@@julianmisaacs Actually, it was number 1 in New Zealand, on local radio and also in several specific cities. Likewise, reaching number 3 in the entire country is obviously a huge success, it was also #3 in the UK.
I woke up from a dream at around 1 o'clock this morning and this song was playing in my dream. I woke up singing it. I'd not heard it or thought about it for years. I loved it as a child back in 1979 and, yep, still love it now.
Lena lovich came to my house in the mid 80s i lived just outside of Detroit. she is my best friends aunt! She gave me and my sister a bag of pistachios. I vividly remember her having very long black painted fingernails! True story!
Saw her at City Gardens in Trenton, New Jersey a thousand years ago...before cell phones...before computers...before MTV...yep I'm that old...but I have memories that you CAN'T see on RU-vid... ;)
u and me both sister check this out great early punk video, was just getting into it out of h.s. one year ....then came my talking heads, blondie, the clash, yes this lady saw the clash in 81 .....martha and the muffins, the motels, The Tubes, the ramones a dozen times and in bars, not big halls, the cars, Romeo Void, great one hit wonder, Echo and The Bunnymoon their killing moon so intense ...B52s three times ......all i can remember ....no saw X too Show less REPLY
But some people had the foresight to tape their life in the eighties. Since you are a near NY'er @5O, you should check out Nelson's channel '5thavenue project' -especially if you dug the east village scene. xoxo.
I've never ever heard of Lene Lovich, and never heard her music, but I heard this on the radio the other day and liked it, looked for it and was gobsmacked that this was from the 70s. WTF it sounds (and she looks) so modern!
She was way ahead of her time. There were so many bright and creative artists from the 60's thru the 80's... then it all sort of fell off the planet. MTV helped a lot but then it went off the tracks with "reality tv"...
@@johnnymfan5065 My point is that these women were/are all pioneers who blazed the trail for strong female vocalists. Whether one was "more tuneful" or not is kind of irrelevant and comes down to personal preference. They had different styles, but each one was/is genuinely original.
A truly original and unique song like this comes to a writer once in a lifetime. Absolute genius, and this timeless, quirky classic will be a hit again, when somebody in the media reintroduces it to a whole new generation. 👌🎤🎶
"Betty Boop on bad acid," said a friend of mine, but I think she was jealous she hadn't had the concept first. Lene's a true original. How many Goth girls today even know who she is?
My first ever favourite song.. age 4 I used to spin round to this. As a Goth, punk and rocker I feel proud this was my catalyst !! I like alternative and it will always be an amazing track.
I've remembered this one for more than forty years - the name of the singer too. Yes, those years around 1980 and on towards the mid-eighties were incredibly innovative in music.
If you think Lena is incredible, give And The Native Hipsters a listen. The first time i heard this song was on holiday many many years ago. Sat on the floor in a holiday chalet in Wales playing cards one evening with my brother and sister and mom listening to John Peel on the radio. I only tracked the artist down about five years ago and bought the album. You know it's musical gold when you read the track listing and see such titles as Baboon Climbs a Mountain! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qCJVminVFRQ.html Oh, and don't forget Klaus... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HmLk2vSXXtk.html
This music video was one of the first that I ever saw. I was babysitting in 1980, and watching a show called "Night Flight," and this came up. Loved it then & now. Lene is dark, quirky, & weird (in a good way) and she made quite an impression on me.
Watched the Black Mirror episode "Demon 79" last night and heard a snippet of this song towards the end of the show when the main character is driving in her car. I immediately recognized it from my childhood but couldn't put my finger on it. Looked it up and it was this song. Cool song!
I was 16 back in 1979 when this came out, haven't heard it for decades! It's weird to finally see the clip, ahh the magic of RU-vid! She was 30 when she made it and must be nearly 70 now!
