This was a return visit to replace some bad bearings on a Lennox Package unit, we ended up replacing both bearings, both blower wheels, and the shaft.

A vacationing penguin is driving his car through Arizona when he notices that the oil pressure light is on. He gets out to look and sees oil dripping out of the motor. He drives to the nearest town and stops at the first gas station. After dropping the car off, the penguin goes for a walk around town. He sees an ice-cream shop and, being a penguin in Arizona, decides that something cold would really hit the spot. He gets a big dish of ice cream and sits down to eat. Having no hands he makes a real mess trying to eat with his flippers. After finishing his ice cream, he goes back to the gas station and asks the mechanic if he's found the problem. The mechanic looks up and says "It looks like you blew a seal." "No no," the penguin replies, "it's just ice cream."

For someone who isn't a mechanic or machinist you did a perfectly adequate job. Nice work. You got it done and that's what counts! One tiny 'pro-tip' if I may: Consider putting anti-seize compound on those shafts where the pulleys mount. You'll thank yourself in 5 years when it's time to replace them again :-)

4" grinder with a cut off wheel ,hammer and chisel to break the cast and cut the bearing in half.I dont even bother to pull bearings off anymore if I`m putting new ones in.Saves a bunch of time and frustration.

Sawzall you can fit right in the blower housing with everything still attached. 4 cuts one on each side of inner blower wheel housing and both bearings unbolt with outer shaft still attached and wheel will come right out of the housing. no need to mess with bearings if your replacing everything. but grinder is perfect if your just replacing bearings or a stubborn pulley/flywheel

I know I'm commenting on an old video but just thought I'd say thanks for making videos. For whatever reason I like learning stuff I'll probably never need to know and your channel has been great to just sit back, relax, and learn new things. It helps me calm down after working long hours, even the ones where you get a bit frustrated on video. Your emphasis on safety, common sense, and your mindset of following a basic standard procedure is actually really good to bring to anyone's life regardless of occupation. Suggestion: for keeping those set screws and whatnot from going AWOL, carry a small magnet in your bag; stick it somewhere convenient on the case of the equipment you’re working on, and stick the screws to the magnet.

Next time, try drilling a pilot hole in the end of the shaft so your puller doesn't walk all over. Oh, I forgot to tell you now we cut steel for Manitowoc! Small world I guess. Keep up the good fight!

or you could try to use a punch to take out key way and then just tap in 180 degree places on the back of pulley to walk it off with a lot of lube, had that work before, and is easier if don't have second pair of hands to help hold puller, of course have to have access to back of pulley, and you are right that lots of lube and sanding will be your best friend, and cleaning off with rag, you did a great job!

I didn't get a good look at it but some of those pullers have blunt ends so a pilot hole might not have helped.

Thank you for putting together all of these videos. I learned so much about this trade and your valuable information is life changing. You don't get the opportunity very often to learn from someone that's been trained and is very professional. I spent 4 years working for an electrician making 12 dollars an hour when I was laid off due to no work. I went to work for a local business owner selling automotive paint for 10 years. I was supposed to take the business over and was content on growing the business but the man sold it and put me on the street. You have given me so much knowledge that a local refrigeration contractor here wouldn't care to do. If I can't get back into the electrical trade, HVAC-R is a very good alternative. Watching you work with apprentices and showing them how to become a good technician is priceless. Having these videos at my fingertips is something I will cherish for years to come. Again thanks for your time making these videos.

I work for Brinco in NYC , good job ! You must always order shaft,bearings and squirrel cages for double blower units, not worth trying to save shaft and blower wheels.. they get damaged trying to free them, I cut the shaft 4x and pull out the wheels, I leave bearing brackets in place.. you have some of the best basic skills I ever seen!! That comes from good schooling and great mechanical skills, bless you and your family !!

Next time - Center punch the end of the shaft so the puller centers and pull on the hub of the pulley not the outer edge

One Sunday morning at work I had to pull a bad magnetic clutch off my spray system. Working by myself and with virtually no easy access I fought for 3 hours pulling that clutch off the shaft and the key was stuck in the keyway. Being a field fix I had very limited tools and resources to work with. I ended up using so much torque the pulley puller had threaded itself into the mag clutch fusing it permanently to my puller. While I lost my pulley puller during this fix I managed to get the truck fixed and running for Monday morning.

