Lenovo also has a terrible fan curve for the ideapad pro 5 lineup It is a well documented issue with fans ramping up at 35 °C . Lenovo has stated there will be no updates and no fixes. Also fan control is disabled by them It makes the awesome Idea pro 5 line to a useles laptop
If it has USB-C charging, it's not a big deal for less intensive tasks, as you can use a smaller USB-C charger for better portability. Again, it's not meant for more intensive tasks, but it's still an option for browsing the web and such.
Good point, I will try and include a shot of the charger in the next videos. It does have USB-C charging and it works even with a 65W variant, but of course you will loose quite a bit of performance.
@@NotebookcheckReviews on some Legion like the Legion Pro 5 AMD 7745HX + RTX4070 it is an enormous 300W power supply :-( but 300W cannot be small whenever it uses GaN technology, USB power input can be used but only to reload the battery and only if PC is turned off according to the manual, it's a shame because if you change settings to only use iGPU for the day, a much smaller USB-C delivered power would be enought.
@@NotebookcheckReviews Please hold the power bricks in your hand in the future so we can understand how big they are. Placing them without a comparison leaves a lot to guess... :) P.S- I understood not many laptops have that battery bypass when charging from a USB-C charger, so this means using such smaller charger will ruin battery longevity with use :\ Maybe it's better to deplete the battery, then let it charge and then use it. Not using while charging...
Thanks for your review. What’s your opinion on the 14th gen intel? Is it something to be concerned about? Regarding the noise, isn’t there a way of lowering it by using silent mode? I read somewhere that the performance on silent mode for 14th gen intels is actually pretty good
Real problem is the naming scheme. Is the Legion 5i and Slim 5i the same or is it different? Especially in the latest versions. Seems like a big problem with their lineups this year. Especially now that they have a Legion 9 and Pro series. Lenovo needs to stop what they're doing and fix that glaring problem first.
Well, afaik, they dropped the "slim" which actually cleans it up a little, dont you think? We now have the Legion 5/7, the Legion Pro 5/7, and the Legion 9 (with room for a Pro 9), right?!
would you say this a good laptop for computer programming/coding and light gaming? I am going into my first year of uni and looking for a laptop that can handle such tasks that is also good for commuting.
You need to change the way you do battery tests. Most people use the laptop during the day, and in the day they will use it at 250 nits at least. You should do tests at this level to get a more practical perspective on its battery. Even 200 nits is too low for daytime use, let alone 150.
In our written review we have results for the same test at maximum brightness, during video playback and under load: www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Legion-5i-16-G9-review-The-fast-gaming-laptop-with-Raptor-Lake-HX-and-an-AI-engine.798236.0.html
So that you guys have a point of reference, if it was just the fan noise, with nothing to compare it to, it does not mean much, but this way, you can compare it to the sound of the keyboard.
@@NotebookcheckReviews ohhhh....I figured as much but I wasn't sure...thank you...now I can't wait for the pro 5i review....and please let us know whether it's better to get that one over the 2023 model for those of us looking to by a new rig after so long
As long as its motherboard doesn't have a relatively high chance of failure. My Acer Nitro 5 from a few years back has had that be an issue and I am pretty sure this is what I ended up grabbing from Curry's PC (their website just has it listed as Lenovo Legion 5 and then main specs) here in the UK.
How does the legion slim 5 2023 fair against its competitors? Some say it has below 100w tgp but some have mentioned it can go well beyond 115w tgp.. can anybody clarify me on this? Thank you...
I use the micro sd card. As my mobile also has mico SD card slot it lets me transfer files between my laptop and mobile without occupying my mobile storage
any hints when the review for the legion 7 ( not pro - the one that replaces slim 7 from 2023 ) is coming? My laptop just died and I really need to buy smth soon , found the one with 14900hx and 4070 for about $2.1k and the price is not bad . however i don’t know if it can cool the 14900hx in a < 2 cm design … thanks !
Don't know where you're from, but we have it in Romania already so it should be in all of Europe. 2000 euros when promo campaigns apply, 2400 otherwise💰
Thank you like always for your insights good sir. Any news on AMD Variants for the legion series 2024? what about 40 Series variants on Mobile, maybe 4060 ti, 4070ti on laptops soon? Thanks!
@@antalpoti oh thanks, I assume you have some insider news ^^. If theres no new gpu variants in 2024, is it same to assume that the release of 50 series wont be released in 2025 anytime soon. Thanks
Great review. Thanks a lot for great start to 2024! ✌️ Does it come with two SSD slots? I recently purchased this laptop here in Germany from Lenovo's website, but despite 6-9 days of estimated delivery in the beginning, now it's been 12 days and they still won't deliver it probably for the next two weeks. I just hate this whole not Keeping promised dates thing. It's so unprofessional 🤦
Hey, I have purchased the same model and the temperatures are touching 97 deg C during cinebench r23 test and even while playing RDR2. Not constantly but in between. Is this normal?
use a book or something to elevate to back so that the air can leave out. I did this with my ideapad gaming 3 and the temps went dows for 90 to 70 degree celsius
I honestly don't like the design even though the absence of side vents is a plus, it feels like a step backwards because of the port placement and bulky design. Last year's slim 5 looked much better. Maybe they are experimenting, and this is just one of those oddities.
hey! I was looking for ward to buy this particular since I want a mobile gaming machine. I read online it support 1TB ssd. Is this per slot or does this laptop 1TB in total? Like can I upgarade it to 2Tb storage by installing 1Tb in each slot?