Although technically its new wave which spread late 70s and 80s so the sound is similar and the sound is different from most 70s and this single was rereleased in 80s
This is so brilliant in so many ways that I can hardly even begin to describe it. Which is, no doubt, why more people don't bow down before this song and its brilliant creator.
great early punk video, was just getting into it out of h.s. one year ....then came my talking heads, blondie, the clash, yes this lady saw the clash in 81 .....martha and the muffins, the motels, The Tubes, the ramones a dozen times and in bars, not big halls, the cars, Romeo Void, great one hit wonder, Echo and The Bunnymoon their killing moon so intense ...B52s three times ......all i can remember ....no saw X too
And lets not forget Kate Bush..she up on dat Mt.Gothmore.Think about it..female rock stars were largely a product( except Joplin) before 70s..these beasts were visionaries .But hey..2021 has St.Vincent..cmon
I remember when Lene and her band played the Hot Cub in Philadelphia in early 1980- she was a goddess- after her set she came out and sat on the steps with us and was hanging and talking- she started apologizing for her performance because she had caught a cold and couldn't do the OOH OOH OOH OOH part of lucky number- she was so sweet- and of course her performance was flawless to us!!
And of course, here in clueless states of America it didn’t even chart, despite the fact that Lene Lovich is from Detroit. The #1 song here at the time was probably some godawful yawn-inducing chunk of crap by Foreigner or Journey.
Yeah I was just taking a stab at that, hence “probably”. I haven’t looked at the actual billboard charts for 1979 in a very long time. I just remember stuff like Journey, Foreigner, and Styx was really popular on American FM radio at the time. Also, disco was still very popular that year. I remember that Donna Summer had a few big hits, and there was stuff like Gloria Gaynor, Chic, and Anita Ward. All I know is that while Lene Lovich was doing very well in places like Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and the UK... she didn’t even crack the top 100 in her own home country... where the charts were bogged down by disco and bad rock. I never cared much for ‘My Sharona’, though that first Knack album had some other real power pop gems on it, like ‘Let Me Out’.
I remeber this was a huge New Wave hit in the 80's (I'm old). It was so catchy with her ah oh ah oh sound she had people making that sound singing in the hallways at school - I remember hearing that all the time.; I still like it centuries later.
This was one of the first things I ever saw on MTV, at a relative's house who had cable, and I still remember that ah-ooh-ohs. I thought that I was so out of touch because I hadn't ever heard of such things before. Only now do I realize that this was kind of stage presence was completely unique.
Didn't know till recently that Lene Lovich did backing vocals on The Residents - "Picnic Boy" off Commercial Album. She's vastly underrated as a performer, highly creative/original. I'm sure theirs not much that the likes of Lene Lovich/Nina Hagen couldnt do. They're highly talented musicians and artists alike.
Exactly the same thought!! 40 years gone in a flash. The other belter from then was (This) World of Water by New Musik. Still a smashing number. Regards. Rod
I bought this single at 9yrs old from wheelers with my pocket money. No doubt played it to death..loved it..still love it..bought a lot of toyah Wilcox too and Kate bush..i was that kind of kid..lol and my favourites - Vienna. And golden brown.
It's been so many years since I had heard this great jewel from my 80's. Thank you very much for having them in your favorite songs and for that I could listen to it again. I am 55 and very happy
I love Lena's counterpartner. The post-post-post punk artist Nina Hagens. I remember in the early 1980's KROQ radio station (Los Angeles, California) would play their music often.
And because Lene and Nina truely match, they did a song together: "Don't kill the animals". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bVnVcbuoyWU.html
Lene Lovich and this song is a great example of how Auto-Tune has ruined the music business. The unique character of Lene Lovich's voice would be completely lost if this great work was subjected to Auto-Tune. Nuance is so important, and this woman was/is a master of nuance.
Autotune really is the death of everything. Just the WORST thing that ever happened to music by a long shot. We can thank Cher for kicking off that horrible trend.
@@Brewzerr That's not really fair on Cher. She can sing well, and perform live, but it was used as an effect on that song, not because she can't hit a note. And it was clearly used in an obvious way, not to compensate for incompetence. She can't be blamed for others using it to compensate for their inadequacy.
'Anyone here go to Marylin's Backstreet Disco(Pasadena, CA) on a Sunday night in 1979-80 era? I definitely remember this song along with Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello, Ramones, X, and alot of other wierd/quirky greats of that time. Nothing you'd ever hear on 'top-40 radio or classic rock stations, but that's what made it so special. 'Love to hear from you...
Very funky! Cheers from a lover of decent (!) music in Sweden! We are not alone - at all! Peace! This lovely tune is a real classic! God bless! And hot damn (!) give us more!
Omg i forgot about lene lovich. Brings back so many memories as well as nina hagan. If the band missing persons hadnt jogged my old memorie i might have never rediscoverd her.😌very happy