@@HVACRVIDEOS FWIW - I use a velcro strap and place it several times around the claws of the puller to keep it from coming off. I also use a battery powered dremel with carbide pointed stone to carefully grind a divot into center of shaft to keep it centered (I've also used a socket between puller shaft and blower shaft). Good video BTW. Makes Covid-19 days and nights go by better (along with a 🍺)!

I’m not telling you what to do or how to do your job but in my experience I always try to not install my puller on the OD of the pulley. If I can’t reach the center I’ll install a bearing puller behind the pulley on the shaft and pull on the ID to prevent cracking the pulley. Like I said I’m not condemning you or being factious because things doesn’t always work out as planned. You may not have a bearing puller, Your out in the field and got a smaller selection of tools than you have back at the shop... There could be multiple variables so I’m just offering my opinion.

Agreed. I accidentially bent a pully that way once (a smaller one), and had to replace it to get the balance right again.

I have three suggestions. When I start my channel, I will illustrate them. 1) Over the years, I have found the open weave sandcloth to be a better choice than the sandpaper. 2) Get a Posi Lok puller. You will have none of the grief you experienced here. 3)Never hammer on a sheave. The ball races in the motor will be damaged. Instead, treat the shaft, and if you have to, rub sandcloth inside the sheave until you can easily slide the sheave on the motor shaft without the key. Then, fit the key, and you're done. No hammer.

What a coincidence we just changed the saddle bearings on a 3 phase exhaust fan on monday. And we were prepared to be on the roof for 4 hours because the bearings were 40 years old. Believe it or not the bearings came off easy peasy. We were thrilled. Expected the worst but ended up with the best outcome.

This video reminds me of a job at a BMW dealership where the company I was with had installed a new 50 ton rooftop unit (gas heat & a/c). There were 4 ganged squirrel-cage blower wheels on a shaft with a universal joint halfway. We had a blower wheel that got shredded on one of the middle blowers and had to disassemble the unit to get the wheel off and replace it. They sent 2 of us to do this. Apparently the unit had never been started prior. The duct leading down to the showroom was new as well. We got finished, started the unit and watched the duct suck in and nearly flatten out. Talk about poor design by someone. We had to install angle iron bracing every so often to get the ductwork to handle the suction this thing produced. It was funny in an odd way, that is. Never a dull moment in HVACR work.

Two things I noticed. That band saw is awesome, just an old school method is that I used to use a Sawzall with a Bi- metal 24 teeth per inch and cut at an angle. Worked great, just need to file the end smooth afterwards. The second thing is that you struggled to get the bearing off. Trick I used was to use a 2 legged puller and set one end at the base and the other at the top of the housing. Sometimes with very hard to move bearings I had to use a large adjustable hose clamp, clamped around the puller near the bearing or it had a tendency of slipping off the uneven bearing housing surfaces. Big pain in the ass sometimes. The bearing comes off at at a squirly angle, but who cares, as it comes off easily and I never had help so I always looked for a way to help myself.

I can see why replacing them is so ideal (vs. repair), especially if parts have become less expensive. But hey, at least I learned something new!

Buy some huge industrial rubber bands for holding the Puller arms on those Sheaves big flat ones that go all around that 8.5 " sheave

we use the hose clamp kits that allow you to make your own size hose clamp. comes in 50' and 100' lengths with a dozen or so ends

Pullers drive me bananas. Grab a thin round bungee cord from the Cheapo Assortment Pack your wife gave you for Xmas and cut the hooks off. Pass the bungee through the unused holes in the puller jaws. Pass the free ends through an old grub screw ground lug and knot the ends. Now you have an adjustable circular spring that you can pre-tension and won't pull the jaws out of alignment.

First, Great job! Now I'd like to comment about 'edge' or sometimes we call it 'self-doubt', or apprehensive caution. I think whatever you call it, it's there to save you unanticipated 'PAIN'. I noticed you'd prepared for most of the challenges and that's the point. Your caution saved you time and reputation in such a critical situation. Just think about it; You got food cooked, guest in the dining room, staff set and ready, and you don't anticipate the correct path and it shuts your service down and the facility too, and probably a customer as well. Job well done. P.S. That saw! That saw! Milwaukee came thru.

protip in shaft keyways, the key taps in the saft and should slide freely in the pulley. you tap in the key then install the pully over it so you aren't beating the thrust out of the motor fighting the key in.