That is simply the max config you can buy it with. But it does have a second free NVME slot, and you can also upgrade the existing NVME slot if you so desire!
I really don't understand. Why put a microSD card reader instead of a full size one? If the laptop has a fullsize, it's almost nothing to use it with a microSD card, if on the other hand it is a microSD slot, you are CFed. Oh I like those temps! Well done Lenovo! What can I say, Lenovo is one of those rare cases who release laptops I wish I could buy. I agree about the RTX 4060 being the best bang for the buck this generation. Thanks for the video.
A lot of SD cards have a micro SD card in it, the large one is just to be able to use in cameras. At least the brands I tend to buy but I got a 1Tb micro SD card in my steam deck
can you guide me that which laptop is good value for like $800 I'm thinking to buy one I was thinking between victus, loq, and nitro which do you think is better or in general which brand between these 3 is preferable cause i have heard that Lenovo has poor cooling solutions, I honestly want some guidance on my new laptop please 😢
@@VAMPS000 Now I’m thinking about the 4060ver,but the cooling system, speakers and the performance need to be compare since two models spec are totally same and the price of pro5i is 400 more than 5i
What computer would you recommend for photo editing and something with 32gb plus ram and and 4070 up. Don’t want to spend an arm and a leg but something decent. Any suggestions with 2024 lineup. From Australia. 👍
Understably, for the next time, we have timestamps in most of our videos, so that should make it easier next time to jump straight to the performance section.
Honestly after owning Legion Slim 5 16" 2023 and LOQ 15 " 2024. I would say both laptop outvalue this Legion 5i 2024. The newer intel CPU doesn't really give enough efficiency improvement vs last year AMD or even Intel i9/i7. And with the pricetag of $1600-1800 this laptop would not sell much. Also the port placement and design choice is not an improvement over last year model. Even LOQ 2024 did better port placement, and i prefer the exhaust design on LOQ 2024 too. If only LOQ has 16:10 screen and QHD+ variant it would dominate the gaming laptop market in terms of value to performace and also thermal/cooling quality over other brand.
I agree with you on the whole IO situation; it is a weird layout. With how often Lenovo puts their stuff on sale, I am sure you can make some pretty good deals on this one, once the 2023 stock is gone.
Same with 2023. 2022 is where the Legion lineup peaked imo. The Legion 7/7i was literally one of the best gaming laptops I've ever used and definitely Lenovo's best laptop outside of much older ThinkPads. Then 2023 hit and they abandoned what worked and stripped everything for the subpar Legion 9i. I don't get it.
@@NotebookcheckReviews the I/O placement, lack of darker color - it looks cheap compared to last 2 generations which had it with matching keyboard. And idk if it’s the HX CPU to blame, but the 2022 variant even offered Thunderbolt 4/USB4 port!
So you can really speak for all laptop gamers out there? It is a great option in its price bracket, but I would be very careful calling something "the best" since it will mean something different for everyone.
I got the same one. Legion 5 with i9-14900HX 32GB RAM DDR5 and RTX 4060. Im worried the 4060 isnt enough. But the cpu is the fastest thing on the planet currentley. Im wondering how much the cpu helps the GPU. Especially with 32 GB'S of ram
I got this laptop model have to say one important detail this thing drain battery when plugged in in performance mode while gaming 6 hour net me like 10-15% battery left. It the power supply 230w is just not enough either then that performance is solid
@@NotebookcheckReviews 4070 i 9 variant brick was pulling 230watt battery get hot around 40-45c and drain but for certain game gta not affect but other game hoo it drain also when plugged in either balance or performance mode the keyboard get pretty hot.
sure..I used Vantage tool , and received comfortable keyboard temperatures just via modifying speed of coolers and decreasing temperature and voltage on CPU and GPU..so, coolers are working constantly 1800-2200rpm as minimal, with a bit noise and in this snenario it was fine to use it… balanced mode"auto, or gaming was not comfortable at all.
These 50-55 db gaming laptops are ridiculous. Someone may want to play at night in a silent room without waking others up! Why manufacturers don't invest more into making more silent laptops is beyond me.
Dude chill out a bit. Until and unless they are in the same room as you they arent gonna hear any type of fan noise. And companies do try to invest in this but it just doesnt work out as the laptops heat themselves too much cuz of the new and upcoming titles. If you do have a problem just go to another room and play or use quiet mode or just….sleep?
Get a liquid cooled laptop like the Legion 9 or XMG Neo 16 or something.... or build a PC with AIO.... unfortunately most laptops have to give fans in order to maintain CPU temps so the CPU doesn't overheat and die in a year or two.
