Their enterprise laptops have been at the top going back to when they were owned by IBM but recently their consumer offerings have also been very good. They even make really nice Chromebooks. .

I would say it’s decent value considering what you are getting, but it’s still expensive which doesn’t make it a steal

When the zen3+ 6000U series are coming? Anywho, Lenovo is the best as is one of the only manufacturer that lets you change the dedicated VRAM for the igpu in the bios (in less than 1000 price point).

Soldered memory should be illegal. These companies love to pontificate "green" while generating massive quantities of E-Waste.
@mzamroni
@mzamroni 2 года назад
As long as it's 16+ GB I think it's ok because soldered ram at least reduces manufacturing cost. It's soldered ssd that apple does should be illegal because write operation degrades it quite significantly
@andyH_England
@andyH_England 2 года назад
It is an ultrabook, you do not need more than 16GB. If you do get a prosumer or gaming device.
@arch1107
@arch1107 2 года назад
i believe this is true if the device has just 4gbs of ram soldered, owith 8 or more, it can be used for many years until it is time to recycle it
@loludied552
@loludied552 2 года назад
@@mzamroni correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t think soldered SSDs increase E-waste by any meaningful amount wearing out a typical SSD is quite difficult unless you are a content creator Let’s say you do your usual workflow and install a reasonably large game (40 gigabytes) everyday on your laptop’s SSD, it would take you at least a few years before you will notice SSD degradation. A typical Content creator wouldn’t heavily rely on a typical laptop SSD for that reason alone, but they will most likely use an external SSD designed to last for a very long time for their workflow.

The only thing letting this down is the design. It's just not premium like the HP Spectre or XPS 13. It looks very beige and ordinary, like it's doing it's best to look like a non distinct fridge. The battery will be below average with that OLED and small form factor, but there's no way around that.

Lon, you may want to get a usb c to ethernet adapter. Many times drivers will install during a Linux install and update when the distribution doesn't include them on the USB

Lon, thanks for the review. How was the reflectivity of this display. I'm finding that many of the PC vendors are using OLED screens now and AFAIK they are all glossy with no anti glare options. So fighting through the reflectivity in well lit areas can be a problem....so screen reflectivity is now becoming a serious buying consideration. Any chance that you could add a few comments about screen reflectivity to your review. Also do you know if it is possible for vendors to add anti-glare (matte finish) to OLED screens?
@LonSeidman
@LonSeidman 2 года назад
Sure I can mention that a bit - to be honest nearly all of the consumer laptops I review now are quite glossy - matte displays are becoming more and more of a rarity on consumer gear.
@jetmartin9501
@jetmartin9501 2 года назад
@@LonSeidman Thanks. Yeah unfortunately it does look like the trend is towards glossy especially as OLED is becoming more common place. I get the fact that glossy displays are "sexy" and "bright" and they show well but as you know they can limit where and how you use the laptop. I'll take a good bright matte display any day over a glossy/reflective display. I purchase laptops so that I can use them in a variety of places including well lit rooms and on my shady patio...but hey I'm a function over form type of guy. I wonder if there are any GOOD third party after market films/screens that can easily be added to (and removed from) laptop screens. If there are and viable options I'd be interested in seeing a review video that compared a few of these anti-glare laptop screen films to see if there is anything worthwhile out there in the market. (hint..hint...😉).

This laptop seems very similar in form to the Lenovo X1 Carbon Gen 10. Similar materials, weight, and dimensions. I noticed they also have a near identical underlying display panel - the 2880 x 1800 400-nit OLED Panel. The difference is that the X1 Carbon, being the business workhorse, has a non-touch panel with an anti-reflective coating, where this consumer level one is glossy with a touch for photos and movies and the wow factor. In my opinion, yes, the lower eye strain more multi-lit environment friendly anti-glare version is far better, but the X1 is multiples of this one's price and only currently has that damn heavy battery draining Intel 12-gen high core count CPU for some stupid reasons. It has much worse battery life as a result, but maybe they will add the 9W and 15 W U-Series processors eventually. (I had a 17" glossy 4K screen on a Dell Precision Workstation and remember always having to tilt the screen to avoid reflections from outside light coming through windows and lights on the ceiling).

So $1200 bucks for an ultrabook with no dGPU and an OLED screen. Most people would be better off picking up a 2021 Zephyrus G14 with Nvidia 3060 for 50 to 100 bucks more. Same goes for the Asus ROG 13.4 as another option. For a bit more you'd get the faster 5900HS processor and an Nvidia 3050Ti dGPU.
@andyH_England

Yes, but when all YT creators are having wet dreams over the Tab S8 Ultra that costs far more for a similar spec, you can see this as a bargain even though a different typr of device.

Zephyrus is heavy and thick compared to this. This also has a more business look - the Asus has tonnes of vents across the side. Very different machines for different audiences. A student or productivity user that doesn't game would much rather purchase this.