Man I have not had to do one of those in decades either but they are time consuming frustration no matter how you do it when it is 15 years of corrosion and buildup. My methods are almost exact with yours and I see no mistakes. Sandpaper and WD-40 are your best friend. Love that mini band saw I would use the crap out of that bad boy.

thank you for sharing your knowledge. they make a pulley that is called posilock little pricey but well worth the money. posilock locks the arm on the item you are pulling. i use one at work

So you’ve given me some good info her is my payback. I do this kinda shit all the time. What I mean I mainly do box car slash chiller repairs. Home Depot has a blade The Diablo Steel Demon. Carbine tipped. Put one of those on you sawzall. I’ve gone thru 2-11/16 shafts in less than 5 minutes it cuts like butter. We replace all sheaves and all So we just cut everything out and put it back together fast. Thx again for your videos. Learn lots. Hope that helps you guys. 👍🏼🇺🇸🥃

I was bidding on a compressor replacement on a York rooftop unit for one of the Radio Shack stores. They were strictly looking to go as cheap as possible. I went up and examined the thing. It had dual (2 stage) melon compressors, one on top the other. I found there was ample room to mount an upright compressor next to this assembly which cost a lot less than the direct replacement. My estimate won. I replaced the compressor with some new piping designs, bolted the compressor into the floor of the unit and tested it for proper op. I ten billed the company which was having financial problems. They were very slow paying. I told the customer I had a deal worked out with the bank...'they loaned money and I worked on equipment'. I doubt they had any credit left, though.

If you are using a puller and you don't have anyone to hold the arms in place... You can use a bungie cord strapped around the arms to hold them on the pulley while you apply torque to the puller bolt.

I follow your videos. I'm an ex-microwave radio tech and find your HVAC world interesting. Using Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence companion "Copilot, " I "research" definitions to your "HVAC terminology words". If I wasn't 80 years old, I think I would use your videos for beginning cross-training from Radio to HVAC.

As a mechanic and a ac tech i do suggest using anti seize on keyways and shafts anytime you are doing pulleys, bearings, or blower wheels it can be wipped off of the parts not under the wheels and all but they will go on easier and if you ever have 2 do any future work on that unit taking things apart will be alot easier as well. Also use it on the keys and in keyways you won't have near as much future issue 2 getting them out in future.

Love it, get the gear puller on there quick and sort it out. Wrecked bearings are a pain in the butt. I'm the same, check once, then again and then again before you get the zipcut out. It's easy to cock up when rushing about, but you go calm and careful.... you won't mess up. Having a buddy double check is a great way to build your trust and confidence. I had the same issue when dealing with waveguides, rf transmission medium in the GHz range (microwave), utterly mind bending how they work unless you know a guy who can explain it simple style. I had such a guy, we worked through a problem that had lots of people scratching heads, dodgy power supply was the culprit...... I learned so much from him. And learning a lot from you too, HVAC isn't as simple as I once thought, good. I like complex stuff

New shaft, new bearings, just cut those bearings off.. So much easier! Just for next time! When you get into BIG bearings, cutting them is much easier. Grinder and cutting wheel.

I agree with @Ozzy's comment below about going for the grinder and the cutting disk for the bearings and band saw or sawzall if needed. Chris, you exactly right about taking your time and triple checking your parts...............can't stress that enough. Once you start cutting it's too late to turn back.A lot of the younger guys don't understand that.

I would have recommended you replace the individual motor wires with a length of Armored Cable to avoid pinching during future maintenance work while you had everything apart. Or, if you don't want to/can't replace the wires with Armored, maybe go to Lowes (or you're preferred Store) and buy a 50 foot coil of 3/4 inch inside diameter PEX Plumbing pipe and use a length of that as a flexible protective sleeve for the wires - just slide a section on over the wires before you reconnect them to the motor and the pipe should be large enough that it won't get caught in the rails and wont overheat the wires...

