not being with his mother.
MGM tried and tried to get roles for her and couldn't because of the times and lack of financing, it's all in the James Gavin bio of Lena. It wasn't going to happen in the 1940s.
I watched Lena in an interview; she hated Hollywood because they wanted to put her in roles wear she was half naked, playing a native girl or a prostitute. She was placed on suspension because she WOULD NOT PLAY A MAID OR A WHORE. Google the PBS American Masters program which is entirely an interview and clips of Lena. She told her story. I believe her. Also, her husband did not let her take her son when she filed for divorce. He told her to take the daughter, but he would NEVER let her have her son; she said it was a pain she carried with her all of her life... not being able to raise her son and daughter together.