Ductwork here in the DFW area of Texas is pretty much always jacked up. Like 14 ton unit with 2 14" flex duct returns to 20x20x1 filter grills jacked up.

Very nice job. I am surprised that the double blower wheels did not have dual belt drive sheaves on them. Could get a lot of slippage from one belt. Thanks for the video.

Your lucky to be on a roof with plenty of room - the last one I did was in a poorly engineered mechanical room - you could barely even walk around the unit - one side was against an outside concrete wall - so I wound up having to cut holes in two interior walls to be able to get enough room to change out the shaft - I use a torch to blow those bearings off - much faster.. I'm surprised that a fan that size only had a single belt.. - nice video - you must have some understanding customers replacing all the wheels bearings pulleys and shaft must have been spendy - along with the other repairs you must have at least 16 man hours in it plus freon and parts... course I guess that better than buying a new system... nice video - makes me glad I'm retired

I've done alot of these Lennox jobs and what he did is the way it should be done. There would have been alot more man hours on it trying to slide that shaft out of 2 blower wheels and bearings. He probably saved the customer money and saved alot of frustration for himself

Andrew F also, after all this it’s basically like a new one. The only thing that’s left from the existing blower assembly is the steel housing and unless it rusts away (which it clearly wasn’t doing) that doesn’t really suffer from being a couple decades old. The squirrel cages have those tiny welds on each blade and if even one of them fails things go wrong, so it makes sense to replace those as preventative maintenance.

As a non-HVAC guy... for the puller... you may want to try another way: use a big drill to make a small hole at the end, just enought so the tip of your puller get in. This will prevent it from wanting to walk away. Like a center hole for machining... Like center punch, 1/4" then switch to 1/2". The side of the drill bit don't have to get in... Heck probably direct with the 1/4 it would be enought!

As an FYI to make your life easier power tools and otc make a puller set that fits in the grooves of the pulley so it pulls from the center and you don't have to worry about bending a pulley. I think there is a brand called something like tru lock as well

A sawz-all is your best friend when you’re trying to get rid of a shaft. Don’t even need to bother taking the bearings off. Cut the shaft inside the housing, no need to take the frame apart and the blower wheels drop right out. Text about five minutes total for both of them

Knowing that you are going to replace the wheels, shift and bearings, you should have used a sawzaw to cut a 8" hole around the wheel hub. The bearings and shift could have slid through the hole in each wheel and you would have been done in 15 to 30 minutes. But I know you are showing how to remove just one bearing as well so... very informative.

Oh yeah, pro tip....easy way to sand the shaft of a good motor to put the new pulley on, turn it on and use sanding cloth to clean it up nicely.

@ 5:30 a small bungee cord helps hold your jaws tight if you do not have a second person.

Gearwrench brand pulley puller. They are worth the money. The one I use has index notches so you can set each jaw without having it flop all over the place. Made my job so much easier.

Regarding the pulley remover - Looks like there was no cap on your threaded rod. The cap allows the rod to rotate without dancing over the surface of the shaft.

I fully agree with the second guessing part. If you're just completely certain about something, you can easily just miss something, or gloss over something. Second guessing yourself means you double-check everything, and that helps to make sure you don't forget something. Especially when you're getting ready to do something that you can't take back, like when you cut that shaft. If you just go for it, you might've missed something, or missed a step, or something. So yea, having that little bit of doubt isn't just great to have, I'm willing to claim it's paramount to avoiding possibly simple mistakes.

I have and use a Pittsburgh hub and bearing puller kit. Has never failed me and works like a champ. I'm not a fan of those 3 arm pullers.

You left the belt a little tighter than I would which doesnt affect how it works but does wear out the belt faster. The tighter you have it the faster it wears out do to constant tension and the elements.

anti-seize compound on those shafts would have been nice. Especially on the motor shaft, since its likely that the drive sheave is going to eventually be replaced again.

A guy I work with use to do that until he read the instructions that come with sheaves which is usually in red and states that using anti seize will void any warranty

Andrew what that was mostly likely is a tapered bushing sheave, where you definitely do not want to put an anti-seize or lubricant on the tapered surfaces. Even on those it is perfectly acceptable to put anti-seize on the shaft.
